Would You Have Weight Loss Surgery Again?

  1. 1. Knowing what you know now about weight loss surgery, would you do it again if you had the chance to make your decision again?

    • Yes, without a doubt! The surgery has been everything I’d hoped for.

    • Yes, probably. The journey hasn’t been easy, but I’m losing weight and feel that this was my best option.

    • Yes, but I would have chosen a different type of weight loss surgery.

    • No. I’ve had complications and my health has suffered and/or I haven’t been hitting my weight loss goals.

    • I haven’t had the surgery yet, but I’m looking at the results of this poll carefully to help me make my decision!

Nope. I put my life at risk and now my marriage is at risk. Not worth it.

I've gone back and been reading some of the posts. Anna, I hope things are going better for you. But, I think you probably saved your life with surgery. I know I did, not just save my life, but get living back. Some of us, our lives were more at risk before surgery than after. I never thought I would ever have weight loss surgery. But hey, sometimes you have to just cut to the chase and go for the gusto, instead of messing around trying and not succeeding.

My husband has been so-so with the support. He was there at the hospital when I had the surgery, but left me alone for the two days I was there until I came home. Says he can't abide hospitals. Well, he is more supportive now, but that doesn't mean we aren't on issues over this sometimes. He found out the other day, he now has a BMI of 30, which makes him, yes, yes, OBESE. So, he's having his issues.

However, I am almost completely pain free now, and am learning to slow my life down and enjoy not just meals, but everything...Again, I hope this finds your life going so much better. I'll keep praying for you and everyone here.

I'd do my surgery again every day of the week and twice on Sunday!!! I'm not officially at goal yet, but I'm LOVING life these days!!! :)

Looking Great Lissa! I'll be putting some before and after pics on myself soon. Maybe in a couple weeks, when I've hit the 75 lb loss mark.

Please do not judge low BMI ers. We all have a story to tell. I am 5'2 and just because I had a lower BMI doesn't mean that I wasn't considered to be obese. That's a hard word to swallow. I went into this with my eyes wide open, I inhaled all of the information, good and bad, that I possibly could and then went forward. Yes, I did have to go to Mexico for the surgery and had no health problems but...my insurance that said I "wasn't heavy enough" for WLS should thank me since I come from a long line of obesity and health problems because of it. Maybe it would be in their best interest to help us "low BMI ers " before it does come to that. I was fortunate enough to have the resources available to me to travel to Mexico and have it done, not everyone does. So, no, I do not regret my decision. I am almost 7 weeks out and may come across regrets down the road, but not yet. I feel terrible for the ones that have had complications with their surgeries as we all went into this trying to better ourselves. I have lost 16.6 lbs in that 6 and a half weeks and feel very good most says. I was tired but with a little Iron in my system I perked right up.

No judgement here, if I could have had this when I had a pre 30 BMI, I would have. I would have stopped this before it became the nightmare it was. My husband is 5"11, weight is 215, looks pretty good, but he's gained 40 pounds in the last 5 years, and he is a man with heart problems. So, when he heard from the physician that he was considered obese, it's got him thinking.

My friend went to Mexico, and had no problems, her only thing is she thought it was a magic wand, and eats like she did before. No judgement there either, if my insurance hadn't picked this up, I'd been on the plane with her. You did what was right for you to keep it from being a horror for you later. I applaud your decision.

Didn't you meet with a nutritionist before surgery?

I was told my post-op diet would consist mostly of Protein and that I would have to take daily Vitamins -- I was not surprised! Honestly taking Vitamins and eating Protein are 2 very minor things to gain my health and life back!!

Of coarse every1 have 2 meet with the nut. & I am answering the question & that's how I feel every1 has there own opinion

I haven't had the surgery yet, but I just wanted to share what my surgeon told me at our consultation about marriage and WLS. He said that if your marriage is good then WLS will be absolutely awesome for the relationship, but that if your marriage is not good then you better "Start labeling your stuff" So, I think it is pretty common to have relationship issues after WLS.

So you knew you would have to take Vitamins daily for the rest of your life...yet you are complaining about it.

I got to tell you, that doesn't make sense!

I would do it again! I'm only a few weeks out, but its been a great experience so far. I am one of these "low BMIers" that some of you seem to despise. My BMI was 38, and I had no comorbidalties. I've seen a recent post on here say that people people who are slightly overweight shouldn't be allowed to have the surgery. But, having a BMI of 30-40 isn't slightly overweight, it's OBESE. Even if I didn't have any health issues, just being obese is amajor threat. I've seen all of my family suffer from heart disease and diabetes, so why would I wait until I have them too to get this under control?

I had my sleeve done on May 22nd and I wouldn't repeat this if I could have viewed what it would be like afterwards. I regret it fully. It won't even be worth it when I'm a 100lbs lighter....which would put me at 164 as of today. Yes, I miss food. Mostly, I'm annoyed I could die by eating a sunflower seed. This is crazy. Should have done 3 lean and greens.

Its to late now so I'm dealing with it.

Lastly don't be offended if someone post something you do not agree with. Seriously, its called freedom of speech.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
