I haven't heard of an attempt on Obama - But I will say that I have no doubt (I say regretably) that there will be one if he is elected.

In my lifetime, Kennedy was assinated (though I was young), Reagen had a major attempt on his life (a very close call) Ford had a couple of attempts (not so near close calls), and every president has had threats.

Obama has not only the typical presidential nutcases, but the nut case racists, but also the nut case internet conspiracy throrists who are popping up. Saddly, I fear he will have a very rough time as president, and there will be attempts.

As with any world leader, it will be a time of great pain for the country if someone were to succeed. But I am sure that, as with Kennedy, as with Lincoln, as with others who have died in office, we will survive and recover from the pain.

I think that assassination attempts might be likely. Palin and McCain are stirring up the crazies in their campaign by implying that Obama has terrorist/Islam ties or that he is in some way unAmerican. It is disgusting.

By the way, Watcher, you are right: you sure cannot spell. But you sure do launch some very interesting threads. Thank you, sez Green.

Im curious what your perspective is that brings you to that conclusion

Sadly, there has been a tradition of assassinations and assassination attempts of public and controversial figures in your country. There is also a vivid tradition of racism in certain parts of the States. There are many folks who are foolish enough to believe that the colour of Obama's skin and the fact that his middle name is Hussein are defining factors of his "wrongness" as a presidential candidate. The colour of his skin and his middle name are not accomplishments but simply part of what the man came equipped with at birth.

What any individual should be judged on is his own accomplishments and Obama's, and those of his wife, are impressive. Nevertheless, there are nutbars who are present at the McCain/Palin rallies who yell out truly odious idiocies about Obama; they call this man a "traitor." This level of hatred, one which would deny the basic facts of Obama's life, does not bode well, in my opinion. In my opinion, Obama is being held to a different, and higher standard than that applied to Palin and McCain. This difference arises from racism, I think. It is unlikely that these crazies will go away once Obama becomes President. He will need to have excellent security in place.

Well said. We need to judge by his philosophies as evidenced by his actions, not his name or his color.

I don't think calling him "traitor" has anything to do with racism. I think it has more to do with his known associations with terrorists and radicals.

The "terrorist" was William Ayres... Yes, he did acts of terrorism, as did many during the vietnam era. A sad but true fact. He is now a distuingished professor. Another true fact. His association goes as far as being on a board of directors with him. (As I have sat on several boards - often times with people who I have no outside association with). I sware, I wish people would quite acting as though Obama were sitting next to him making bombs... geez

The "Radical' was Rev. Jeremiah Wright. And he is so radical that he, while preaching God, actually expects that America would look at what it does instead of expecting that God will bless us just because we're americans. How radical is that. I may not like the way that Rev. Wright says things, but if you really think about it, he makes some great points. (If a white, middle class man in Texas who is proud to be in America, and proud to have served his country in the US Navy, even if it was in the peace time can agree with such radicalism).

And just so we can be clear, if you go to a United Methodist church, a Lutheran church, a Disciples of Christ church, an Episcopal church, or the Catholic church in the United States, then your pastor is probably a radical, since in seminary, the most likely studied the works of James Cone, the Liberation Theologian that had such an influence on Jeremiah Wright. As a professor at Union Theological Seminary (A United Methodist seminary), his books are widely studied. After all, it is a well accepted theolgoical approach.

Wow. You refuse to believe anything except left-wing propaganda and poor explanations for the truth, don't you?

Ridiculous. Just because someone doesn't like Obama doesn't make them a racist.

He was more than someone he just sat on a board with. And Ayres said, on 9/11/01, that he wished as a terrorist that he had gone further. Ayres isn't the only one either. I don't have time right now to go into it but I will try to pop back in later and give some more details.

Look, people have reasonable questions about Obama's multiple associations with people of questionable affiliation. Just because he's black doesn't mean we should overlook these associations. And just because people question him doesn't mean they're racist.

One more thing -- last night I was listing to someone (can't remember who) who said something along the lines of: if McCain launched his national political career from the home of someone who had bombed an abortion clinic -- but it was 30 years ago -- what do you think would happen to his chances at the Presidency?

:tt1: I am a little confused. I thought this was a Lap Band Surgery and Lap Band Discussion Forum? I always look forward to reading the "New Post's" on this forum. I like to hear the progress we have all made on our way to a new and healthier life. I like to hear new ideas on recipes or foods that we can try. Surely there is another FORUM to discuss Politics? I am just as concerned as the next person is on regards to "Who will our next President be". But right or wrong, just MY opinion, This Lap Band Forum is not the place.

I hope everyone just banded or getting banded this week do well and have a speedy recovery.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
