African American Sleevers

So I'm new to this site but I'm happy to be here and thrilled to find a forum for black folks. I'm 26 years old with no health issues until I found out I had hypothyroidism 3 weeks prior to surgery which explained the excessive weight gain! This made my choice easier. I'm 4 weeks post-op down 30 pounds sleeved on 9-18-13 and I did this to remain healthy! :-)

Just chew on the ice! And ask for warm broth! Sip on that! When you get home sip on fluids room temperature.. Water is the hardest to get down! Don't panic I promise it gets better! I'm two months out and I only can drink 4 ounces at a time! But I'm excited because I use to only be able to take 4 sips and be done! You will be ok! Congratulations! And welcome to the new you!

Thank you.... Each day i get a little better then the day before.....

Best of luck to you on your surgery. I am 52 now and was 51 when I was sleeved in February of this year. I have lost 97lbs to date and that is with health issues.

Ok my sleeve family I want to know is anyone having issues with the scale at home being different than the one at the doctor? I have been doing really good and I went in today and it showed different than Saturday. I really hope I did not gain 4 pounds when I have not done anything different. I am not giving up but boy that made me feel a little sad. But I am now able to create my menu with all the thing I am use to doing while I was on WW. I just won't be able to eat all the food on the plate and much smaller sizes. I am in phase 3 regular diet.

Different doctors different weight. My surgeon, primary, and nutritionist all has me at least 2 - 5 pounds different! Even at home I don't know what to believe. As long as its going down I just pick the one I like the most :-) All the best!

In the medical realm it is always suggested that you weigh on the same scale with the same type of clothing at the same time of day to get a consistent scale reading. But don't sweat it. I weigh with bra and panties on only at home once per week. Keep in mind if you weigh in the morning you will weigh more in the evening. Water, food, shakes, clothes, exercise can affect your weight as well.

Hello everyone. Im up this morning trying to wrap my mind around my slow loss. Im 6wks post op (sleeved 9/10)and Ive lost only 15 pounds since preop. My doc told me I have 60 more pounds to go but this is really slow. Since 2011, my grand total for weight loss is 42 pounds. I definitely feel better but I dont know what I am doing wrong. I feel restriction in my tummy and still get constipated a lot. I take MOM, all Vitamins and Fiber supplements, exercise, and eat very little. I havent had juice, sweets, rice, pasta or much of anything. I eat a boiled egg for Breakfast or 5 bites of grits/scrambled eggs. For lunch, a small piece of meat or few shrimp. Snack...boiled egg and dinner some type of meat and maybe a few bites of mashed potatoes. I finish all meals by 7 pm. Im not even eating 700 or 800 calories a day. Im considering going bk to liquids for some meals. I just dont know what to do anymore...

A lot of folks on here up their calories a bit and it seems the weight loss picks up. You might try that.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
