Accidently been drinking coffee

Recommended Posts

Hi Bariatric Pals

So I found out today from a friend who had the gastric sleeve 1 week before me, that you can't have coffee/Caffeine for 1-3 months post op. I had no idea.

I tried to call my surgeons office but they're away overseas until mid December. I will stop drinking my morning coffees from now on, but I'm only a few weeks post PO and I've had coffee with almond milk for the past 5 days. So I'm freaking out.

I haven't had any Nausea or acid reflux, 😰 I'm just worried that I may have done something really bad. Any advice on this?

We can't have tea or coffee? o.o whoops i've had both. I wasn't told this either. They even offered me tea and coffee the day after my surgery XD but i had no desire as i could barely drink Water or apple juice they gave me.

I think it's wise to stop until you chat to someone, maybe chat to your GP about it.

Every team is different, your team may not have that rule.

The big thing is caffeine slows down the healing process. So most teams just require you stay away from it for a little while, during your healing.

Other people do have problems with it, so luckily you don't.

My team required 30 days before and after surgery to be caffeine free. I was never a coffee drinker so no issue for me. I sometimes make an iced coffee with a Protein Drink for a change.

I also used Decaf coffee, so you could always do that too. So you still get your coffee without all the caffeine.

there is absolutely no consensus at all among surgeons re: the caffeine issue. Some say you can never have it again for the rest of your life. Some patients are allowed to drink it before they even leave the hospital. Still others say you have to wait one month, or three months, or six months. And then others say it's OK as long as you limit it to 1-2 cups a day. My take on this is that it's not the worst thing you can do. Follow your plan from here on out just so, if asked, you can say you followed the plan - but don't worry about the slip up.

not all surgeons say you can't have coffee or tea. Some are fine with it. No consensus at all on this issue..

My first drink in hospital was coffee and good it was too. If your team has said no coffee, then stay off it. Otherwise drink away. Just stick to the rules your team set. There are a gazillion rules, and I think every team pin them to a dart board and choose the first 20 they hit. Don't worry about it unless you feel unwell

Every program is different. No restrictions for coffee or tea pre or post op as per my surgeon and team. Coffee offered to me right after I woke up from surgery. I drink about 3 cups a day. I have never had issues.

According to previous ASMBS guidelines from the ASMBS website, "Q: Do I need to avoid caffeine after bariatric surgery? A: Caffeine fluids have been shown to be as good as any others for keeping you hydrated. Still, it is a good idea to avoid caffeine for at least the first thirty days after surgery while your stomach is extra sensitive. After that point, you can ask your surgeon or dietitian about resuming caffeine. Remember that caffeine often comes paired with sugary, high-calorie drinks, so be sure you’re making wise beverage choices."

Thank you everyone for your great advice. I feel a lot better now and I'm no longer freaking out about this :) I think i will put off the coffee until i reach day 30 and see if it's still good after that. I'm only a few days from it too. Thanks again

Definitely relax. If your team didn't specifically say "no coffee" then it's fine.

I was offered coffee in hospital the very first night. Been drinking it the whole way along with no issues.

Yeah, adding my voice to the others - there was no restriction on caffeine/coffee pre or post op in my programme so I can't see you'll have done any damage at all. Hope you can relax into this.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
