October Bandsters!!!

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I am Debora from Tallahassee, Florida. I am 5'4" and 265. I had to work for a year to get 10% of my starting weight (300), weight management class, psychological evaluation, and a seminar and class required by the surgeon. I was approved surprisingly fast and I am scheduled to be banded on October 17th. I started my pre-op diet yesterday and the hardest part was the headache that I got from the caffeine withdrawal. I am really excited, don't care who knows I am having the surgery and I am keeping only good thoughts about the outcome. I have a few people who say negative things and I have to let it go and get on with things because this is about me and not them and it is my decision, which I didn't make lightly.

Good luck to everyone!!

Debora

Ok so I need to vent and maybe some support. I am at work today and overall it has been a good day, then at 4:15, the surgeons office calls me. They tell me that I need to go to an ENT.

Backstory: i have had a weird tongue allergy since I was a child, I can't eat anything citrusy without my tounge swelling a bit and being very sore. This includes fruits, walnuts, sprite, some alchoc beverages, etc. This runs in my family, my dad has it as does one of his sisters.

Return to the call: they say that I need to go see an ENT so be can determine how severe my allergies are and if it will make my throat close off or not. I understand why they want this, but I have had this all my life a d nothing life threading has ever come out of it. My surgery is in 1 week and I was lucky that I was able to get in to see one tomorrow. However if they want to do food testing on me my surgery could be postponed. I M just frustrated. Thanks for letting me vent!!

Back in 1996 I had to have gall-bladder surgery and was talking with the anesthesiologist; he asked me about allergies and I told him I only had an allergy to eggs and he said it was important because some anesthesia they use is made from eggs so this can be very important. They want to make sure you are safe. I know it is frustrating and disappointing but it will happen. Good luck to you!

Debora

Pre-op testing is 10/6 for surgery on 10/12! I'm on my way. So excited. On day 7 of two week liquid diet. Not loving this part, but if it helps to prepare me for banding and post-op, then I'll hang in there. Any other Oct 12th bandsters out there?

I am new to the website and the discussion board here.

My surgery date is 10.14.11

All I have left is my pre-op class & then the final meeting with the surgeon.

I am very excited to final begin my lifestyle change, I started my 14 day pre surgery diet. The first 2 days were rough but today is day 4 and its not that bad!

Can anyone recommend a Protein shake that you all like so I can switch to a shake instead of eating Shrimp & carrots for Breakfast.

TY

Sure ! MUSCLE MILK LIGHT... Lots of flavors , and very good. I use chocolate Milk in place of the chocolate. It tastes better.

Go to allStarHealth.com and enter Muscle Milk LIght. Almost everything under $19.oo they ship when they are paid...your entire order, no matter how much is $5.95...

That's a deal, and that's where I buy my stuff from.

Also

Iveydeals on ebay, look that name up. I also buy from her, she has some great prices on different things all the time. Stock is always being updated or changing.

Tell her Shirley mentioned her.

I drink the high protien Boost. The chocolate is the better of their flavors. You can taste the Vitamins and minerals in the vanilla. I've had strawberry in Ensure and it isn't too bad either.

Hi All!

Just checking in! I have been on the pre-op diet for 6 days now and it is much easier than I anticipated. I haven't been hungry and I have lost 7 lbs. so far. I am so ready for this that I think I have just wrapped my head around it. I feel like I am already looking at food so differently. It is exciting to see everyone's surgery dates and surgery successes. I hope mine will be as smooth. Sometimes all you hear is the bad so I am excited to hear some positive things about the surgery! Good Luck All! To healthier bodies! 8 days and counting ~until surgery!

I'm Banded!! Still in the hospital from Tuesday morning I had to ask for pain meds twice. So far my pain level is about a 4 now. My surgeon knew i had one small hiatal hernia but he discovered a belly button hernia as well and repaired that too. I have stay at least thru this evening they have to check the band placement later this morning and after that see if I can hold down a liquid meal.

I have only two issues. My mouth is like a desert. All I can do is swab it out with this green swab stick. I can't have ice chips or nothing. The other is the roomate who snores like crazy!' she talks loudly in her sleep & she whines constantly about everything the nurses fondue her. If I have to stay another night ll ask for another room. My stomach area is a little tender. I was feeling it and said to the nurse where are my bandages. She showed me! They are called Derma Blend it's thin covering that will dissolve!! I've moved from my bed to this huge comfy recliner at 4 am. It's much better than lying in the bed. Im feeling the gas issues but it's nike coming out yet. The nurse walked me down the hallway before i went to bed last night. Hopefully this morning I can take another stroll to help my digestive system move. I'm not hungry yet. My big desire is to swallow some Water to wet my mouth !! Thank you all for support and a place for updates. Who's next ? ;-)

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
