Bread Question

Recommended Posts

Starting at 3 weeks I can have toasted bread, thin deli meat and cheese so I'm wondering about a Subway Club? Does your sleeve seem to tolerate that bread ok toasted? I'm sure I could only get a few bites in but just wondering about the bread. Also, trying to figure out where to eat for my daughter's birthday that I can eat too at 3 1/2 weeks. Possibly anything Mexican or thin and crispy pizza?

Im not going to say stay away from those foods cause they make you fat cause we all know this...but I wouldn't waist my time eating out anything within 3 weeks...You really need to think about your stomach size...A few bites out of a sub will probably be to much, more like two bites and your done...You might get lucky and fit in a very small slice of thin crust pizza but make sure you take care of your Protein requirements some other way cause that wont cut it...Im 6 weeks out and can barely eat 4 crackers with tuna...so the problem isn't the eating the problem is that I think you are really overestimating the capacity of your stomach.

Thanks but just wanting to join in for my daughter's birthday celebration. I know it's not gonna be something I'll want to do everyday but don't want to just sit there while everyone eats if I can nibble on something. I was thinking maybe half a slice but didn't want to do something "too soon".

I had my surgery on 3/22. Since I returned to work I began avoiding eating with others for fear of feeling odd by sitting there eating my miniature meal while everyone around me eats meals that are much more than I can eat for the whole day. The funny thing is that once I decided to try it I found that by concentrating on eating slowly and chewing thoroughly that my meal took as long or longer to eat than other people's. So instead of worrying bout sitting and watching everyone else eat I actually ended up with people waiting for me. So it turned out that I could still participate and stick to my new lifestyle. Every day that goes by I remind myself that I've made a choice that is going to pay me huge dividends. I cannot get sidetracked by worrying what others think about it. food is fuel, and nothing more. Wow! I'm shocked that I can say that and believe it.

I'm a little over 2 weeks, on mush. I had visitors in town this weekend so ate out. Over 4 days at various restaurants I had: Beans, salmon, chicken and tofu mix only from a lettuce wrap order. I ordered a no carb chicken bowl for delivery. I put the grilled chix and cooked veggies in the processor and ate 3 tbs. Check out the Soups and side dishes. I had to sit and watch them eat and it was hard. Planning ahead is a good idea. You could always bring your own food. I stuffed canned tuna in my purse just in case.

I am in my third week. My doctor told me to not eat Pasta and bread even though they are soft, as they form a kind of dough in the stomach. Sounds not good to me.

I'm 5 1/2 months out and I still don't eat hardly any bread. I do not like how it feels in my stomach, like it swells up. After a while you don't really miss it that much. Other than bread I can eat pretty much anything.

this may sound dumb, but here goes. . .when i was about 3 months out, i was still really careful in everything i attempted to eat. . so when my mom and her friend came to visit me for a week, what i did instead of "joining in" with the celebrations (I hadn't seen my mom in over 7 years) I busied myself catering to them. . . when it was time to eat, i made myself a very very small plate and took only Protein, When my mom started in on me, I right away would get up and offer her stuff, more coffee, some cake? How about some alcohol? Lets go sit on the patio, You 2 visit, let me stack the dishwasher. . . I was so busy with myself that i never once missed the celebration with food and it did me good. . .I understand you want to Celebrate your daughters b/day but really there will be one every year. . . it's not like you have to do it this year right? Busy yourself by fussing around her. . cater to her. . But it's your choice, you make the choices for yourself. . .just be careful cause at 31/2 weeks. . . well ask yourself, is the tummy REALLY healed up good enough to prevent a possible leak??????? good luck!

I had surgery 8 months ago, and I still don't eat a lot of bread. My family likes to go to Subway, and my co-workers like Jimmy Johns. At Subway, I order the Soup. Sometimes I add a Protein Soup powder to it to up the Protein content.

I haven't tried it, but I heard Jimmy Johns now offers a breadless sub. I've heard it is good from several people.

I can't eat the bread from a sub even if toasted. It is too thick for me. If I get a sub, I eat just the stuff inside the bread.

If it is a thinner sandwich, I might eat a bite or two of the bread and the inside stuff, but I leave most of the bread.

Early out, Soups are great choices that are available at most restaurants. Cottage cheese is another option that is usually available.

Mexican pizza from taco bell has been one of very few things I can eat. Less then half of course with no meat.. I had my surgery 2/15/12 but I feel nauseous when I eat almost anything and I can't eat meat.< /p>

I had my surgery the day before you and I am the same way. Everything makes me sick. I have not found anything yet that does not make me nauseous and many things make me retch violently. I consume WAY to little.

I have not been sleeved so I'm not much help but this might help if you go out for pizza. When I was doing Atkins i use to get a slice of pizza with extra cheese and eat my pizza with a fork lol I know it sounds weird but what I did was eat the toppins with the cheese first and then have a nibble of the carbs. That way I enjoyed the flavors of the pizza with hardly any carbs and I could still eat with my friends hope this helps you a bit.

I was sleeved 2/6 and bread is still something I'm very careful with. The other day I had a 6" cheesesteak sub and in order to eat it I had to tear off pretty much ALL of the bread except a tiny layer at the very bottom to keep it together. Even then I couldn't eat the whole thing.

That's a really good hint. Cater and be the one who does everything else while others are eating :) I do this anyway, but then after the party I have a huge plate. I guess that won't happen anymore. Thanks

If you go to subway just get tuna salad, no bread. I'm about 3mos out & I eat no bread at all. I tried really dry toast but it felt stuck in my throat. I find now I don't even miss it. Maybe go somewhere that has fish on the menu. I find that fish is the easiest on my stomach, especially white fish (like tilapia) because it is moist. Salmon is a little to dry, but seared ahi tuna is easy...goes down easy, tastes delicious & is packed w/ Protein. Also, Ceasar salad is a good choice, but I'd only eat the chicken since you're too early out for salad. You can eat out & still stick w/ your plan! Good luck :)

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
