Im on the pre-op diet too...although i wish it were on the list' date=' I don't think ice cream is on the full liquid list (at least not mine).... Only b/c of the amount of sugar/carbs it has. Light/non fat/ yogurt is a great substitute.[/quote']

Thanks for the response this diet is horrible along with these food commercials..lol.

I am on pre-op diet taking those shakes but my nutricionist told me I could have one meal a day consisting of only Proteins and vegetables. It is good to have this kind of break.

It is funny this whole pre-op diet thing... my brother and my mother had the gastric bypass done and they didn't need to do the pre-op diet. I guess each doctor has his/her own protocol.

I keep reading about a pre-op diet. Is it Clear Liquids? Protein Shakes? Just curious. My surgeon didn't require me to do a particular diet. I was asked to lose 10% of my 70 lb excess weight, so I had to lose 7 lbs( although I think I have 80 -90 lbs excess weight )

What exactly is the definition of excess weight? Is it the amount of weight to get into the normal bmi range or is it the amount of weight you want to lose or you Dr. Wants you to lose. If it is the second, isn't EW very subjective? If someone can explain, I'd live to know?

You are not the only one confused. There is no standard for "excess body weight".

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21159563

That is crazy. I would think it would be incredibly easy to manipulate data for research purposes. If the surgeon sets the patients goal weight fairly high and the patient just does okay, but never reaches goal, the surgeon could say his patients average 85% of EWL (or whatever the % is) which sounds great, but the patient could be overweight or even obese. Unbelievable that there is no standard. Too bad it is so arbitrary. For me I consider my excess body weight to be anything over a normal bmi.

I agree, I'm thinking excess body weight would be the amount of weight that takes us out of a healthy bmi.

So there would/could be anywhere from 1-20 lb difference in desired weight as the bmi numbers give a low/high weight.

The fun thing about the medical world is that half of the chit is made up :P And in this case, BMI is actually a greatly debated item as well. I had a nurse who was overweight on the BMI chart. She was a very healthy athlete and her muscle mass was significant, but she was not overweight.

For me a goal of 128 would be "healthy" though I know that 128 is overweight on my frame. I am shooting for a weight I was easily able to maintain in the last ten years of 110. 99 puts me in a healthy BMI as well...but I know that would be unhealthy having been that small in the past.

Often patients choose weight goals that are quite high if using a BMI. Many who have never been normal weight will pick weights 40 or 50 lbs too high for them selves because they just don't know, or can't imagine what xyz might look like on their frame. So a doc using a patients pick would end up with all kinds of crazy goals to work from.

It's kind of like a doc who advertises he's never had a leak during surgery. Well that sounds great right? Especially to someone who hasn't studied the surgery much. If a doc lets a patient leave the table with a known leak they'd be grossly negligent. But that does not look as good in adds as to say they've never had a leak during surgery :) It's all the fun medical chit at play :) (I saw this claim recently and it made me laugh, hence the reference). I'm sure the docs who are using the higher number to track against don't want to be forced to use a national average as it would screw with their advertising. Afterall, who wants to see the doc who has patients who only acheive 40% of their weight loss goal as opposed to 85%????

Geez.....didn't mean to be confusing or use incorrect terminology.

I'm 5'3 210lbs losing 70 lbs will give me a bmi of 24 which is " healthy" according to most charts. I have sleep apnea, hypertension and PCOS.

My Dr goal for me is 140.

I personally don't like the term " overweight" so I use "excess weight". Purely a personal preference :)

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
