How Many Times Did You Make Yourself Sick....

Recommended Posts

...before you learned how to eat? I have done it twice already. I eat TOO fast and it is so hard for me to stop...LOL I am usually starving by the time I eat so I want to scarf down my food but then get the "BUBBLE" in my chest and feel like I'm gonna die. FOUR SPOONFULS is all I can get.

This is WAY harder than I expected. I'm NOT complaining just wanting to vent. And I know it will get better. I didn't think it would be like this LOL.

I used to say "I eat when I'm full...that's how I got this big" my friend (who had the surgery) would say you will NOT be able to after your surgery. I didn't believe her....but OMG I DO NOW!!!!

How far out are you? I'm on week three and I've eaten too fast/too much a couple of times. Your best bet would be to measure/weigh everything you eat. What does your NUT recommend for your meal size? For me, it's supposed to be 3-4 ounces, although that's pushing it for me at the moment.

As far as hunger is concerned, could it be acid instead? Your stomach is going to produce a lot more acid than you need for at least a month or so and an acid reducer and Tums help a lot. I find if I think I'm hungry, I'll chew a couple of Tums and it takes care of it.

Good luck!

I confess, I'm the CEO of the "I Eat Too Fast, Therefore, I Slime Club." I have always been a fast eater. It seems to happen more when I'm eating out with friends. Trying to keep up, maybe? At home, I can get up, do a chore, come back to my food. Harder to do when eating with others. At least we know what our problem is. Good luck!

My best advice is to put down your fork wherever you are home, work or out with friends. When you are chewing focus on that, do not talk, just do your chewing, put down your fork. Wait then to speak when you have swallowed that small fork of food. It takes some work but you will get very used to it. I have been doing this with my band for years, revising to sleeve on the 10th, and you get so used to it you don't even realize that you are doing it!!

I'm 6 days post op and had my follow up today with my surgeon. I got permission to start pureed or "applesauce" consistency foods. Although I haven't been hungry, I was advised to have something anyway 3 x a day, 1-2 tbsp at this stage. I decided to have some cottage cheese. I ate slow, took small bites, but I think because I'm so paranoid of NOT knowing what I'm supposed to feel, I ate the 1 tbsp and stopped. I hear about the pain and this "slime" (which I really don't know what it is yet) - and I think I'm afraid of feeling all of that.

I'm sure as I get more comfortable with the sleeve, I will find my limits as I'm sure they will be pushed may times. For now - and so soon after...I'm afraid!

5 weeks out and did it once missing a fun night out with girlfriends because it hurt so bad for about an hour and almost slimed! 2 other times there was a little bit of pain but I am learning that is my full signal and I do not dare take one more bite. There was a week I struggled with not getting to take a last bite, just some mental satisfaction thing related to head hunger. Now I seem to know how little to put on my plate and I also try to ask some one at the table a question after every 2 small bites to slow myself down.

I have gotten sick three or four times - had my surgery in May.

One trick is to never let yourself get too hungry. It does seem like I am "managing" my hunger all day long to keep it under control, but if I get too hungry I am doomed to overeat. It is strange that I seem to think about and plan my eating to such a greater extent now than before.

Another trick is to figure out how much fits comfortably in your stomach of a given food, and then consistently measure out that amount. That way, even if you eat too fast you are much less likely to make yourself sick. I do this with almost every meal now.

These are just a few ideas that helped me - I'm sure you will find those things that work for you. Good luck!

I honestly think it is head hunger. For example. at work I feel like I have to get lunch so I have been buying me Soup or mashed potatoes and getting sick because I'm trying to eat more than four spoons. Now I'm just not eating lunch. It doesn't seem worth it to make myself sick. The soup is not giving me any nutrients nor are the potatoes. So I'm just drinking to get my fluids in and taking my protien shot WHICH I HATE!!! Maybe I'll try a shake later for protien. I'm not forcing anything anymore....BLAH

I've read on the boards that the Protein shots aren't suitable because they are collagen Protein and not whey protein. Maybe you've already discussed this with your NUT, but you might want to consider a shake as a protein source.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
