Has anyone been unable to do just liquids in week 1?

Recommended Posts

Hi. I am 2 weeks post op and I could NOT do the post op diet. I tried SO HARD and was starving!! I have read everything I could and tried everything I could and just couldnt do it. I wanted to kill everyone around me and I was so depressed so I just started moving forward in what I could eat earlier than I should have and started feeling so much better. I am not having any discomfort or pain. I am able to eat more than 2-4 ounces so I will talk to my doctor about that but other than that I am good. I do agree with everyone that says you need to be careful but I think you should be able to listen to your body and be ok. I wish you the best and thanks so much for your honesty. I have been struggling and feeling completely alone.

hey mishell! i am SO happy to see that someone else posted about this topic...I just did too!!!! I was banded 7/21/11 and followed the full liquids for a week - my diet stages are first week all liquids, second week full liquids, meaning you can include yogurt and applesauce, the third week, baby food, the fourth week, SOFT foods, and finally week five regular foods. I began "testing" tiny amounts of food at the end of the first week, just because I was starving. I know that any food in any amount will go down because I haven't had an adjustment yet. I also realize that I'm setting myself up to fail if I don't restrict myself. But because I don't feel that restriction through my band, I'm resorting to old habit.

I'm not downing loads of food, i'm testing little bitty amounds here and there. So I understand what you are going through. I cannot wait to have an adjustment so that I can finally feel some restriction.

Good luck to you!!

I had to do 4 weeks of liquids post op. 2 weeks clear followed by 2 weeks full. I honestly had no problem with it. The worst thing about it was the horrible taste in my mouth and the bad breath that I'm sure accompanied it.

Yes we have all had the hungers after surgery I am not a doctor, however if you are suppose to be on clear liguids you want to stick to the doctor instructions, You need to heal and the staples and the band need time to adjust. You do not want to hinder the healing process - drink extra Clear Liquids and lots of Water or crystal lite - Kool aid has some great sugar free flavor drinks as well - Jello is good Good luck

Hello all, I am almost one week post-op, and have been "cheating" by eating pea-sized pieces of Peanut Butter, teaspoons of cottage cheese, sugarfree pudding, applesause, and Tomato Soup in teaspoon-like servings. I have been so hungry, and I hope I;m not doing any damage by doing this, but I just can't get through with liquids alone. I eat these things a few times a day, not continually. I have lost 7 pounds since surgery. I think my doctor would kill me if she knew. Has anyone had a similar post-op experience?

Hi there! I'm on a liquid diet for the first 3 weeks following surgery, then i can go to Soups and things after 3 weeks, then to "regular" foods after another 3 weeks. I was banded on 8/2/11 (just a few days ago) and I'm starving!!! I have been drinking 2 ounces of Protein Drink every single hour I'm awake and just feel so hungry! I am going to call my doctor 1 week post-op to see if i can add in some soups before my first fill on Aug. 23rd. I can't stand the way my stomach is growling while I'm following the plan perfectly.

Banded on 7/26.

Down 25 lb plus 10 prior to surgery on my own. No pre-op liquid diet required

Total 35

I am on phase II full liquids for another week. I have been on this post-op. I have homemade broth [all chicken, veg get strained until it is only liquid]. I do not use can Soups, too much sodium. I drink Water, zero calorie lifewater, flavored, crystal light, sugar-free ice pops, Protein shakes with Water or skim milk twice a day depending on the amt of Protein per gram. It can get boring but I am doing fine with it. I have been around food in the past week from events and I stick to my guns. I don't need to be tasting bits and pieces of food. I did not subject myself to this surgery to cheat myself and end up in the hospital. My doctor is very strict and I like that because it keeps me on my toes; plus I am committed to this new lifestyle. A week from this Monday, I start puree, mushy foods so I am really looking forward to the change.

Good luck to all.

I was banded exactly a week ago and have been struggling with knowing how much to eat. I'm on full liquids now and am only eating the things on the list but I'm pretty sure I'm eating more than I should be even though I don't feel "full" when I stop just satisfied. I'm having an incredibly hard time with all of this and to be completely honest have had more days of crying and regretting my decision and just wanting to be able to go eat a normal meal than I have of being happy (even though I've lost 13 lbs). For me, its been extremely rough.

I'm sorry you were having a hard time with it! :( Did it get any better for you? I would just eat the portions that they say too. I just started mushies last night and I ate 4oz of chicken for dinner and stopped. You are right that you don't feel "full". I don't think we will ever feel "full" again and thinking about that kind of stinks because to me that feeling was pretty awesome.

Try and make your meals "normal". What would you normally eat? Like last night on my plate was the chicken, broccoli and there was potatoes on the table. I ate the chicken and was satisfied so I didn't get to the other items. Even though I would have liked to sample the potatoes (yum!) I knew I really didn't have room. Just make sure you get your Protein in and if you have space then go ahead and eat the veggies and if you want some sort of starch.

I hope you are feeling better about everything! I'm Justine if you ever want to vent!

Phew I am finally feeling better thank you! The first week and a half was really rough for me but things have definitely gone up from there! I'm on the pureed food stage now and have heard a few good recipes I'm going to try to make it seem like I'm eating "normally" (I just can't do baby food...i just can't do it lol)

I definitely hear you on the baby food!!! I never was told i had to puree anything. they said chicken was fine as long as it was soft but no breads, red meat, fresh fruit or hard veggies. everything had to be soft.

@karey, I'm only 5 days post op and I can't do the liquids either. I'm not one to cheat, but my body couldn't handle just liquids. I'm being sensible with my choices, but feel guilty that I'm not able to follow drs orders. I just want to cry!!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
