Pre-op diets?

Recommended Posts

My doctor didn't require me to do a pre-op diet he just said liquids the day before. I'm 10 days away and nervous as a cat in a room full of rockin chairs but I'm excited at the same time. My demons keep telling me this isn't gonna work and that something will happen and I'll have to have it removed.

I've asked on post op forums and I think this is normal the closer you get to your date but it can sure mess with your head. :)

Good luck everyone I know we can do this!!!:w00t:

OK seriously, "nervous as a cat in a room full of rockers" is something I have never heard and it is probably going to be the cutest thing I have heard in a while. That is CA-YUTE and I plan on using it as soon as I can! :)

Also I was thinking wow, 10 days away - that is close! Then I realized you are only 2 days before me and that was even more scary.

It's normal though, and that's why we have each other - our fellow BANDitos to lean on for support!

Thanks for the tip, Kellster! I will have to stop at Trader Joes!

And Deb, thanks for the funny saying -- I'm stealing it also. Don't worry, I'm also as nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs! :) Hang in there!!

Hey Ann, Slim Fast has a low carb, high Protein Shake that is actually REALLY good. I LOVE the Unjury, you had mentioned it a while back and I tried it, wonderful. Good luck to all that are already on the pre-op diets, it great to read your daily doings, it makes me now know that I can and will get through it. AND good luck to all of us who are about to start our pre-op diets, mine starts this coming Friday.

So I got the pre-op paperwork and my "official liquid diet" info. The doctor likes the two week diet to shrink the liver, and most people lose 10-15 lbs, which doesn't suck. Here's the scoop!

Full liquid diet (1000 calories and minimum 70 grams protein) every day starting 2 weeks before surgery

Full liquids include:

Skim milk, Lactaid milk, or soy milk

Low fat cream Soup

Any fruit juice without pulp

Any vegetable juice

sugar free pudding

Light yogurt

No sugar-added fudgesicle

Protein supplement (they recommend World Wide Pure Protein)

Liquids that you can consume in any amounts:

Water

Crystal Light

Diet Snapple

Tea

coffee - preferably Decaf

sugar free Jello

Sugar free popsicle

broth, low-sodium (beef, chicken or veggie)

I have some delicious Soups already, and broth, and the Protein shakes. Yay can't wait!

Started my 14 day liquid diet today. Have been doing a modified program over the last week ( a Protein drink for Breakfast and two for lunch with fruit, then a nice dinner) so hopefully this shouldn't be too bad..........

Once you are on the " liquid diet" the whole process becomes real..........

GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE mayo BANDITOS !

Hi all! Yes, Trish - I feel the same way but I look at this surgery as being less dangerous than gal bladder surgery. Have you ever heard of anyone dying during or after a gal bladder surgery? I haven't (and no I refuse to google it!) This is from my surgeon - he said he never has a lap band paitent complain about pain after surgery but he get it all time time after gal bladder surgery. This rationale may be silly, but it make me feel better and I hope it will make you feel a little better too!!

So I had pre-surgery teaching this AM and I received my liquid diet instructions. I begin Wednesday (Apr. 29th)

3 Cans of Slim-Fast OR Optifast 800 per day (one at each meal).

Drink a minimum of 48 ounces of Water.

May also have Clear Liquids such as chicken broth or beef broth, sugar free Jello, sugar free popsicles, sugar free tea and Crystal light. coffee must be Decaf. Tea and coffee must be black, I can use artificial sweetner.

That's it! I feel like I'm going to starve but I am SO doing it - I'm ready to go! I'm very excited but I feel like I'm going to be visiting here often to get some moral support from people who are also going through the same thing.

Speaking of needing moral support - get this- my co-worker today (as I'm in the midst of having a low-blood sugar moment - I'm not diabetic - just get shaky and very hungry if I don't eat at regular times) that lap band is not going to work for me because "I'm TOO EMOTIONAL?" What? What does me having low-blood sugar have to do with emotions? She has hypoglycemia - recently diagnosed - how can she tell me this was because of my emotions? It's upsetting but I'm tuning her out. Just had to vent. Thanks! :-)

Trish

I have had the same thought too. It makes me feel selfish to take the risk, but honestly, I trust my Dr and his team. (and I have life insurance which is all I can do for them if I did go) I think these thoughts are normal. Besides, we are way more likely to go in a car accident running errands than from such a noninvasive surgery. Im pretty sure we are going to be just fine!

I started my pre-op diet yesterday and let me tell you...I wanted to give up SO many times  I was so hungry I could have chewed my arm off! Today I have a headache. Probably withdrawals from caffeine/sugar? Anyhow, I am on the following diet plan:

shake for Breakfast (premier performance Protein shake - 30g protein/1g sugar/160 calories)

Shake for lunch (premier performance Protein Shake - 30g protein/1g sugar/160 calories)

Lean Cuisine for dinner

I can also have up to 4 lbs of green veggies (that's a lot!) and sugar free popsicles.

I made it through the first day and am feeling better about things today. Since I am not supposed to use Creamer in my coffee, I tried adding some of my Protein Shake from breakfast to it. It wasn't horrible

How's it going for everyone else?

So I'm halfway through day one of the pre-op diet and I feel good so far. Had a cup of juice, nonfat yogurt, and SF Jello for breakfast. Forgot to eat my "snack" of Protein shake... I'll have that in a bit. Then lunch was a cup of Soup (mmmm V8 broccoli soup - delish!), some applesauce, and more SF Jello. The jello helps for missing the chewing action. I didn't have my usual coffee w/nonfat milk & stevia this morning and was ok... might need to work that in but I hate Decaf coffee. I've been drinking Water and that seems to be keeping me full too. dinner will be more soup, some V8 juice, and more SF jello... maybe some pudding. It's amazing to me how much food I can eat for 1000 calories.

But then I wonder... am I being too optimistic on my first day? Or am I just SO ready to get this done that whatever I have to do - I'll do it.

TWO WEEKS TIL SURGERY!!!

I will start my 10 day liquid diet Saturday and am VERY nervous about succeeding. I forgot to ask about putting creamer in my coffee and sweet n low. Did anyone ask about these things? I have put vanilla soy milk in my coffee before and it was pretty good, I assume soy milk is ok for the liquid diet?

Question - Can you really have 4lbs of veggies?? did you mean 4 cups of veggies??

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
