Shrinking Violets -- April 07 Bandsters

Recommended Posts

Hi all! Re: Protein Shakes - I checked with my band dr this morning at my pre-op appt - I asked what kind of "protein shakes" is he talking about - like slimfast opti, Atkins, etc - he said NO NONE OF THEM!!!! B/c they are WAY too high in carbs. He have me a list of websites that have the Protein shakes, drinks, powders. Some are at GNC. As a "rule of thumb" you want at least 20g protein with LESS THAN 5g carbs per serving.

Just a little FYI to all my bandster friends!

Bandedme 4/5/07

The ones specifically labled "Low Carb" are ok though. Slim fast has a version that's "Low Carb" ((not Optima - that one's different - look for the words "Low Carb")). Also, Adkin's "Advantage" brand (that's what I drink). They have between 4 and 6 g of carbs per can (depending on flavor). And there are other brands out there too, but I find the Advantage brand and I like it, so I'm sticking with it until (or if) i get sick of it.

Just wanted to let you know about those...They're probably cheaper than the special ones you have to buy online...My advantage ones cost about $6 for a pack of 4 at Wal-Mart.

I have to say that I find it so very interesting that all these docs are saying "low carb this" and "low carb that" and "limit your daily carbs to 30 or less".....

Dr. Atkins must be havin' a field day (wherever he is)!! All those years they poo-poo'd his work (and others) and now they finally get it. Never thought I'd live to see the day.

CONGRATS! I don't have a pre-op diet either, but do have to do liquids only, but can be shakes and such- day before and nothing after midnight, lets hope surgery is in the am

Tracy

Yikes I hope you like them too. I love those crazy little "to go" packets you can add to plain bottled Water, I hope I can find something like that.

March is almost over!

the jumpstart phase works, as I've already lost 28lbs, but it did not work after I had my son. I hve the diet guiedlines somewhere, I'll grab them and post it if you would like. I would not pay the money, they require you to eat a ton of food - healthy food - but a lot, so i don't think you could do it after the band. But a good guideline I guess.

****************

Jenn,

Yes, please post for me if you find it. What about all the supplements? Aren't there bars and drinks you have to have? What is the jumpstart phase? Maybe I could start on that. It makes me laugh :) that you said "they require you to eat a ton of food, and we can't eat that with the band" <---- I can not wait for that day:clap2: ! When I went to Metabolic I thought I would starve to death at first:angry !

Hi GR8--We'll have to keep in touch a little closer considering your day is the exact as mine--Have you found any good tasting Protein Shakes?

weight.png

Hi Ana -- I bought the Smart Forme that was suggested and referenced in the book the doctor's office gave me -comes in Chocolate; Strawberry; and vanilla. The nice thing about these - they are premeasured servings in envelopes. I travel alot - so easy to pack and use.

They have 35grams of Protein and 250 calories.

I have heard of alot people using Champion Nutrition that I believe has 55grams in 2 scoops.

Keep in touch!:)

Have you tried going to Sam's or Cosco? You might find them much less there.

I had to cancel my surgery today. My grandfather has gone into the hospital and it doesn't look like he will make it through the week. He's been in ICU since early Saturday morning, and it's just really a waiting game, for lack of a better term. So, I can't travel. I don't know when I will. Before I sound completely insensitive, please understand that he's almost 90, has been in a wheelchair for the last 7 years with no use of his right side and complete aphasia (sp?). (He's stroke victim.) Truthfully, his passing would be a blessing for him, a once robust and very active man.

I can't get my deposit back because it's less than two weeks before surgery and they won't make exceptions. I scheduled for late June just to have something to look forward to...

I'm so depressed.

Hello all... I'm Tracy and I'm starting this thread because I just found out that I'm scheduled for Surgery on April 26, 2007.

Now, this is NOT what I wanted... I thought I would for SURE be a March Bandster and hoped for February, but I'm taking the news with stride and picking myself up and dealing with it......

SO... what I've decided to do is get a head start on Spring (and my surgery date) Setting a goal to lose 25 lbs before April 26th. I have to do this because otherwise my "farewell to food tour" will have be tipping the scales in the wrong direction..

SO... any other April Bandsters out there let me know and I will add you to the list! But EVERYONE is welcome to post.... :)

HEAD START TO SPRING!

Hi Tracy, I was scheduled for March 29 and rescheduled for April 11:faint: , so I guess I'm now an April bander!

Good luck to you all, Amourette here, aka Fiona, don't get too carried away with all these things you think you need, you just need some good old plain Soup, apple juice, Protein Powder is good, but I don't think many of you will use it for long! Just make sure your enviroment is comfy, good dvd's, good visitors, some good books and mental support , that is all really, some get pain after, some don't, I am a big woose and I survived it all!!!

good luck to you all, it is so exciting!

Good Morning all

Welcome everyone

Heather, I am so sorry and understand about your grandfather, We got a call about my gram on xmas eve - same type of situation- and you will never guess... she is still ticking. Very very sad thing.

I am sorry you have to reschedule and lost your deposit, but think about it this way, things happen for a reason and June will be here before you know it.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
