August Sleevers-How are you doing??

Recommended Posts

Allie589 I’m in the same boat. Down 120 lbs and haven’t bought anything new except a shirt I needed for school (I’m a teacher) and I still bought a 3x. It’s all I know. I’m afraid of having to buy clothes because it’s always been a not fun experience. Trying to get my head around this but I still have a ways to go

Wow! What an incredible weight loss! Congrats! We shld go shopping together! You by chance live in the Bay Area?? I prefer to go totally solo on a weekday evening and just try on. I’ve had luck at Macy’s and Kohl’s. Where I am having my major struggle now is with short sleeved shirts. About to head it to Arizona for spring break and it’s 90 degrees!! I finally wrapped my head around fall/winter clothes (actually fit into tall boots! They zipped over my calves!) but the warm weather clothing is giving me major, major anxiety. We can do this!! I’m there with you in spirit! Go get some new clothes!!!

LaLaDee it bizarre to explain but I’m afraid to. All I know is 4x or 26/28

anything else is foreign to me. I’m working on it though... may try one or two new things for summer!

It is bizarre to explain! I stupidly said something to one of my gym friends about how I am struggling with shopping since my weight loss and she turned to my other friend and said, “I wish I had that problem!” and laughed. I felt so discounted. It is so real though. I can’t wrap my head around all of this, and it is really hard to put into words that actually make sense.

I hit my personal goal this past Saturday. Surgery was 8/11 and my goal was a 25 Bmi. I've lost 58 lbs total and can fit into size 4/6. But I'm bummed that my cholesterol is still high and my A1C is still in the pre-diabetes diabetes range.

Still working at it to see where my body settles. And trying to get rid of the belly flap.

Congratulations!! I’m around the same place you are — I hit my doctor goal/BMI of 25 last week. I’m so excited about this! Sleeved in May, have lost 96 lbs, and feel amazing. Went shopping and bought some size 8 dresses yesterday, which blows my mind.

I'm wearing a new shirt today... it's a medium. Long road between XXXL and M, y'all.

The relationship between size and weight is something I didn't really understand. I thought I would get down to about 175 before looking trim and that would would maybe be an XL. I'm down to 198 and nothing I wear anymore is bigger than an L and some of it is medium now. Some of that is probably the way sizes have changed over the years to flatter people. An M today is probably an L from 20 years ago. But still. It's weird.

The other weird thing is, I went from looking very much like my youngest brother (who is overweight but not obese) and not at all like my older brother (who runs marathons) to nothing at all like the younger brother and very much like the older one. We're not twins or anything but we have a strong family resemblance now.

198! Did your wife quit smoking? Wasn’t that the deal?

I have the opposite problem. I can’t quit shopping! I joke that is my addiction transfer. Last weekend I exchanged some shirts I had bought from Large to Medium.

And yes, the weight and size correlation is weird. I remember being this weight but definitely not this size. I think excess skin weighs a lot more than I thought. And I have more muscle from working out.

If you are afraid to go shop, just do it! Go with no wallet and just try some things on. It will put a smile on your face and encourage you - I promise!

It was! Thanks for remembering! Yep, she's working with a cessation counselor through our insurance company. She's down to 4 cigarettes a day (from 10-12) with a projected quit date of June 1. I'm pretty proud of her.

Ahhh. That’s awesome! Cheers to the healthier couple!

It’s so inspiring, how well all of our brother and sister sleevers are doing! Yay us!! I am on spring break in Arizona with my whole family (siblings and all their kids, including my insanely fit sister in law) and for the first time in YEARS, I put a swim suit on. My kids are so excited. It’s hard still but I am pushing through and am trying to really enjoy myself. :) I want to be in my kids’ memories of being interactive and not just sitting and watching.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
