Pre-op diets?

Recommended Posts

So I'm halfway through day one of the pre-op diet and I feel good so far. Had a cup of juice, nonfat yogurt, and SF Jello for Breakfast. Forgot to eat my "snack" of Protein shake... I'll have that in a bit. Then lunch was a cup of Soup (mmmm V8 broccoli Soup - delish!), some applesauce, and more SF Jello. The jello helps for missing the chewing action. I didn't have my usual coffee w/nonfat milk & stevia this morning and was ok... might need to work that in but I hate Decaf coffee. I've been drinking Water and that seems to be keeping me full too. dinner will be more soup, some V8 juice, and more SF jello... maybe some pudding. It's amazing to me how much food I can eat for 1000 calories.

But then I wonder... am I being too optimistic on my first day? Or am I just SO ready to get this done that whatever I have to do - I'll do it. :)

TWO WEEKS TIL SURGERY!!!

I'm on day 3 of the pre-op diet and it does get easier. I did a modified version last week and so far this week all seems to be ok. I'm actually pretty full with the Protein drinks.

Who says we can't make the pre-op diet enjoyable. Also - YOU ARE READY TO GET THIS DONE......

I THINK WE ALL ARE

My first day on the preop!

I started my day with a cup of black coffee and splenda.

an hour later i drink 1 Optifast shake.

followed it with a water bottle. it has been about 4 hours and i am so full. i dont know how I will be able to drink another shake. i guess i have to force myself sometime soon.

my doc recommends to drink 5 a day along with Water and crystal light. So being the first day not too bad.

My approach is dont even think about it and do it!

good luck to everyone!

I will start my 10 day liquid diet Saturday and am VERY nervous about succeeding. I forgot to ask about putting Creamer in my coffee and sweet n low. Did anyone ask about these things? I have put vanilla soy milk in my coffee before and it was pretty good, I assume soy milk is ok for the liquid diet?

Hi Cyndi:

Don't worry, you can do it! Just remember what you're doing it for - a successful surgery and a tool that will get you to a healthy weight!

I'm on day 2, and I recommend preparing ahead of time, and getting as much of a variety as possible - it sure helps the monotony of liquids. I had coffee this morning and put my usual nonfat milk into it, which was ok by my surgeon. It cuts the bitterness of the coffee, it's dairy (yay calcium) and it actually is pretty tasty.

Also, one of my skinny friends (I mean SKINNY, and naturally of course), turned me on to a sweetener that is all-natural and ZERO calories, called Stevia. You can get it at Trader Joe's or Whole Foods or probably any health-food store. I put it in my coffee instead of Extra/SweetNLow/Splenda, and to my surprise - I used less and it was still sweet!! Yum!

Of course, the answer to any question you have about your pre-op diet should be answered by your surgeon's office since every surgeon has their own preferences for their patients. Whatever you do, good luck!!

Hello, fellow pre-oppers! I started my diet today (though technically I could have started tomorrow) and so far, so good. Of course, I get an invitation to a surprise party at an Irish pub for Friday night, and I think I'm going to have to say no because it will be way too hard to just sit there drinking Water. I haven't told any of the people who would be there, and it would just be too uncomfortable. *sigh*

BUT! It's all going to be worth it in a few months!

Hi all! I'm 1/2 way through my first day on the pre-op liquid diet. Two slim fast shakes, 32 ounces of Water, 2 cups of chicken broth and 1 SF Jello cup and I'm surviving but not feeling great. I think this is going to be a mental challenge for me. I'm so ready, but I just really *HATE* to feel hungry. Maybe I was starved in a past life or something - ha ha ha...I dunno. I'm just worried that 3 can's of slim fast with only 10 grams of protien per can is not going to hold me. I love reading everyones posts - it's helping! Thank you!

Jennifer, I am on my first day of SlimFast pre-op also, but I'm lucky (?) to get 6 cans a day. I had two for lunch. Now I'm starving. My dh wants to cook a big meal tonight because technically I didn't have to start preop until tomorrow. Ugh... what to do, what to do?

BTW, I saw you got your insurance approval in 4 hours! I got mine in just one hour. I was told it would take up to a month! I think they must have looked at ours and thought we really needed it, huh? LOL

I had my pre-op nutritionist appointment today. I've been instructed to start my pre-op diet 7 days before surgery (which means I start the diet on May 7th). High Protein, low carb diet - lots of meats and vegetables. No Protein Shakes til after surgery. Dr. K thinks his patients will get tired of them too quickly.

After spending an hour on the phone with the nutritionist I am so psyched and ready for this surgery! Of course, I'm still a little nervous, but I really feel my confidence building. Next Monday is my pre-op consultation with Dr. K. My plane leaves for Denver May 13th. Woo Hoo!!

Hi Everyone,

I've been testing out the different protiens too. I mixed the unjury with SF pudding and it was great couldn't even taste it. I also really like the Designer whey brand, good taste to it. I ordered some samples of the Syntax nectar line and it's great. For the soft stage I also found some thick Soups that taste great by "Just Right". They have potato leek, split pea and black bean just add Water to the carton perfec to take to work with you. I've lost 12lbs so far on my preop diet and looking forward to next week, already counting down the hours.

Hope everyone else is doing well!!!

Wow, everyone is doing so well! Sbush, you have given me inspiration! 12 lbs in 8 days is awesome!

I got home last night and my dh had made a "last meal" for me -- steak, broccoli, mashed potatoes, and chocolate cream pie. :) I really wasn't expecting all that! But, he was being very kind, so of course, I ate it, seeing as today was technically my official start date for the preop diet. So, here I go, nothing but SlimFast and Water today!!

WE CAN DO THIS! YES WE CAN!!!

My doc won't let us have cafeine. Does anyone else have that rule? I have cut out cafeine, carbonated drinks, & gum as per his request. Also, no alcohol for at least 6 months. What about y'all?

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
