Grazing, is this normal?

Hello everyone, I'm 14 months post op (sleeve) and have surpassed my weight loss goal. I've noticed over the past few months that I find myself constantly eating and snacking. Now this has not affected my weight loss but it does make me worry if my grazing brings a potential to gain it all back. I snack on a variety of things but mainly natural nut trailmix with raisins or cranberries. Sometimes the occasional bag of popcorn, fruit, or Jerky. Part of me thinks its a mental thing in which I have a need to be constantly chewing, but idk 🤷‍♂️.

Has anyone else experienced this or is experiencing this?

im 4+ years post op.

I've been grazing since the beginning and still do.

I think it matters more how many total calories you consume than how many times you eat.

so long as the higher frequency of eating times does not result in more calories overall (for your given situation), you should find it makes no difference.

I graze all day too. Since the beginning. Like @Ms.SSS said it's the total calories at the end of the day. For example, today I had 3 that's it dark chocolate truffles, later I had 100g watermelon, an hour or so later I had a cup of grapes. If i graze on the heavy side during the day, I will skip dinner or eat light low calorie filling snack instead... Etc. I give myself a lot of leeway, I go by average monthly calories so when if I go over average calories one week, I know I can make up for it the week after.

I don't think it's a problem unless you are eating due to emotion and/or eating out of boredom. Even then, if one tracks, it makes one aware and helps keep the weight from creeping back while trying to figuring out things emotionally.

I find that I graze on Saturdays. So, to keep my weight in check, I prepped all the Snacks so I would make healthy choices and know every lick, bite,and sip. It took the pressure off the day and made me feel more normal? I also take a break from logging food that day.

Oh this is SO interesting to me! I graze on Mondays and always allow myself extra leeway. It's far and away my worst eating day of the week but I have learned to allow myself this and then track track track Tuesday - Friday. Interesting.

This is really about developing a way of eating that works for you. It’s only wrong if it doesn’t work.

I don’t graze as such but I snack - usually 3 or 4 a day. I have specific range of things I eat at specific times - yep very routine & yep that anal. I don’t mindlessly snack. The Snacks meet specific needs I have for Protein, fibre, etc. My snacks don’t exceed my daily calories but actually help me meet my caloric & higher protein needs.

I don’t track. Never had to & have always just done random checks about especially with new foods & to ensure I’m not over/under estimating or becoming complacent. I prep most of what I eat myself from scratch so I have a lot of control over what I eat.

I snack on multigrain crackers & liverwurst, cheese, high protein yoghurt, nuts, Protein Bar. Occasionally I’ll snack on fruit (fresh or freeze dried), baked fava Beans or chick peas, multi grain rice crackers & hummus (carefully as a slider), & peanut paste. I tend not to eat sweet foods at all so there’s very little sugar, sugar alternatives or artificial sugar in my diet.

Bonus is the snacking between meals actually helps keep my acidic stomach under better control.

Out of curiosity does anyone else find the time between eating gets less as the day goes on? I eat at 9am, 1pm, 2:30pm, 4pm, 5pm (not always), 6pm & 7pm.

I would say that I graze all day too. I still have a good restriction, especially where meats are concerned, so to get my Protein and enough calories in, I eat tiny meals all day. If

don't manage to eat it, I will go back to it later. Protein yogurt for Breakfast, Homemade lentil and vegetable Soup for lunch, cheese and fruit snack in the afternoon. meat or fish and vegetables for evening meal, nuts and seeds watching TV and a glass of milk before bed.

It works for me and my Constipation

This made me think about grazing vs snacks vs small meals. Now I think I may be doing regular small snacks a day or 6 small meals vs 3 large meals. In the end it's like 4 to 6x a day. It just feels like "grazing" because I eat more often than pre WLS. Makes me wonder.

all depends on how im feeling any particular days.

grazing vs. snacking: i *think*, now that u guys bring it up, the diff between the two is scheduling and/or regularity. i guess for me, meals + Snacks would be at set times more or less with set amounts. grazing is more like whatever: i eat when i feel like it, in small-ish amounts all "day" long (where "day" for me is generally 12-7 pm)

note: i do eat outside this window on occasion but not often

Another good post that makes me think and wonder whether I graze or eat mini meals (or snacks) lol. I don't eat on schedule and there are days I am not hungry till 3 pm so I don't eat at all and just drink coffee and other days I begin at 10 am. I am all over the place when it starts but the time in between is naturally steady I guess, like 2 to 3 hours.

I think much like @ms.sss about snacking: it’s regular & planned. Portions & nutrition are considered. To me grazing is random eating of whatever you want, often emotionally/head hunger driven. Portion size or nutrition is if minimal or no concern. I think small meals are planned too & are more rounded like the part serve of a full meal. You might prepare three meals a day but only eat part of one meal at a sitting finishing it a little later on. Like have a first breakfast & then later have a second breakfast to finish the meal.

When I was trying to stabilise my weight loss I was snacking about 5 times a day as I my meals were still smaller - couldn’tt eat more.. Once my meals became a little larger & equal to or closer to the recommended portion sizes, I didn’t need to snack as much for my needed calories & Protein so I dropped 1or 2 of them a day.

Oh & I eat more across a day & more regularly than I did before surgery too. (Was a meal skipper before.) But I eat better - healthier, more nutritionally dense foods - now & my body burns those calories more efficiently than before (thank you surgery).

Whether it's snacking or grazing we must be prepared. First try to avoid what I was told is slider foods. These are high carb foods such as popcorn, chips, crackers, cakes, etc. You can eat a ton of them but never feel full and they do not have any nutritional value. Instead prepare and weigh out Snacks like nuts, Protein Bars, veggies. I was instructed to eat the food slowly. When I eat nuts I take one at a time nibble it and extend the time I have to enjoy the snack. I was instructed not to take a handful and gulp them down. Same with other foods. Eat slowly, nibble at it and make the eating process last. So far it's a strategy that has worked for me.

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
