Okay, so i am 3.5 months out from surgery, and my hair is fine, but my fingernails - ack! They are dry and brittle, and have broken off so short that I look like I must be a chronic nail biter or something. Anybody else have this? Any tips? I am taking my Vitamins, and doing 1 Protein Shake a day, plus protien at each meal.

I lost a little hair about 4 months post op, but it's grown back, my nails have never been better. They are long and strong and I have to cut them regularly for work. I take 2000mg of Biotin everyday and make sure I get 60-80grams of Protein a day. How much protein are you getting each day? I don't drink any of my protein. If I drink a Protein Drink it's in the very early morning to take my meds with - but I make sure I consume all of my protein during the day.

Hello lap band ladies! Sorry I've been missing the past few days. My daughter's wedding was tonight and it has been a crazy couple of days. I have to say, though, it was absolutely beautiful. I will post some pics later, but I am just beaming from ear to ear. She looked amazing, the ceremony was great, the dinner was lovely, etc etc.

Miss you guys and I'll catch up again soon.

I had the same thing. I started taking those chocolate chewable calium supplements. I take 2 every day I think about it. I was just thinking about it yesterday because after about 3 weeks I have long beautiful nails again! It can also get your chocolate fix in. I'm not a sweet-aholic.

I forgot about the calcium chews. I take the GNC ones! I prefer them because they are really like candy. I take 2 caramel and 2 chocolate. I put them in my pocket in the morning and just eat one when I feel like a treat! I also do a chewable multivit, chewable echinecea (sp?) with zinc and vit c and an extra chewable vit. C.

My nails are terrible too and just peel apart. I have been taking Biotin, maybe I should up my Calcium though. My hair is much better since I started the biotin though.

my hair is the worst ever!! i seriously have mass handfuls of hair every time i take a shower.. I get enough Protein and my Vitamins in, I recently got a bunch of blood work done and they all came out fine.. I dont know what it is!! =( ..

I also just got on my TOM and i feel like i am dieing, for a while when i was heavier I sometimes skipped periods or they were light, now its bad.. I dont know if this is mother nature, getting back at me or what.. it sucks.. I was at a plateau before i started my TOM where i didnt lose any weight last week..but i stepped on the scale this morning and I had lost almost 4 lbs.. ugh! it's toying with me!

I can't wait for denver and my fill, but i am also worried about the snow.. I'm not one with the snow.. Though we have tons of it here in sw washington/portland area..

Well i'm headed to the gym early today since my soccer was canceled due to the snow..

I actually noticed just this past week that my hair is thinner as well. I've not actually seen more hair coming out (no more than normal) when I shower or brush, but it's definitely obvious to me while I'm blow-drying my hair. Which is both shocking and sad to me, because I'm only 6 weeks out and I've only lost 14lbs! I might be bald at the end of all this!

I've decided to make a conscious effort to have at least one Protein Shake a day, and take my children's chewables Vitamins, and I may even get some of those Viactiv calcium chews too!

For me, the Viactiv Calcium Chews were gross. They were gritty and not good. I prefer the GNC Calcium Chews. They are soft and not gritty and taste like tootsie rolls.

Hi everybody,

Thanks for the tips on helping my nails. I went to Walmart today and got the Biotin, and also found some calcium chews that are very tasty, and cheap too:

Spring Valley Natural Calcium Chews, chocolate flavor. They were about $5.50 for a bag of 90. They come in a yellow pouch, and were right next to the other kinds.

Hey Banditos!

Whew, what a crazy time. I still have shopping to do, cleaning to do and cooking/baking! I picked up some kind of bug over the weekend and this morning I feel yucky, terrible timing! Hope everyone is doing better than I am.

I take the Spring Valley calcium chews too, I love them. Both the chocolate and the caramel are yummy.

Hah, looks like I can't go wrong with the Spring Valley ones! I'll hit up my local Walmart tonight. Or perhaps I should avoid Walmart until after Christmas...maybe I'll just order them online, LOL.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
