I have UHC Choice Plus - they paid 100%, I was banded for $40, so far. Free Seminar, $20 co-pay for consultation, $20 co-pay for pre-op. I went to an appointment today which was a follow-up from my surgery and didn't have to pay anything. I think you should be ok - you should be able to go online to myuhc.com and get information on your insurance policy. Can't wait until you guys are banded.

Waiting is the hardest part. Waiting on my medical records to give to the attorney who's going to file an appeal on my behalf. I've really lost faith in United Healthcare and don't really beleive anything they say. I'm hoping the attorney will be the one to deal with them from now on. I just pray and pray that my denial gets overturned. I wish I'd have read all of this information BEFORE I turned in my first predetermination--maybe I wouldn't have gotten turned down.

Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Hey everoyne, I am new to this site. I am waiting on approval through UHC and I have a question from the people that have been approved in 2007 through UHC. Did you have to submit a 5 year history of a BMI 35 or higher?

I called my insurance like 3 times last month and they said they didnt need a 5 year history with my benefits, but then when my Drs office submitted my paperwork the UHC today they said they needed a 5 year history even thought it doesnt say this in my benefits. Im so frustrated.

See this is the mess I'm talking about. They received myt papers on March 1st, and it is still being decided yet yours reached their office and you got a response on the SAME day! BS

I mentioned this earlier but UHC once told me to go ahead and have the lap band--that because it was outpatient I didn't need approval. Then two days later I got a denial letter. We're appealing but I swear I've never seen a insurance company so inconsistant.

No I didnt get a response, my Dr.s office submitted my paperwork on friday and I have no response yet. But they did tell us that I need to submit a 5 year history of a BMI over 35. Which is what makes me mad because I was told 3 times that I didnt need that.

I called yesterday and was told the file was CLOSED on March 10, 2007 but there was nothing in the system that could be seen to say whether that was a approval or denial! What kind of crap is this! BTW they gave me yet ANOTHER number 866-297-9393

oops my computer freaked out and messed up my last post...but it was supposed to be....

I am pretty upset, I found out that I am probably going to be denied from UHC because I do not have a 5 years worth of hisory having a BMI of 35 or over, eventhough they told me three times that they did not need it! And now they are throwing in that I have to be 21 (I am 20) which they NEVER said anything about before! I am really sad about this, I guess in July when I am 21 I will try and appeal.

I spoke with someone at UHC and they stated give them 30 days WTH? They began to review on 3/3/07, so that's giving them 4/2/07. Or is that working days? This doesn't sound too good. Anyone on here, UHC told you to give them 30 days to make a descision and got approved?:omg: Please tell me yes!

I waited 30 days and then got denied by UHC. But, they sent mine to the wrong department.

I am in the process of appealing now. But, I was never given a reason for denial. I know my plan covers it but they didn't tell me what I was lacking to qualify. So, I had to get an attorney and I hope they can make sense of it. If I had it to do over, I'd get a copy of my "plan booklet" and find out what they were looking for BEFORE I submitted it. I had to call my husband's work and request one, UHC doesn't give them out because they are different from employer to employer.

I am concerned about the 5 years of BMI over 35. I don't have that. The diets I have tried would work and then I'd gain it back so I have weights in the last 5 years that are under 35.

If you lose an appeal can you just go and apply again? I read somewhere on here that this girl applied 3 times in 4 months and eventually they said yes. Is that the case? Seems like they'd just see that you just appealed and deny you right off the bat.

I may need to build my case better next time. I haven't been formally diagnosed with any major health problems either and I'm only a 38 BMI.

I'm in the process of getting all my ducks in a row to have this surgery, so I've called UHC 4 times in the past 2 weeks, just to make sure I have everything I need to get this approved. I have UHC choice, a BMI of 37, and HBP. Each of the times I have called, I've got a slightly different answer.

At first I felt positive about this, that I would qualify without any problems, but each time I talk to someone else there, it sounds more bleak...I meet the criteria, but I still worry that it won't go through....this waiting and wondering is awful! Can you tell I'm a little impatient? :D

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
