Pre-op diets?

Recommended Posts

Hi Ann....

My pre-op diet starts next Monday but I started a modified version today. One shake for Breakfast with a banana, two for lunch, an afternoon apple and a nice/ reasonable dinner.

Thanks for the shout out..........

Oh, sorry, John. Got the dates mixed up.

A banana is a great idea. I'll ask the surgeon about that. Thanks for the tip!

Hey Shaun, you're May 6th as well, correct?

John - I'm not sure about squash, I've thought about that but I thought for whatever reason it had to be green on the INside. I will ask on Thursday though because I love squash and your wife's cooking of it made me want some even more!

Ann - good thinking on the peas! I will look for those as well as the green Beans with the onions and peppers in them.

You are not alone!! I started yesterday evening and today was my first full day of nothing but Optifast shakes. Surprisingly it is doable but I am definately counting on that it will get easier after a few days!! Yesterday, I went for the pre-op appointments and everything is set in motion. I can't believe this is finally a reality! Hey TXAmy what doctor are you using? I am using Dr. Kim who is out of Coleyville. Well I have to go to bed now as I am really running out of steam! Good luck to everyone!

Amy, have you tried fresh spinach, what about asparagus can you have broccoli? I think cabbage counts as a green veggie and is really good sauteed with onions and a little olive oil. Hope this helps.

I have just been doing slim fast shakes and Protein bars and healthy dinner.

I found this web site that has tons of low carb recipes maybe there are some ideas on there.http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/salad_recipes.html

Ann, I know what you mean about going crazy with the eating prior to the pre-op diet- I've been so bad. Last chance for this, last chance for that... It's really silly. John, I also love the veggies on the grill - they're the best!

Yeah the "last supper" syndrome is hard to kick. Even though I've somewhat overcome that... my friends/family are now wanting me to have a last hurrah with them before the pre-op diet. It's kinda funny, actually. I'm already ready to let go of eating foods that are not great for my body but they're like "ONE MORE TIME!!!"

Dare I say it, Amy, what about Lima Beans? ? (yeah, that's what I thought)

My pre-op diet is only for one week. 80-100grams of Protein, no more than 50 carbs, I am allowed my coffee, and SF Jello and clear broth.< /p>

Ann, you were right about the Unjury, very good, the chicken broth was thick and tasted good.

Good luck everyone.

Lima Beans actually sound like a WELCOME CHANGE. I will ask them tomorrow when I go if that's ok. Asparagus is good, I have done that but not as much as green Beans and broccoli.

The past couple of days I've switched my dinner and "lunch" around and done a salad for lunch and oatmeal or toast for dinner. So that's been kind of nice, it's just eating the same thing and having no real choices that sucks.

I am on a high Protein, low carb, low fat diet now and I am supposed to have at least 1 Protein shake (20+ grams of protein) per day. I am drinking a Protein Shake at Breakfast & 1 at lunch, then light meal at dinner. I have a month from today left til surgery and I am going to have a few of my favorite meals in the next 2 weeks to get that out of my system. We had Thai food this evening.

My pre-op liquid diet starts 5 days before surgery and then changes to Clear liquids the day before.

I'm on a liquid diet for two weeks. It's 1000 calories, low-fat and sugar free. I can have Protein Drinks, non-caloric beverages, broths and low-fat creamed Soups. No chunks. I have to get at least 60 grams of Protein a day. I'm on day #2 and it's not too bad, except for having to cook real food for my family.

Danielle, which Protein drinks are you using? I'm just wondering which ones are low-fat and sugar free. So far, I've found Unjury, and I really like it. However, my doc wants me to do SlimFast for a week for some reason. It has much more sugar. I'm going to be going sugar-free after the surgery, so I'll switch to Unjury then.

Hey guys and gals... If you're looking for good Protein drinks, the one I recommend is Worldwide Protein Plus. They sell it online, in Vitamin stores, but best of all - at Trader Joe's!!! It comes in a soda-type can and man, it is delicious! I pretty much assume protein drinks/shakes/powders/supplements will taste like protein, but these taste soooooo good. 1 can has 35 grams of protein, 160-170 calories, 2 carbs, and 1 g fat. And you don't have to mix it, just grab and go.

I don't know about you all, but I'm going crazy prepping for this two week diet and then the post-op diet. My super-organized/OCD side is coming out, I even have a spreadsheet with all the info. I can't wait!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
