Post Op Lap Band Support

Yesterday I went to my post op lap band support and learned a few things. Most of us in the class were 2 weeks + a couple of days post op, so we were in the space place. They said we should stop using the shakes as much and only use them to get in enough protein. I added a scoop to my slimfast yesterday, and it tasted like a thick shake, it was yummy!   I got a good laugh when I asked when the steri-strips would fall off because I was the only one with them still on! 16 days post op and they were still stuck on me! They said I could have taken them off 10 days ago! I was amazed when I showered...I was all healed! LOL!   I also learned that too much Crystal Light can make you feel bloated and gassy, which is probably why I haven't been feeling that great this week. It's the chemicals and the body has to process them differently. I was tired of water, and I just kept drinking lemonade and iced tea from Crystal Light. I'm giving myself a break and going back to water.   I had a back to school party for my kids and their friends last night, and several people commented that I had lost weight! I'm glad that it's noticable, the only thing I notice is that my shorts are falling off me! I finally broke out my bike and went for a ride with the kids yesterday. I did okay, but it hurt a little where the port is, so I think I'll stick to walking until I'm fully healed! No need to push it, I'm doing great and losing every couple of days! :scared2: I love this lap band! I finally feel in control and don't have cravings!

It's easy to forget

Wow! how soon we forget how much to eat. I received my second fill on August 10th and it kicked in 2 weeks later, I was eating way to much and to fast before the fill but was still losing around a pound a week...I was still eating a good amount but was feeling so gassy and bloated after meals and would burp for hours:eek:. I went to the forum to get some insight and many of you said if you are feeling this way you have eaten to much and to fast, I then started listening to my body again because I was ignoring the signals... at first I was a little mad:mad2: because I was eating refried beans and queso and could only eat 3oz and it was so good but I was getting full after one little burp I knew I should stop:ohmy:. With all of that being said I am back on track with portion sizes and know how important it is to keep getting fills so it will keep us in check.:scared2: I LOVE MY BAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hungry in the Afternoon!

Ok, I need HELP! I am 9 weeks out (banded June 21st). I had my first fill July 21st at 3.8cc's and I'm scheduled for my second fill September 15th and the problem is...I'm hungry!!! I get hungry about 2-3 PM everyday. I do really well in the morning (may be due to the band being tighter in the morning and the fact that I have never been a heavy eater in the morning).   Sample Menu   I wake up and drink a cup of hot tea (with teaspoon of skim milk and splenda)   Breakfast: I typically eat a Greek yogurt w/ honey or I make a protein shake with skim milk and maybe fresh fruit).   Snack: hummus & veggies, Special K cracker and a laughing cow, or a protein bar.   Lunch: Spinach or romaine salad with grilled chicken, feta cheese, almonds, or walnuts and dressing (I eat the 2tbsp serving size of regular, taste better)   Snack: this is where I need help, cheese & crackers, protein shake, yogurt, etc doesn:t seem to keep me full) I drink water intermittingly. :scared2: Any suggestions to changes in my diet to help keep me full longer? Any good high protein snack ideas? I don't like eggs:thumbdown: I guess "meat" snack could be good, but not good for when on the go. Thanks!

Post surgery thoughts

Well its day 3 I won't say its been easy but it hasn't been all that bad either. But all this down time has had me thinking. The first thing that has struck me on this journey is how many of us say things like "we have done this to us" or use the word "elective" I don't know about that to me there was nothing elective about this. High B/P, high cholesterol and a borderline ekg are all warning signs that my weight is killing me. If a doctor told me oh you have this tumor it could kill you in 10-20 years and will cause you health issues What do you want to do about it?" What do I need the roof to fall on my head? I have tried and I exercise but it isn't working so now it is time to do something before it is too late. I may be a bit miserable today but tomorrow I will feel a little better and the next day even better. And in a few weeks I will feel normal. Someone commented on my blog that we are brave for doing this , Katy is right we are!

Nutritionist

I went today for a visit with my new nutritionist and I love her. She is very friendly and truly listened to me. She gave me some great recipe ideas and once we have tried one or two and like them, I will post them here so we can all share.   I was concerned that I wasn't doing what I should be doing, but she said I am doing great! I am excited that I don't have to do the protein shakes anymore. I truly don't like them. I have been eating enough proteins and I am still losing.   I told her I was concerned that if and when I get a fill, I won't be able to get in enough food in. She said I would probably end up cutting back on the veggies or fruit, but that as long as I continue eating my protein first, I won't need the shakes or protein bars.   I know a lot of you here at this site still eat bread or carbs, but I don't, My doctor does not want me, or his other patients, to eat them because according to him, if you don't eat carbs, your body fuels on your fat. If you eat carbs, the body fuels on the carbs and leaves the fat. So even though I love the bread and pasta, I am doing without. In a year when he says I can have them in small portions, I'll see if I want them then.   I weighed in at her office and then again tonight at the gym. I am down to 224.6. I feel so good. I wish everyone reading my blog feels as good as I do.:scared2:   Have a great weekend everyone.

What a bumpy road

So, I had my surgery on August 17 and it's been hard. The pain was bad and still is sometimes esp. at night. This is certaily not how I pictured this going down. Even though the pain has gone down considerably, that damn stitch on my left side had been everything but good. It's so tight that I"m still having trouble walking much less even walking straight. I walk hunched over because the stitch begins to hurt almost immediately. My left side is still sunken in and I'm begining to think that's how it's going to stay. I've become good friends with my painkillers because of this. I had my follow-up appt this week. After showering, getting dressed (with help of course) I finally made it to my sister's car only for her to tell me that the car's battery had died while waiting for me. Suffice to say, I unstuffed myself from her car, grabbed a hold of my boyfriend and went back upstairs. I would've died if I would've taken public transportation. I had to rescedule my appt for this coming Wednesday. I hope they can tell me something about this stitch problem and my sunken belly. I'm beginning to think that maybe there is something wrong with me. Before the operation, I was already planning amd researching everything from how I would eat to all the types of exercise I would do. My goal is to lose those first hundred pounds in a year's time. Most likely I'm pushing myself; it's only been a week and a half. But when I left the hospital, all the other ladies were already walking just fine.. even using the bathroom with no problems. It's like I'm a slow starter which is frustrating because I want so bad to get on track already. I want to be able to post any changes I've had so far. Lets be honest... I'd like to be one of those people who says they lost 20lbs in the first month. I'm still swollen and then to top it all off, my "friend's" about to come down for a visit, so add bloated to that list. Ugh! I'm frustrated and hurting. :huh0:

One step closer!

Well here's the short version...   Endoscope/ gallbladder ultrasound next wed at 11am (please, please pray that my gall bladder is okay and will not have to be removed!!!!!!!! please, please, please)   Pap on the 13th   Group mtg with hubby on the 21st   Need to lose 15 lb pre-op, low fat diet to shrink liver before surgery.   Surgery times are being scheduled out end of Sept/ beginning of Oct by the doctor.     Here is MAJOR part!!! I need you to pray!!! My insurance is not approving sleeves at this time due to some paperwork not filed correctly by the hospital on a previous patient. So it has been 2-3 wks and the doctor is on hold with this type of surgery, until the hospital fixes their paperwork. No clue when this can be. It could be Monday or 3 months from now?!?!?!

Run/walk with purpose for 15 minutes
Here is what I did: Got up late, sat around drinking coffee too long. Rode my bike to the park 1.59 miles 30 push ups (without stopping!) 30 sit ups (20 without stopping) 30 squats (20 without stopping) 30 body rows (5 at a time:mad:) 12 min run .98 miles (I had to get back home to get ready for work) Rode my bike home.   Only 9 days left in my cross training I will finish just in time to do this: http://www.runthejailbreak.com/ its on my 41st birthday.

Not Happy

Went to my first nutritionist thing today. not very happy nor positive now. She told me that the doctor wants ppl to be at a bmi of 50 before he does the operation. I would have to lose 100lbs to get to that. I feel that if i can lose 100lbs in 6 months then why the heck do i need the surgery???? Not happy very depressed. Not sure what to do. Starve myself?? Drink 2 protein shakes then have a small dinner??? So now im down. Was very happy to go to my fist appointment but that was short lived. Thinking about looking for a different doctor. Not sure what to do . JUst depressed and crying like a baby . I just want this so bad but hell 100lbs.. might as well not get the freaking surgery dang!!!!!

I am going to be born on September 20th

:scared2: My lapband is scheduled for September 20th and I am ready for my life to begin. I am 42 and want to feel alive again. It is difficult living life the way I have been and I am ready for change. I am going to start shopping for all my liquids I will need for my pre-diet. It's hard for people that are thin to understand the situation I am in. They just think..diet and exercise and the weight will come right off. Been there, done that....it's not working for me. This is the best choice for ME to get healthy and start living. I don't care what people think, it's my life and I'm going for it!!! I'm glad I can just blog here and have lots of people who understand my situation. Peace:biggrin:

Getting ready

Yesterday I went to the hospital for my pre-admission tests-bloodwork and EKG, I felt good after talking to the anestesiologist. I have been a little apprehensive about that since I have COPD. She reassured me that they are used to patients with breathing problems and that they would be taking extra care. I only have 2 more days to work, tonight and Monday. Tuesday I will get all my after surgery meds and do the all evening in the bathroom thing LOL!And then!! Wednesday is the big day.I have been going through my clothes. I have plenty of things to wear for the next size down. I put all my 3X winter clothes in the bag for Goodwill. Goodbye forever!:huh0:

First fill...Where did it go?

I went for my first fill yesterday & I don't feel any different. My Dr. uses Fluoroscopy so they could see how much saline I needed. I drank & they were happy that liquid was finally slowing down. They put in 5cc & said that is a lot for first time fill. Well here's my question...How come I'm still starving? I have to stay on liquids for 48 hrs. in case of swelling. I always follow my Dr.'s advice because he's done a lot of these, but I think I'm not falling in the normal category. Has anyone had a fill this big & still been hungry?...I'm holding on to every bit of will power I possess but 4 weeks is a long time to be so hungry... On the lighter side I've lost 20 lbs.:scared2: Any advice would be welcome!

Stuck like glue

OMG!! Last night was excruciating. I went in for a fill on Monday. I only got .5cc, so no biggie. I am up to 5cc now. Everything was fine. I was a little tight on and off during the day. Each night at dinner my food would get a little stuck. Each day it seemed to get worse. Wednesday night I was eating dinner and it got stuck. Really stuck! I was at work at the time which made this even worse. I walked around hoping gravity would help but no, nothing helped. I started sliming and well it had to come up. I felt better. Last night was the worst ever! I took one bite of a bean burrito and it was more bean than tortilla. It got stuck and it was painful. The sliming started and I expelled it. I call it expelling becuase it's not really throwing up. It comes from my throat not my stomach. Anyway, I was still stuck. Still sliming. Still expelling. Every 10-15 minutes from 8:30 until 2am. Completely stuck until 2am when it eased up. I called my doctor's office today and they said that once you get stuck your esophagus spasms. Drinking hot liquid, as hot as you can stand it, will relax your esophagus. Drinking cold or even room temperature liquids causes your esophagus to spasm. Good to know. I am to drink hot liquids right before eating to relax my esophagus to see if this helps my situation, if not then I have to come in and get some liquid taken out. No one is in my doctor's office that can take out fluid toda. They are in the other office which is too far away(as in another city) so I am trying this little trick until at least Monday. Wish me luck. Still all in all, I don't regret it. This is the 1st real problem I have had. I am sure there will be others but I wouldn't trade this for anything. The band is the best decision I ever made. I am down 53 lbs. The sliming sucks but this too shall pass.

Recipe Of The Day! Potato And Fish Stew

My mother has been making this soup for several years now. Stews for me are comfort foods and every time I makes this dish it reminds of my childhood. It is incredibly easy to make, given how tasty and how low in calories it is. Works well with white fish, I've used cod, tilapia, sole with good results. I also use clam juice some times, mmmmm... tasty. ENJOY!   Makes 6 servings Active Time: 15 minutes Total Time: 45 minutes   253 Calories Per Serving   CHECK OUT MY BLOG FOR MORE INFO ON THIS RECIPE AND SO MANY MORE:thumbup: http://life-after-lap-band.blogspot.com/

My doctor held out on stage 2 recipes!!

I've been on stage 2 for almost 5 days now and was just about to ask the doc to advance me to stage 3. My doctor's food list has grits, oatmeal, mashed potatoes, protein shakes and clear liquids.... There's no mention of cream of broccoli soup, egg salad, refried beans with ground chicken (pureed), chili, etc.... I think they purposely left those off the menu so that ppl wouldn't over eat. But, I chose lowfat, dieters cream soup and I'm only eating 400-600 calories a day. I googled stage 2 LAP-BAND®® recipes and I can't wait to try them!! I also just discovered that when your calorie consumption is too low, you don't lose weight...hence the reason I've only lost 4 pounds since surgery (9 days ago). Normally, I would've lost more by now.... So, I'm gonna up the calories to 700-900 a day!! Woo hoo, can't wait to eat more and add variety:tongue_smilie:

3 Weeks Out

I know it's been a few weeks since I posted. I have just recently moved AND had an out of town visitor for a week so little to no time to come online. I am going to be 3 weeks out tomorrow. I saw my doc 1 week post op and he gave me the go ahead for mushies. About a week after that I moved myself to soft regular foods (chewing thourghly) and now am on to regular food. I haven't had any problems. The "suggested" diet was just way too slow for me. I kind of feel guilty about moving forward to quickly, but I chew my food very well, and use my teeth as a blender so everything is "pureed" before going down (gross, sorry). I have not had any problems, everything goes down really smoothly.   I have been working out for an hour about 4 times a week(treadmill and elliptical) and feel fabulous. I am really happy with my weight loss, about 20 lbs so far and my clothes are feeling looser.   Waiting to get my 1st fill next week though, and boy do I need it! I feel that if I let myself go, I would be able to eat just like I used to at this point. I have zero restriction, which I know won't come until the first fill. I am in a weird point right now. I am on to regular foods, with no restriction. What does that mean? Yeah...weight gain. At one point I gained about 3 pounds. That really freaked me out. But I was able to curb my eating and get it back off. But it was a reality check. I need a fill. That is what this whole LAP-BAND® thing is all about right? Being able to limit what we can consume.

2 weeks post op today

Today i am 2 weeks post op.... im feeling good.... lost alot of weight/ fluid.... before my liver shrinking diet i was 314. After LSD 299.... and now i am 273:smile2:. I know the weight drops off fast at first but im just scared of failure. Im really trying not to think negative but all the temptations around me is gonna make this journey so HARD! Especially, when i am the only OBESE person in my immediate family. But imma be strong and hold on cause i didnt come this far to give up.   Now since all the swelling is mostly gone, i feel that my band is lose. I dont know if im saying that correctly, but i feel hungry within 2 hours after i have eaten. I drink water all the time trying to fill up. But shortly after the hunger comes back. They tell u not to snack.... but what about fresh fruit or veggies? I go to the doctor again next week and i would love it if they would tighten this band up a lil. But i know its too early. :scared2::sleep:

Colts, baby!

I'm sitting here blogging and watching Colts preseason football. My life is SWEET! The only thing that would make it better would be a regular season game. :scared2: I LOVE football!!   Speaking of the Colts, I bought our plane tickets to Indy today. They went down almost $100 so I jumped on it. I also reserved the hotel so we are ready to go! It is hard to believe that I have a trip to Louisville, a visit from the parents, & a trip to New Orleans before that. Plus I trip to North Carolina to see my godson a couple weeks after that. Whew! Exhausting...but again, how awesome!?   Jazzercise was a good workout tonight. I used 8 pound weights tonight instead of 10. They felt pretty light which is a good sign. I had a little twinge in my back today and I wanted to baby it. But I still felt that I got in great strength training.   Tomorrow night we are going to a Bowling for Soup concert. They are my favorite band and I LOVE seeing them. I'm excited!   Have a great Friday everyone! I will be rocking out!

Great Support

Thank you all for your responses to my blogs. I truly get inspired by all of you.   I made a promise to myself 3 years ago when I decided to look into weight loss surgery that if I was fortunate to have it, I would do ANYTHING I had to do to keep on track. I know too many people who have had gastric bypass or lapband surgery and didn't keep up their end of the bargain by keeping on track and doing what they needed to do, so they gained all their weight back. They thought I'll have the surgery and the rest will take care of itself. Well, that isn't the case. You have to take care of the rest.   Tomorrow I have a 9:00am appointment with a new dietician. My last one was a very nice young lady, but she didn't "get me" and was not giving me the information I needed. She would ask if I liked something like Greek yogurt or cottage cheese and I said no. So when she wrote out a suggested diet plan, she put both cottage cheese and Greek yogurt on it. That got me a little bit upset, so I told my doctor I wanted to switch and they gave me an appointment with a new person.   I am curiousn to know if I am doing the right thing eating the way I do. Yes, I am consistently losing weight and the scale is going in the right direction, but I want to make sure my intake is right. Could I lose more faster? I don't know, but I feel great, so I hope I am doing what I am suppose to do. As you all know, I don't want to do protein shakes - but I will if I have to.   I can't believe I am in my 9th week since surgery. The time has gone by so quickly. My first fill is scheduled for 9/1, so we will see how it goes.   Well, I hope you all have a great evening.
