The Last Time I Ask About Hair....i Promise!

Recommended Posts

Okay...here's the deal; I am 10 months post-op and have been losing hair very slowing for five months. I never get the 60-80 gr. of Protein that I'm supposed to, but closer to 40-50. I am approximately 5 lbs under goal...

My question is...will I continue to lose hair as long as I don't get in the Protein OR will my body eventually adjust to my new weight and stop freaking out??

I eat...I get around 1200 calories a day. Will it stop??

at 10 months post-op you should be able to get 60-80 grams of Protein with just food and one shake a day, unless you really have an aversion to protein. I would try to find a way to up your protein and are you taking any Biotin Vitamins?

I can't tolerate the shakes...but I've added a Protein Bar (10 grams) and some string cheese to my day...but 60-80 is sooo much...I must need some Protein secrets!! :)

I do take Biotin and I think its saved me from being bald!

For most people, hair loss stops at about one year post op. You should be over the worst of it.

Your Protein is not all that low. How tall are you? My nutritionist told me the taller you are, the more Protein you need. I am 5'2" and she said I need 60 grams per day.

A cup of plain ff greek yogurt has 23 grams of protein. I put Torrini's sf coconut Syrup in it and it's pretty yummy . You can put sf cheese cake pudding in it too, and that's also very good.

What kinds of things do you eat to get your protein. You asked for protein ideas, so it would help if we knew what you're already eating.

Premier nutrition? Do they suck? I can't stand the usual Protein bar taste.....

And where do I get the Bosley stuff? Right now I use Nioxin.

Thanks for the input!!

I'm 5'1 (and a half)...I eat some Peanut Butter, a 10 gr. Protein bar, some string cheese and whatever my family has for supper....but I need to up it, I know.

I'm so fixated on calories...I've been in diet mode for so many years it's hard for me to eat Protein and not worry about the calories. More protein equals more calories....

Even though I'm under goal, I can't seem to relax yet.

I appreciate the guidance!!

I finally found a Protein Drink I like: Gatoraid recovery3 chocolate. 20 gr Protein. I tried it yesterday & went out to buy more today! I also found that I like Luna bars. My hair is coming out slowly also & I'm only 2 1/2 months post op.

The Premeire Protein drinks are really good. I haven't heard of anyone not liking them. You get them at costco. They are 160 calories for 30 grams of Protein. They taste like choc. milk.

Do you like tuna? tuna is very high in Protein. So are eggs and cottage cheese.

I totally don't get all my Protein in either, I get around 60 grams a day from a 600-700 calorie diet. If I was eating 1200 I could easily fit it all in.

Experiment with different foods, you don't have to do shakes for Protein to get it in. Cheeses, meats, yogurts, Beans and tons of other foods have protein!

At the grocery store you can buy pure Protein Bars, mist if them have 20 grams of Protein,I like a few of them. Our surgeon like s a 10 to 1 ratio as far as calories to Protein, so if a bar as 20 grams of protein it shouldn't have more than 200 calories.

I'm 9.5 months post op and 100lbs down. I have also lost about 50% of my hair. I take 10,000mg of Biotin a day. I aim for 70gm of protien daily. Some days I get more. Some less.

I just read up on silica. It's supposed to work wonders in our situation.

I'm really hoping the hair comes back soon. I'm getting married in just over three month and don't want to be bald!

Good luck.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
