First Fill Experiences For The Mayo BANDitos

Recommended Posts

Hey Mac, when is your next fill scheduled? Dr. Chua told me 3 - 4 months so my next appt isn't until September?

Rosie,

Dr. Chua told me to come in next month for a fill so I go in on July 13th for the next one. I'm sure glad I am because I can't believe how hungry I am and while I'm trying to diet, the weight isn't really coming off right now.

Thanks! I would have to say that it is probably excersize. I've been walking about 2 miles a day. 1 mile at lunch and 1 mile after work. That combined with eating enough calories to keep my metabolism going.

I've been sitting on my butt for about 8 years so... moving is probably the biggest change I've made combined with my new tool.

Odd.... I wonder why he told me 3 - 4 months. I guess if I start getting too hungry I'll call him. It may be because I can't drink the Protein shakes. I told him that I've been eating my Protein, since I'm allergic to the whey Protein. One of my friends that had surgery a week after me has her first fill tomorrow with him, I'll ask her what he is having her do.

David,

Did you have an xray first or you did it without the xray.

I'm due for my first fill on 6/26. He's only putting in 1-2CC's. I have a 10CC band- I'm almost positive. And the way his assistant explained it ever so gently, you'll be eating real food by then, and then we're gonna throw a monkey wrench in your program:glare:. Good luck everyone!

OMG exactly!!!! I hate that, I'll be exactly 5 weeks out, just getting used to soft foods/normal foods and they do a fill. I mean fair enough hardly anyone has restriction after the first fill but come one!!! Lol

I had my first fill yesterday, and boy was I surprised! I thought all along I had no restriction. HA! The surgeon measured, and I had 5 cc's in me the whole time!! And I've been so hungry this whole time!! Anyhow, he only put in 1 cc, and said he will only put in 1 or 1.5 cc each time. I'm sitting here one day later, and I'm already hungry 2 1/2 hours after having a 12 oz. Protein shake. Oh, and I have to wait another 6 weeks before I go for my second fill. Boo.

But, on the bright side, the needle stick was very simple! :tt2:

I get my first fill on June 23rd. My Dr. is very aggressive, I guess??? The PA told me that she will start with about 5cc and fill .5 every 2 weeks. She also told me that I have a 10cc standard band. I can't wait because I am sooo hungry. I am trying to keep my calories between 1000-1200 and excersice 45 min. per day.

Hi everyone,

I won't be banded until July 20th either. I don't have any restriction, but I'm not usually hungry either except right before meal times. I do get hungry around 3:30 every day, but have a Protein shake, EAS Myoplex Lite, chocolate and that keeps me going until dinner. I'm able to eat fish now, so I am really taking advantage of that.

After dinner, I get hungry about an hour or so later, so I have sugar free, 1% fat chocolate pudding with fat free whipped cream and that holds me for the rest of the day. Also, with all of the Water we have to drink, I don't have time to eat anything else. GB

I'm reporting back after 3 days. I must say, just getting 1 cc has actually made a difference!, much to my surprise!:) I do feel more restriction and cannot eat as much. And I suddenly dropped 4 lbs. I think that was just a freaky Water weight coincidence, but hey, I'll take it however I can get it! :hurray: So, don't worry if the doctor only puts in a small amount. It really does make a difference.

I got my first fill today! 3.5 cc's total. He tried 4.5 and it was way too much, so he backed it down to 4 and it was still too much. 3.5 was perfect. He did it via x-ray, so I got to see the liquid as it got "stuck" and then when he took it down to 3.5 I saw it flow through the band. It was pretty cool, actually.

I was pretty nervous, but now I know not to be! The feeling when it got "stuck" was terrible, I was shocked at that.

My surgeon is letting me decide when to get the next one, but it will be no sooner than 3 to 4 weeks out. He also said it would take about 2 weeks to tell if I have restriction. So far I don't feel any different, but I'm on liquids until lunch time tomorrow.

Yay, I feel so much like a grown up bander now!!! :bored:

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
