Can't drink Protein, HELP!

Recommended Posts

I am 6 days post-op and I am struggling BIG TIME. My doc wants me getting 60g of Protein every day and a total of 64oz of liquid every day. I've slowly been better with Water, Gatorade, but still no where near the 64oz. My main concern though is Protein. Any type of Protein Drink I can't keep down (i throw it up). I've tried different kinds of premade shakes, Isopure ready to drink, protein Water. One sip of any of those and I feel SO sick. The only thing I've found that I keep down that contains protein is a small amount of skim milk or kefir.

What can i do?!?!

Milk, milk, milk... and broth. (Look for broths that have Protein or make your own).

My only concern with the milk is there's a decent amount of sugar naturally in it. I also read somewhere that too much dairy hinders the healing of the stomach. But right now, it's looking like I don't have a choice. I have tried broth on 2 occasions, I did keep it down but it's not my cup of tea. I'm not a big Soup person to begin with and I found the taste kinda gross to be honest!

I ordered some New Whey Protein Shots. It has 42g of Protein in it. Couldn't tell you how it tastes cause my surgery isn't till the 3rd. But I read from a lot of people it works great. You can get it next day on Amazon.

Before surgery I was a huge fan of Premier, but ever since surgery one sip of them and it comes right back up!

I'm only six days post op...but my experience is that putting Unjury into broth is decent, and the Premier is o.k. if it sip sip sip only 4 ounces at a time. Hope this helps.

I'm 3 days post op and have not been able to get in enough Protein. Today I tried a cold Premier Protein but my stomach started to hurt then I warmed it up and was able to drink it like a hot chocolate

Bone Broth has more Protein then just broth. I really don't like eating meat, I am just to get the protein, but I would prefer not too. I usually drink a Premier Protein drink a day to help, but they taste terrible, too sweet. I like my GENEPRO 30grm Protein Powder, I prefer drinking protein Water but it's expensive. I wish someone would make it in a protein water powder, I dislike Protein Shakes.

Good luck, it does get better.

Protein post op.

It is a rare person who can get all 60-80g of protein 1-5 days post op.

I would say concentrate really hard on staying hydrated first and foremost. Your tummy is swollen and healing. Holding too much of anything down will bring it right back up. The few days after surgery I was sipping Water an ounce every 15 minutes with a sporadic ounce or two of Protein Shake. I premeasured 2 ounce container with protein shake. I started with Premier Protein shakes but switched to muscle milk (the one with 40g protein) because it is a bit thinner. I am now back to premier because I think it tastes better.

Most of all, don't beat yourself up about not getting enough right now. Not everybody can at first but always keep trying. By 2 weeks out I could finally drink 3-4 ounces of shake at a time. Now at 6 weeks out I can drink a whole shake in about 30 minutes. Concentrate on staying hydrated and healing.

Be easy on yourself and your new, sensitive, healing tummy. Pretty soon it will become your most valuable tool to life long health. Enjoy the experience!!!

Take care

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
