Just had my two week post-op appointment. Doctor is very happy with everything. I've now been cleared for soft foods - yaaaaaaayyy! I thought I'd be on soft foods for 1-2 months, but doctor said do it for 2 weeks then I can move on to the final rest-of-my-life stage. Very happy with how things are going.

Ohh so exciting! I cannot wait to start purées on Tuesday. Let us know how soft foods go!

Hi everyone! So today I went to my 1 month post op doctor's visit. My labs were impressive - thank goodness, as I was worried. I have lost 32 pounds since surgery 6/8/22. I did not lose any weight pre op, in fact I gained as I enjoyed a "last hurrah" eat fest. I was cleared for all gym workouts! Yaaaay! Also, no more Protein Shakes as I now need to eat food rich in Protein. I am also on a regular high protein low carbs diet - 3 meals daily. I am honestly worried about this as my taste buds have changed, I'm never hungry, and even when I try to eat, I get full after 2 or 3 bits. This surgery has completely changed my relationship with food. There are times when I think of enjoying a large bowl of Pasta and chicken parmesan and feel sad, but that feeling is short lived when I look in the mirror or get on the scale and can say, the sacrifice was worth it. We can all do this!

I was literally scared to eat my first meal. Just a cup of egg beaters with a little spaghetti sauce and parm (I'm a vegetarian). Ate very slowly, took me an hour to finish. But no issues at all and so happy to have real food and do some chewing!

Yay! I had my 2-week post op today too. Doctor and Nutritionist were both happy with my progress (30 lbs down including pre-op) and moved me to soft foods for two weeks. :)

I had felt the same way about food my entire life until about 10 years ago. When the weight started coming in, I said screw it and I started eating. Now since surgery, same date as you, I can take food or leave it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I have also lost 32 lbs,, and I’m cleared to run. I have found that staying hydrated is the most important thing I can do. Since I have no appetite, the few bites I have per day and high quality protein. CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN! 🎉🎉🎉

The transition to soft foods today hasn't been as much fun as I expected. I've had Breakfast and lunch, total 400 calories, plus 44 ounces of Water and I'm full!!! I guess real food is a little more filling than purees. I rarely felt full during purees. But I did really enjoy the egg beaters and refried Beans I've had today. Maybe tofu for dinner if I can handle it.

That’s awesome! How exciting to get back to regular food! Are you supposed to eat a certain amount of food or just until you aren’t hungry anymore?

My doctor keeps her patients on a medicine cup size of food once a day for a month, then you can eat a medicine cup size portion 2-3 times a day for the second month. After that, I believe we can have a 1/2 cup portions. This is to allow the new stomach to heal. Just soft foods the first 2 months.

I can’t wait until I reach your stage with real food again! Please let us know how it goes! 😊

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
