God Bless:thumbup:

I had mine done this past thursday and feel its the best thing I ever could do for my self. I too have to sleep on my back as I ususally sleep on my side but will have to wait till it feels right. Hopefully pretty soon. Hang in there and good luck. Sean

Had my surgery 7-2-09 also. Not much pain, just a little sore muscle. Came home a day early and am busy burping and listening to the air bounce around my insides.

I am not hungry and I like that.

Don't forget to stay hydrated.

Based on what I have seen on this site, what you can have during your pre-op varies wildly from dr to dr. I have been on my pre-op diet for 10 days now. I am supposed to have 3 shakes a day (I can't ever seem to get that 3rd one in) and 2 meals of 2 cups green salad and 3 oz Protein. Then I can have SF popsicles and Jello and all the cucumbers & a few other veggies I want. I have modified it a little and had some cooked veggies instead of salad sometimes and only 2 shakes and I have not been hungry unless I forgot to eat. I have lost 10 pounds already! I am so excited! Surgery in 3 days!:smile2:

Hi All!

I'm a July Bandster from a year ago. My 1 year bandiversary was July 2nd and it's been an amazing year. As you can see, I've lost 82.5 pounds thus far and consider this the very best thing I have done for myself. No, it hasn't always been easy. For 10 days following surgery I wasn't able to sleep well because I sleep on my tummy and was sore. I remember calling my doctor asking if I was ever going to be able to sleep well again and feel "normal". He assured me that I would and of course he was right. On day 10 post-op, I was able to sleep on my tummy instead of tossing in bed or sitting up in a chair. The gas pain came about 2 weeks post-op but that passed quickly as well with the help of Gas-X every few hours. I DO remember how difficult it was to stay on the liquids the few weeks and then the mushie stage, but you'll be able to eat normal food eventually and that's what I kept in my head going through that tough time. I was also very nervous because I had a blood clot 5 years prior to my surgery and wondered if I would possibly get another one. Thank God I didn't have any problems. I had to self inject an anti-clotting medication (can't remember the name) for about a week and everything was fine. I can't believe a year has passed and I'm feeling great. I just wanted to write this to encourage all you up coming bandsters and let you know that there will probably be some rough Patches but they will pass and you'll be so happy with the results. Good luck to you all! :smile2:

Hi Kathy.... We both are scheduled for the 21st...Isn't it exciting. My surgeon doesn't have us do the 2wk liquid presurgery diet. I am on a lowfat diet 40-50grams fat per day. After surgery I will be on Full liquids for 2 wks. I wish you the best....

Hi Krnpick,

I was just curious as to how many carbs/protein your doctor has you on? I am day 8 of my liquid diet and except for the first day of having a headache, I have felt okay. My doctor recommends no less than 130 to 150 carbs per day and 50 to 60 grams of protein. I was just curious.

I hope it gets better for you. It is definitely hard!

Good luck to you, hon.

Actually they didn't really give me numbers, they just told me to have 2 Protein Shakes in 4 oz incraments/ each 4 oz should have 10 grams of Protein Then I can have 16 oz of juice, milk, or gateraide. Then Water, broth, popsicles, Jello, all that sugar free crap. That's it!:smile2:

July 7th appears to be a popular day. Lucky number 7 perhaps? LOL I'm supposed to be the first one of the day at an outpatient surgical center. I'm hoping to be up and walkin' around and out by noon. I'm nervous and excited and just ready for it all to be over with so that the healing can begin. I'm sooo looking forward to being able to eat again. This liquid diet has been tough for me and I have cheated a couple of times, but still had lost 7lbs.

Good luck to everyone! I wish you a complication free surgery and a speedy recovery!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
