Heading out to meet with my mom and the dietician. She's going to give us the info on the diet for when I am post op in a little over a week. I can hardly believe it. It hasn't and has not been that long of a journey for me. I've wanted this surgery for years and my husband was always radically against it. Now he's divorcing me. So I am using the insurance while I have it. I went for my first appointment on 3/22/12 with the doctor. Got all my testing and approval in during a two and a half week time frame. Have lost most of he weight they want me too' date=' and have been approved to have my surgery April 23rd!!!! My soon to be ex doesn't even know a out it. I am

Scared he would try to stop it somehow. So, for years I've long for this, now it is super quickly becoming a reality. I'm excited and nervous![/quote']

Focus on you right now! You have a better life waiting for you! You can do it!

Ok.....So having my gallbladder removed hurt more than this. Im not bragging but I have some discomfort. But its not as bad as I feared. I'm still working on my gas peppermint tea has helped a lot. My mouth is DRY. I'm working to get my liquids down. Sip sip. Im sooo thankful for my Dr.'s & nursing staff. They were the best! Im still walking. Its more comfy than standing.

Well, I did it. Remember I was afraid I'd run off at the last minute and they'd find me hiding under a table in some back room with my gown hanging open? I didn't. :)

April 10 was my day. The anesthes. guy tried 5 times to get an iv into me, blaming me for being dehydrated, nervous, and finally saying after I lost weight this would be easier. Duh. I ended up rolling into the or with no drugs and he gave me laughing gas. Apparently I was no easier to poke when I was out because my arms are blue from bruises and I look like a long term iv user.

Now, I had a whole plan how this was going to happen - easy! I was going to be one of the ones with no gas, little pain, fast recovery. Ha! I suggest you don't make a plan like I did. My nausea was so bad in recovery, all I did was beg for medicine until the nurse said "Honey, that's all I can give you."

Then once I got to my room, the gas pain hit. I've had 4 c-sections (one after 20 hours of labor) and my gallbaldder removed and this gas pain was like nothing I've ever felt. It was parked right under my breast bone and right under an incision and I felt like an alien would be bursting out of me at any time. In fact, I wished for an alien to burst out so the pain would go away! I got a strong narcotic in my iv and that made everything just lovely. No pain, no nausea. But when I sat up, my blood pressure and pulse plummeted. No walking for me. That meant the meds wore off and that darn gas was still parked on my chest.

This is day 3 and I finally feel like the gas is going away. I'm walking now and drinking - though not as much as my dr would like. No regrets - just a word of caution. This is some serious surgery and serious pain can be involved. I hope that no one has to go through horrible pain, but be prepared that you might. The good news - it does go away and we'll all be better in the end.

I had the same problem with the plummeting BP. I had to sit with my head low and was so uncomfy the whole night. They said I had an allergic reaction to the plastic mask so the Benadryl and pain Meds did it. Odd it happened to you too...

Sorry to hear you had a rough time. I can imagine. I had one moment on the second day where the gas pain hit me- I thought I was going to scream. I asked the nurse if anyone ever passed out from the pain and she said it had happened. Hope you are feeling better moment by moment!

Pre-op was supposed to start on Thursday but didn't get back from holiday til last night. Have gained 2lbs on holiday!! Beginning to get stressed about the pre-op diet - whether to just do shakes until op on 26th or follow the pre-op diet that I was given. What to do what to do...

Hey Gang, well it's official. I have my surgery date of April 30'th, got my insurance approval the other day and the firm date yesterday. now it's time to start getting nervous about it. start my pre-op diet next monday, 1 week of low carbs and then 1 week of liquids. Pray for me that I don't kill anyone while I'm on this pre-op diet, I know from past experiance that low carb and I don't get along very well.

Congratulations on getting your approval and date. You are now officially part of the April 2012 gang! I am due to have my surgery on 26th so we'll be going through this at roughly the same time.

I am so glad that I live in Scotland (although I did live in Arlington, VA for a year, as an Au Pair, a lifetime ago - you live in a beautiful part of the world.) if you are going to go crazy during the pre-op period;) See you on the losers bench.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
