Things I didn't expect my first month post-op

Recommended Posts

My book from my doctor says no caffeine @@Radar so get mentally prepared for that. That's hard for me too, because I'm an avid coffee drinker. I have a Keurig at my desk for pete's sake lol!

1) I didn't expect to have bad dumping syndrome with anything dairy or anything with sugar in it like Soy milk etc - ruled out all my planned ways of getting Protein in in the early days.

2) Didn't realize the gas pains would be so bad and take a week to go away.

3) that by week 3 i felt 100% better and well and energized

4) despite the dumping i have a sleeve of steal I can handle chicken already (with my NUTs and surgeons blessing)

5) that i totally went of plain cold Water and now drink mostly fruit teas and warm light blackcurrant flavored water.

I am 1 week out also.

I have severe pain & nausea when I drink plain Water. I can drink anything else fine. So getting enough fluids has been so hard.

I totally understand the "sip, sip, sip" not working I want a huge drink to quench my thirst.

I could not take my antibotics crushed, it made me throw up. Finally called my regular doctor and she prescribed me some liquid. Much better!

Ok I have another one...I'm suprised that at officially one week out, I'm still experiencing pain in my main incision from which my stomach and hernia were removed. It's at a level 8! I called my doctor and they just advised me to call the office tomorrow morning to see about getting a refill on my pain meds. I don't think it's infected or anything, but I know I made a couple wrong turns and may have pulled on it too much. I'm hoping it subsides in the next coming days, but it's pretty bad.

How long did it take for you guys' pain to completely go away and go no longer need pain meds?

I didn't expect the weird noises that would constantly come from my throat and chest from anything I ate or drank. I guess they're just air bubbles, but it can be so embarrassing when they happen in a quiet classroom.. People say if I could make myself burp it might help, but I can't figure it out!

I was off pain meds after a week. But the pain near my bellybutton (the strange pulling feeling) didn't go away for another week or so after that. I missed sleeping on my stomach beyond anything else and pushed myself a bit just to be able to do it when I was still pretty sore

Having researched weight loss surgery for years, reading forums, and going through six months of weekly classes as a pre op, I felt well prepared for every contingency.

Yet I'm still shocked, on a daily basis, at just how little I'm able to eat. And even more so at the fact that that little amount of food more than satisfies my hunger. It's wonderful!

Another thing I didn't really expect: I think I'm growing a baby lion/bear in my stomach. The roaring and growling...

I didn't expect my extreme hunger (I've always had ridiculously bad hunger pangs) to return after 30 days. I've been following the program with few exceptions, have not been drinking coffee or soda at all, but my churning stomach and acid feeling is back. I can drinking Water (don't have to sip sip sip) and worry that maybe I stretched my stomach out by not sipping instead. My stomach just hasn't had that "full" feeling since about two weeks after the surgery. I just ate Breakfast an hour ago and I'm already super hungry. This is my worst nightmare post-surgery -- well, not my worst. I had a very easy surgery and recovery and I'm grateful for that. I just really thought and hoped I would not be hungry like this again, especially not so soon. :-(

I am 5 weeks post op and I still forget to eat! If I realize that I haven't eaten I just grab a Protein shake!

I never get that hungry feeling but if I wait to long between or I am not drinking enough I get an empty feeling! It is so weird!

How one week love a food but next week it makes me sick.... I would find something that works great but by the following week it has changed. My taste bud changes all the time. So now buy just enough for a week.

Not pooping for nearly a week freaked me out, but it all came out all right in the end. ;-)

I was surprised I gained weight in the hospital, but it was all the IV fluids they gave me. I prepared my family and staff for me to be irritable for the first few weeks, but once I discovered clear Isopure Protein drinks, I was able to keep my Protein up and that made mood ok.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
