April Sleevers Losing Hair?

Recommended Posts

I've started losing hair recently! I had read that it might happen, but I guess I really didn't believe it. My hair is very thick and heavy so i can spare quite a bit, but how much am i going to lose? Three and a half months out from surgery now. Anyone else just starting to lose hair?

Oh yes. Handfuls of it. Sleeved April 4, hair started falling out at the end of June. I don't have long hair, so I've gone with a really short pixie cut which has gotten lots of compliments (not many 50 year olds with pixie cuts. lol) I did some extensive research and learned that the hair fall is due to the surgery and the wls and it's a temporary problem with VSG. For some of the other bariatric surgeries, it can be permanent due to long term/chronic malabsorption which doesn't have to be a problem for sleevers. Ensuring you have enough Protein helps with the regrowth but does NOT stop the fact of Hair loss. The amount happens on a continuum, from a little bit more than normal to a LOT. I'm clearly going to fall on the LOT end of the spectrum.

I have decided I don't care. I would rather be slim than anything else, so if the hair loss gets too bad, I'll be shaving my head a la Demi Moore or wearing wigs a la Dolly Parton. In the meantime, I'm doing all the things the nut says to do, and am expecting the hair loss to last about 2-3 months.

Yes, me too. My surgery date was 3-27, and clumps are falling out. All I can do is hope that it stops soon.

Hi, sleeved 3 April here and my hair is falling out in handfuls. I have thick hair and not too worried at the moment. I did have similar hairloss when I did the liquid diet lighterlife 6 years ago. I didn't go bald then so I am confident I won't go bald this time but it is a bit worrying when washing my hair how much does come out.

I was sleeved april 13th and definitely losing a lot of hair now. I have baby fine thin hair to begin with so I'm totally gonna be bald soon!

Been going on for a while with me since pre-op dieting and going down to 1200 calories. After surgery it's continued but I have a lot of new Hair growth too, I cut my hair shorter so I am not dragging the brush down the length of my hair, that helped. My hair is still ok - I can still style it so it looks healthy and even my stylist said it's doing ok, just be gentle to minimize the loss. I do take Biotin with my B-Complex and always get my Protein in.

I'm in the same boat. I was sleeved 3/5/12. Any special kind of Vitamins to help slow or help regrow hair?

I am losing a good bit too. Currently trying apple cider vinegar rinsing. It is said to regulate scalp ph. I don't know if it will do anything, but it's worth a shot. Hopefully it will stop on its own soon???

I can totally relate! My hair bass been falling out for the past couple of weeks. My hair is thin and done to begin with. I'm trying not to stress out about it but it has always been a sensitive subject. Still, I am so happy with my sleeve. Best thing I have ever done for myself. food luck to you.

I was sleeved April 24th and started losing lots of hair! Chopped several inches of last week in hopes that less length will help....that, and I was tired of long hair. Needed something new to go with the new me!

My hairdresser said it's not as bad as I made it out to be....and I agree, I would rather be bald and skinny!

i gave in and had my hair cut SHORT - only slightly longer than bald. I'm not sure if I like it, but I'm getting lots of attention. So far, the best response has been "funky!" I, too, would rather be skinny, so I'll just rock out the new look until my hair comes back. The hairdresser told me she thinks I've thinned out about 40% (Yikes)

I regularly remind myself that it's temporary. Hopefully, that's the truth. ;)

I have just returned from the hairdressers and I have had mine cut shorter. I warned her that lots would come out in shampooing and it did! though she did say I have more than plenty left which is good.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
