So yesterday as I was driving home it hit me. Although I am beyond thrilled, excited nervous scared and feeling a million other emotions...the slightest apprehension has been gnawing at me and I didn't even realize what it was..truthfully just thinking that it was nerves. As I pulled into my driveway the tears came pouring down my face....all this time...all these years...this overwhelming feeling I've been caring with me. SELFISHNESS. It hit me that deep down I felt guilty like I was being selfish during such a chaotic time in my life to even consider doing something so big so important for myself. Weight loss surgery.

As a very busy full time executive, mother to 3 amazing kids (my youngest is 10 months), full time caregiver to my mother who has Heath issues...who in the world am I to even consider such a thing during such a crazy time. I declared in my car....now is the BEST time for me to take care of me and i am doing this for me and my kids. We all have to take care of ourselves so we can continue to be the 'rock' that so many of us are to our families and friends.

I might add that my family is 100% supportive... This feeling I have is absolutely my doing but I feel so happy that I am able to recognize it. Why have I never considered wls all these years?!?!

I am so excited to be on this journey with all of you. I love reading everyone's story. I hope this helps inspire just one person who may still be on the fence about taking control of their life again. I am tired of being 'the girl with the pretty face '. I am SO much more than that...and SO much more than a number on a scale. Thank you for listening. :-).

New to this site and am so happy to find this refreshing venue for positive discussion . I had initial consult with surgeon last Friday. Upper endoscopy and NUT consult on Thursday. Completed 4 surveys for Psych to day with his appt next Tuesday. Blood work day after tomorrow so I am hopeful all will be submitted to insurance by end of next week. Was told to expect about 2 week wait for approval from Anthem BCBS. I am so hoping for a December date.

I need a hip replacement badly but need to lose some weight before Ortho will perform surgery. Just an added dimension of stress but am enormously happy to have this journey started.

Thanks for all of the encouragement! I am having surgery in Greensboro , NC with Dr Layton

Lioness813, there is almost never the "right" time to do anything! However getting yourself healthy should always be something that is done as soon as possible. Most of us probably waited far too long already!

I'm sure most of us go through the most random thoughts leading up to this thing!

I'm not afraid but I do have a healthy fear of any procedure as things happen! It took me a long time to find the love of my life and the only thing pinging in the back of my head every now and then is not making it through the surgery and leaving him. However, as the psyc who did my eval pointed out, I don't have health issues that are typical for complications. I believe fully in my surgeon (1 leak 5 years ago and no deaths). So we just talk and plan about how amazing things will be after surgery! He is so wonderful and he has never said ANYTHING about my weight. However, he told me that he was looking forward to us riding horses together in the future and it had crossed his mind (before we even talked about surgery) that he was missing experiencing that with me.

So, not only am I doing this for me but it will impact our lives so positively! I will be able to do so much more living with him. I also care for my mother and that will certainly help me be around for her.

I know these random thoughts will pop in and out and may increase in frequency as we all get closer, but we are all doing this not only for ourselves but also to be healthier for our loved ones! I don't think it is selfish at all!

Happy we have sooo many in this group going through it together! We will have so much to share with each other leading up to and after our surgeries!

I'm so excited for all of us!

I don't have a firm date yet but should be early December. I started this journey in late February. All my tests are done, 6 months of NUT is done. I have been approved by insurance and will get a firm date next week. I'll be 64 on Halloween so I'm probably the oldest one on this journey.

Welcome to the Decembers group! I will add you to the unknown date list and move you up when you confirm a date!

I've been having hip and knee issues this year too. I've never had these issues before so I'm hoping getting the weight off will help and it's not past the point of no return!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
