Hey all. Day 2 Post-op. Thought it was time for an update. Surgery was 9 AM on Thursday, 7/14. During surgery, the doc repaired a Hiatal (sp?) hernia. I am thinking that's where most of my pain is coming from. That night I had an issue taking medicine and it got me coughing non-stop for an hour or so. Was not good. The nurse had me take some warm broth. It helped. I still have the cough, but not as consistent. Kind of a tickle at the bottom of my throat that I can't get rid of.

I was discharged yesterday afternoon after the surgeon came in and saw me. Overall a good/great experience and I would recommend Dr. French and the Crescent City Surgical Centre for their nurses, facilities and staff.

The day of surgery I weighed myself at 289. Out of curiosity, I weighed myself last night at 296 or something. I attribute that to all the fluids they pumped into me. Plus all the broths I drank had a ton of salt in them. No worries on this. Just thought I'd add for the update.

I have some rough reflux/heartburn and some gas pain issues that I'm dealing with. Overall not too bad I guess, and about what I expected. At least I don't feel like I'm dying. :D A few times I took too much Water or broth in and found it is very very uncomfortable. This is something I will need to continue to work on. Oh, and before I forget, Norco helps for pain.

I'm on a clear liquid diet for days 1-6. I'm already tired of beef/chicken broths. This morning I had a Protein powder/water shake and now sipping a black coffee. Both were on the dietician's planner/menu thing.

My plan today is mostly rest and recouperation, but I will get up and walk a little. I will contine working on figuring out how much is too much when sipping water or broth or whatever. But...typos

No regrets.

Glad you are doing well Kevin! I weighed myself when I got home and was also up. I went in at 254 and was 258 when I got home. I attributed this to general swelling and inflammation and fluids.

Day 4 Post Op: surgery was 7/12 and I was on ice chips only until the following day when I had imaging to check for leaks. Since there were no leaks I progressed to full liquid diet. I stayed one more night and was released home on 7/14. Pain is decreasing significantly each day. I've been taking my Norco before going to bed and every so often during the day if sore. My incisions inch like crazy, which is good because it means they're healing. I did have a 100 degree fever the night I came home, but it hasn't increased and I've been monitoring it just in case. Beside the expected discomfort from the incisions, it is really a rather uneventful recovery. The only challenge so far is sleeping since I cannot use my cpap for two weeks post-op and I've been snoring like a lumber jack! But hopefully that, too, will be a thing of the past.

I hope everyone else is recovering nicely!

Glad your recovery is going so well. I guess I don't understand why they don't want you using the CPAP. I know all doctor's have different schedules and plans. I was told to bring mine to the hospital when I went in for surgery. I 've had mine for 3-4 years and don't know if I could sleep without it.

Hi Kevin! My understanding is that the CPAP can put pressure on the stomach from swallowing air, but I could be wrong. I know I'm also not allowed to use straws. All I know is, as much as I hate having to use the CPAP, I can't wait to be able to use it again for a good night sleep!

I have a love/hate relationship with my CPAP/BiPAP as well, so I know that feeling. Hopefully they'll allow you to start using it sooner rather than later, otherwise, I would probably ask at some point. Hey, I used mine the first two nights after my sleeve and it didn't kill me LOL. I had a nice burp when I got the mask off this morning which has been the norm this past couple months. I probably need a new sleep study, as mine seems to pump a lot of air into me, but will hold off and maybe do it after I get closer to my GW of 190.

Hi Kevin, I’m so happy things are going well for you. I think I’m starting to turn a corner. My surgery was 7/12. I also had a hiatal hernia repair. I agree the hiatal hernia repair is where most of the pain is coming from, my doc said that he kinda tightened up the opening of the esophagus to match the size of the new tummy so that is also why it’s probably a little harder to drink/eat too much.

I ended up having to go in and get IV Fluids yesterday because I was unable to take in more that 10 Oz a day. I discovered today (like you) that if I took my pain meds regularly, I had less problems. I already took in 8 Oz of water in my first half hour of being awake. The IV gave me energy so I think I’ll bet back to walking outside. I’m so hopeful that things are on the mend. Now to figure out how to get at least 60 grams of Protein in.

@KevinS62 @HealthierMe2022 @MsGina thanks for the updates! Glad everyone seems to be on the mend and it’s nice to have this thread to go through this together.

Day 3 post op for me today, first day of full liquids so I am going to start with a Protein Shake. But I’m a bit scared! No idea why because I’ve been able to swallow just fine and take a full size Tylenol without any trouble.

still a little pain at the top of a deep breath in but it’s better than yesterday and better again than the day before.

sleeping propped up is more comfortable but it gives me a headache. Tylenol has thankfully helped with the headache. I’m coming off the tramadol today/tomorrow if all continues to go well.

my JP tube is the most annoying thing and I’m very eager to get it out. Like now would be nice but i think that’s going to be Wednesday when I have my follow up.

Hello Everyone,

New to posting looking for some support. My surgery is July 21st. On day 8 of pre op full liquid diet. I was just wondering after reading through so many comments and replies I wanted some help and understanding about how I’m feeling today. Well day 8 pre op 11lbs down, I feel absolutely terrible, I wake up full blown headache, bad taste in my mouth, and stomach so nauseous. Its hard for me to just get it together. I feel so terrible. I thought I was supposed to be feeling great by now and used to it but I am definitely not. Harder and harder to sip Protein, and taking me eternity to finish one bottle of core power 42g. My stomach feel so gross. Please help me get thru this.. is this normal?

Good news, your probably going into ketosis, which burns fat. Bad news, feeling like you have the flu is typical at that stage. Keep up your Water and protein! It should go away in a day or 2.

I’m sorry you’re not feeling great! Probably a good idea to speak to your team as soon as possible, maybe you can change something up in the diet that would help? I didn’t do pre-op liquid diet at all, just after 6pm the night before surgery, but I’m 4 days post op liquid, good for you getting through 8 days so far! Hopefully it is just ketosis and you don’t have a virus. If you’re feeling how you explained above on the day of surgery they may not want to operate on you. Hope you are feeling better soon! Cay

Day 12 of Pre Op - liquid diet (water, Protein Shakes or can replace one shake with a Protein bar). Basically I am having 1,000 calories a day and I am drinking over 100 oz of Water every day. I do not feel hungry but I pee a lot. I lost about 5 lbs in the first couple of days and that's it. The scale has not moved in 7 days. In fact, this morning, I was up 0.5 lbs. This is making me nervous. What is going on? Is the scale not going to move once I have the surgery? I keep telling myself to trust the process but this doubt is weighing heavy on me.

Keep telling yourself! I know it’s the hardest thing but if you can stay off the scale it might help. I find it so hard not to be jumping on every 5 minutes but when I stay off for a week I am so much more healthy mentally!

I lost 4lb on pre-op diet but I was not full liquids - mine was low carb diet, only stopped eating actual food at 6pm day prior to surgery. My surgeon sent me home with a photo of my healthy liver (kinda weird seeing your own insides) so I guess I did something right. I don’t know how much I’ve lost since but I’ll hop on the scale tomorrow as I have a post op appointment.

When is your surgery? Three days’ time? Best of luck with it!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
