I haven't been banded yet, just starting the research process and trying to get insurance straightened out.... anyway, I have unintentionally given up my daily 44 ounces of caffeine-free diet coke and started drinking Water and crystal light for the past 3 days! I'm excited. I figure I might as well keep it up since I've already started to "give up" my beloved sodas...

My doc told us that if we must drink Coke, drink it flat. Now, why would I do that???? He said that after 6 months, we could drink a coke.

I've never been a big fan of "cokes" (what we call everything carbonated in the south). They're "okay", but nothing I lay awake thinking about at night. My only experience with carbonation since the band has been with some of the energy drinks. I am an early morning person. I fade at the end of the day. I went through a period about a month ago where I was flat on my desk practically snoring at 2:00 pm....dragging myself through the afternoon. I broke down and got one of those "Rock Star" energey drinks. They are highly carbonated. I took tiny sips. It hurt at first and then it stopped. It did wake me up quickly though and I drank those in the afternoon for a couple of weeks until that stage was over. I didn't have any adverse reaction past the first sip, the first day....and that may have been because it was cold.

I haven't wanted to. I didn't drink it on my pre-op just because I didn't care. I've only ever drank diet and diet's not that great.

I think a big deterrent for me was that my post-op gas pain was so bad, and it lasted for a week and a half, that when presented with the concept of potential gas-pain again, I shudder.

I used to drink Sprite every day, maybe a few a day. I am proud of myself and can say I have not had Sprite (or any soda) since the day of my seminar which was well over a month ago. It was one of the best decisions I've made.

Now, my surgeon says NO CARBONATION! And as of now, I have no desire to have any. I know if I have one, I will want more and more. I'm good without it. Water and Crystal Light are my thing now. :)

I still drink it, I mostly try to sip it or wait til it goes flat. I can definately tell when I try to drink it 'normally'..the difference it has on me now since i've had the band.

I'm mostly drinking pepsi's now though just to get those codes underneath the cap...lol.

BTW, if any of you guys drink pepsi, mt.dew, slice...etc and get ones that say "call your play" with a picture of a football player on it, please email me your codes if you have no use for them.

Thanks! :)

My doctors reason for no soda/carbonation is it depletes your calicum.

I was craving a diet dr pepper the other day - i poured in a glass and let it sit for a bit and then sipped it..

I have never been a big soda drinker - every now and then I want one - so no biggie to me - i rather have ice tea = it's the no straw rule that gets me... I have order ice tea from starbucks and after a few sips realized "Im not suppose to drink from a straw) - didn't hurt so whats the big deal - air you swallow air when you drink out of a glass too,

Coke, pepsi, it's all the same...I was told it will make the band more flexible (eating away) letting it expand, thereby defeating our whole purpose. The air in the belly is a second negative effect for most people. True, sounds possible, (it eats the bug stuff off your windshield) Worth it? Not to me personally. I invested too much personally and financially to risk it all for a soda!

I haven't been banded yet, but I do have a soda machine. I can control the amount of carbonation. It's from Soda Club, you can order it online:)

I was an avid Diet Coke drinker or seltzer with lemon for years... My doc said to get out of the habit before surgery because the carbonation expands in your stomach and stretches your stomach. If it's continually done, you're able to eat/drink more and more, therefore reversing the effects of the band.

Maybe it's not true, but I agree with allwright and I'm not going to test it.

I may try a flat one @ some point...

Brenda, I've never heard it explained that way, but it does make sense, which is one of the reasons I haven't had a soda in almost three years, (tooting my own horn a little).

Plus I remember all the things Coke products do, like cleaning acid off batteries, tenderizing meat, cleaning the toilet, just to name a few.

Better off to stay away from the sodas.

My doctor told me that carbonated drinks can stretch out your pouch. At first it was difficult to give up my diet pepsi, but now I don't miss it.

My doctor said that one of the things that was absolutely forbidden was drinks with gas. Of course i am a curious person and sipped a bit but it feels really bad. My stomach actually feels bloated so i stopped drinking coke. I thought it would be hard because i was such a coke addict but i don't miss it at all.

I love iced tea now ;)

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
