In Reference To Marijuana

Recommended Posts

Man I really hope i dont get banned for asking this but I don't know where else to turn. Prior to surgery I was a regular grass smoker (with a medicinal card) but am curious as to how safe it is after surgery because I know that cigarette smoke is harmful and can cause ulcers. Sometimes I really don't care to eat and it helps me force some Protein in me but I don't want to hurt myself. My surgeon told me he honestly doesn't know if it's as harmful as cigarette smoke but assumes it is. There's nothing on the internet about it either so I've kind of run out of resources :[

Kaylee, I can't see why you shouldn't be able to ask that. However I don't know that you are going to get a reliable answer from anyone. Even if somebody has been doing it without any issues, doesn't mean they won't start to get them down the line. I think the question is whether you really need it and if there are alternatives? I have a serious back condition that requires me to take NSAIDS that also cause ulcers. My doctors are busy trying to find other management options ahead of the surgery. If its medicinal use I would go back and push a bit harder with your doc.

Not sure how the THC will affect your metabolic system. If its the smoke that is the only problem, then your best bet would be a vaporizer. It only gives you the THC and no smoke. It can take a bit of getting used to, because you are not going to cough. No smoke just a cloud of vapors. It is the only way it tastes like it smells. But it does use a lot of green. No longer a smoker myself, but what can I say, I was a teen at one time in my life. Also try cooking it with a sauce. There are tons of was to cook with it if you look online. In order for the THC to be released and active, it has to be heated to at least 325 F. However speculation says it can slow down your metabolic rate, and that is counterproductive. Good luck on your journey and yes, by all means, stay away from actually smoking. No filters and the heat is ten times stronger than the pissy little protection of a filter.

I think it would cause harm because it's still smoke going into your body:pouch.

No idea if it would be harmful or not but could definitely lead to snacking and possibly too much eating. Could get some bad habits back if not careful.

Has anyone been rescheduled or declined from surgery for smoking marijuana? I don't smoke cigarettes...never have, but have I "have a friend" :) that likes to partake in the herb. I have my preop blood work next week and I know they are testing for nicotine...weed has none. Any thoughts? And...yes, I know all the soapbox worthy advice. Thanks in advance for leaving the preaching at church.

I just had my labs done a week ago and was totally surprised to find out that my case manager had ordered a UA toxicology screen for common drugs (both prescription and not). She had not mentioned it earlier.....

My doctor didn't test for anything. I would suggest investing in a vaporizer, that way your not inhaling smoke. I was also wondering about edibles, but I didn't think anyone n here would be able to answer that either.

I actually just decided to call my surgeon... Was tired of stressing about it. My surgeons nurse said it would not hurt anything.... Just to lay off until surgery bc it will affect anesthesia... She said it is not a big deal... Def. Wouldn't cancel surgery bc of it. Hope this helps anyone else looking!!

My doctor said the same thing... Pretty much. Nothing 3 months prior to surgery. She said invest in edibles as the smoke is bad and she has no research to indicate that the vape is safe.

I have a friend who had bypass about a year and a half ago who relied on NSAIDs for relief of significant back and shoulder pain. Her doctors are both aware of and in agreement with her use of marijuana for managing her pain post-surgery. She was also given the "edibles over inhalation" advice.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
