My weight loss is so strange. Lose a pound and sit at that weight for a few days, lose another pound and stay at that weight for a couple of days, and so on. I thought this was the speedy weight loss time but I may have to change the turtle on my weight loss ticker to a snail or inchworm!

I'm 3 weeks out now and ready to step up the exercise so that should help.

Your body will lose most if not all the weight that what has not reached its set point regardless of what the nut said. I lost over 100 % of my excess weight the body knows how much to lose and what is the normal weight each persons body is. The body will seek equilibrium and will lose what the body thinks is not ideal for yourself uniquely.

The average weight loss at three years is around 57% excess weight loss. Some do get and keep 100% off, but it is not a "normal" thing to get 100% off and keep it off.

It has been a while since I have logged on... and I just had my 4th month post op visit with my doctor/nutritionist. I have lost 43 pounds in total and am so EXCITED! I feel great!! Now, I am a little bit concerned because the NUT said that I am about 50%. He said most gastric sleeve patients lose 65% of their excess weight. So, that would mean, if I weighed 100 pounds over my IDEAL weight then I am expected to lose about 65 pounds and they consider that to be the norm. NOW, I want to lose the 100 pounds that I am over weight by -- but the NUT made me feel like that was not typical and went one to say that when one is heavy it takes more energy and therefore you lose more weight but once you have lost about 65% of the excess weight it is more difficult... So, is he trying to discourage me or, well, I don't know? So, those of you who have had the surgery and are at the 1 year mark -- did you lose ALL your excess weight or was it the 65% of the EXCESS weight that my NUT was talking about?

I am a new newbie smile.gif I am hoping to have my surgery in December, so excited and still lots of little questions. Can you tell me about the day of surgery, what you experienced, did you have to have catheters, drain tubes etc. I have never had a surgery before other than childbirth, so that part is what freaks me out more that anything. I am having the laprascopic sleeve. Any other details you want to share would be great, pain levels etc.

No catheter or drains here. I was in a lot of pain the first day after surgery because they infiltrated my vein so pain meds we're not being delivered properly. However my overall recovery was a breeze. After about 5 days I stopped taking the Rx pain meds and stuck with Tylenol.

My advice: read everything you can on this site, while some people post some bat sh*t stuff, you will hear common themes and advice. That's the stuff to pay attention to. Good luck.

Good luck.just had surgery last Wednesday. I am a RN and read up a lot on my VSG, but it's still a new experience. I talked to everyone I could and my experiences were similar. The surgery went fine. I had a small hiatal hernia and it was repaired at the same time. I didn't know that my MD used scopolamine Patches for nausea. It works really well for most, but it made me more nauseated. Once we figured that out and it was removed I was feeling better and was able to leave the hospital later the day after surgery. I have five small incisions, pretty bruised, but not painful. I have had major abdominal surgery and have had incisional pain. This is more internal discomfort. Couple doses of pain meds, but then nothing. I was walking around when I got home pretty well.I could shower and am keeping it pretty low key. Driving and moving pretty well. Take all the advice you get from your team. As the others have said, there are some odd thoughts on these forums, but themes are true. Keep telling yourself you can do this and prepare. My husband says I'm a older woman with a new baby tummy. When I think about it that way it makes sense. I'm "raising" a new and improved stomach. It's pretty cool!

I think everyone looses weight differently. My nurse told me you will only get out of the surgery what you put in. I know I need to be better about the exercise,

I'm encouraged by your posts. I'm 4 days post op and doing well. no pain meds for 2 days no nausea. I had a drain tube and a hernia repaired, drain tube was removed the next day and left the hospital. I was nervous until the day of and came to a place of peace. I am up walking and back to work. A little tired and winded after walking. I lost 53 lbs pre surgery and now I feel stuck and can't believe my expectations are so high but I know when I get to exercise it's going to be so much better. I was having a little panic about not getting enough liquids to satisfy my thirst but feel there had been some progress every day. It's 100 + degrees outside and I want to stay cool and keep hydrated. The truth is I'm cooler now than I would have been 53 lbs ago. Keep posting, I find inspiration through your personal stories to keep me motivated.

Hi HKMOM....I know what you're saying....I hurt pretty good right after my surgery so food was almost the last thing on my mind. Once I got to feeling better though liquids, sweet Protein shakes, Jello, all that sweet crap was making me sick so I moved on to Soups. Then they started getting old and making me just wanna puke at the thought of having Soup 3 times a day....But now I know why and the Soup is the only thing I go back to I can not do the shakes and anything that says "diet" or "sugar free" I can't take that aspertain and the sweetners in them so its real or go without. Although I must say I have found a WW ice cream bar that is very refreshing because I'm not a milk person either. It does get better and soon you feel better and kind of forget about eating really thats the way its been for me. Just don't forget your Protein and some liquids.... Hang in there!!!

My expectations are very high as well. I just had a weigh in on Thursday and only 3lbs gone. I made the comment at least I lost some but I'm frustrated. Two months post-op and I've started walking more and I'm back at school so I figure it's taking a little more to keep me going. I'm doing many small snack/meals, because I can't seem to eat very much, through out the day which helps when dinner comes around. But like you I feel like I'm always thirsty and I have a Water bottle with me always....I wonder why this is?? I live down here near Mt.Hood and know of the hot weather you speak of, normally I would be drenched going from class to class but like you said with that extra weight on I'm sure I would be sweating like crazy and I'm not now....I think of all the frustration we are all going thru and I have to remember what our outcomes will be....THINNER for life and more control over food....Amazing!!!

My facilitator has said the same - she said its a 1-2 year process. I had my surgery on June 30. I was 209 and at 5'3" my BMI was relatively low compared to a lot of people so for me, I would have expected that I would lose weight much slower. At just 7 weeks post op I am down 46.6 lbs. I have 33 lbs to go to reach my goal weight. I've lost 58% of my weight so far. I have started to lose slower but its coming off and I'm happy. My goal date is December 17. That is 4 months away with 38 lbs to go. I'm hopeful! ;))

Wow 46 in 7 weeks is a lot!! What's your secret?! Lol. I just hit 43 at 10 weeks, which seems pretty average.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
