I think there is a misconception from drs. that do lapband and RNY surgeries that the precautions are the same. With the band, the liquid goes right thru the band into your stomach, so why would the carbonation do anything to your band? Unless you drink it right after eating and you aren't suppose to do that anyway with ANY liquid.

Think about it......why would any liquid, carbonated or not, do anything? You still have your complete stomach. The carbonation doesn't stay in your pouch.

That said, I was terrified of drinking diet coke.......thought I would bloat up and explode with one sip.....then I watched my DH get hit on his motorcycle. He wasn't hurt but it stressed me out so bad that I reverted to my old standby for stress, a big diet coke. I walked up to a fountain, got the biggest cup, filled it with ice and pop and sat down and drank the whole thing. No problems....no gas, no bloat, no pain. After that I have a diet coke about once every 2-3 days. I try not to go overboard with it or live off it like I did before my surgery, but it hasn't caused me any problems since I started drinking it again.

My doctor said no carbonated drinks. He has gone to medical school for years and been in practice for years. Who am I to second guess him. I paid him a lot of money to get me this band and guide me through the process. So, if he tells me no carbonated drinks, then no carbonated drinks it is.

Just my .02.

I agree with Susan (we had the same doc). I've tried some small sips, but that's not the same as a big ol gulp, so it just wasn't the same. I miss a few things, like big bites of a big juicy hamburger with all the trimmings, little bites just aren't the same. I REALLY miss my Subway sandwiches for lunch, but can't do the bread so what's the point.

Being halfway to goal by following most of the rules is worth more than any temporary craving I might have.

Just another 2 cents from one of Dr. Herrera's bunch!

Just something to think about....think about adding Alka-Seltzer to a balloon.....it will BLOW IT UP! Just a word of advice to the risk-takers out there....do not risk popping your little balloon for a quick fix of a carbonated beverage. If you are not very tight then you might be Ok, however, if you are tight you will hurt yourself - it's just not worth it.

I didn't drink until I hit goal. Now, I am having one a day. I truly believe coke kills germs and all the stuff floating around here needs killing!!!

My surgeon told me no carbonated drinks what so ever...He says that it blows up and tends to stretch the pouch...Now, have I listened?? Of course not, I love the diet cherry vanilla dr pepper and have had a few since the band and they tasted wonderful but it seems I can only drink about a fourth of one in a sitting before I start feeling kind bloated and bubbly in my pouch

My doctor said wait 6 months after banding... then the occasional soda or beer is ok - but not all the time.

Well, I had an addiction to diet sodas before banding. I didn't know HOW I was going to survive witout my diet pop!

But after banding, I simply gave it up completely, due to my surgeon saying NO CARBONATED beverages. It was a lot easier than I thought.

Shrug...Now I can not stand the taste of diet anything. I prefer Water and I bet my body thanks me for it.

Please be careful with carbonated beverages...

Our doc (wife and mine) told us they'd prefer NO soda, period, end of statement; but with that being said, that if we MUST have a soda, flat, in a cup, not out of a bottle or can and NEVER use a straw.

Since I was banded (July of 2004, now down 76 lbs +) I can probably count (maybe using 2 hands) the number of times I have had a soda. Never did like ANY kind of diet soda, and giving up soda (almost) completely, since banding was easier on me than I had thought it would be!

Likie many southerners, I was a Dr. Pepper junkie. So I decided to finish up the Dr. Pepper we had in the house about two weeks after I was banded. It was in June, the first week of school. I drank a glass of Dr. Pepper and had no problem. So I drank several more glasses over a couple of days. That resulted in the worst attack of gas I have ever experienced. It was hell trying to teach a 1 hour and fifteen minute class everyday while trying not to fart. It was like the 2nd or 3rd day after banding when I grossed out a whole airplane. Luckily there was another banding patient on the plane so I blamed her. After the Dr. Pepper, gas pains were also a big part of my day. After that, I haven't touched a carbonated drink. I don't intend to touch one. I never want to have gas like that again. I drink ice Water with a little fruit juice in it. Sometimes I just have apple juice at school since it's easier to carry around. But apple juice actually has more carbohydrate than Dr. Pepper. So I have compromised and drink Water flavored with strawberry/banana Juicy Juice. It seems to work pretty well and I like it.

Alas, I used to like beer. No more. It has gas in it. I check the labels for gas in drinks. I never, never want to have gas like that again though my former students tell me they didn't notice the fact that I was doubled over with gas pains during the first week of summer school. They think the whole thing is hilarious, but I didn't think so at the time. It gets funnier the more distant it gets, but I still avoid any gassy drinks like the plague.

I had my surgery in South Florida. My new doctor (the one I got when I moved north), says that soda will erode your band. :faint: I had never heard that before. I think it's a ploy to keep us off the soda. Have any of you ever heard that? How could soda get to the band when it's on the outside of your stomach?

Just wanted to share - this won't be an issue for me for awhile. It seems that Malawi is running out of carbonation and since the holidays are coming up, the factories are using all the carbonation for beer, hence there is a shortage of sodas in the country.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
