Dreaded hair loss - question

Recommended Posts

Sorry, I think I was hit by the double whammy of final menopause and the surgery or dumb non-luck. It was curly like 3b and now it’s like a 2 wave. It is so thin you can see through it, but so far not my actual scalp. My old ponytail was a wrist around, and now it’s one finger thick. Most of the brown fell out and the fuzzies are white. It had been salt and pepper like dental floss, but now it’s a bright white that feels like cob webs. Luckily I like the new color as it reminds me of my father. I bought toppers, and pieces to fill in a bit while the shorter hairs grow out. Yes, I ate the Protein and took the Vitamins. There are worse things in the world.

Yeah, I hit Protein and Fluid and still lost a lot of hair. It really is just luck of the draw. Only me and my hairdresser really noticed. I cut my hair above shoulder length to help it not look stringy. Plus is that I couldn’t really pull off short hair when I was heavy- but now that I’m a normal weight i don’t need long hair to hide behind.

I have huge bald spots all over my head at six months post surgery. I won’t go out in public without a hat or bandana on. My hair was lower-back length and I had to cut it to just above my shoulders so I wouldn’t have SO MUCH HAIR going down the drain and getting in my vacuum. My hair was thinning before (due to probable but unconfirmed PCOS), and I had a really rough go of it between months 2 and 4 where I know I was malnourished. It’s starting to grow back already, but that’s probably my biggest frustration right now is my hair.

My hair was pretty much a casualty of WLS. I lost most of my hair and it hasn't grown back. My surgeon speculates that my hair fell out due to the normal telogen effluvium that comes with drastic weight loss. Then it didn't grow back due to age-related Hair loss I would have had anyway (I'm 57). So the surgey sped up the hair loss and I lost it all at once, rather than gradually over a couple of years. But my experience is unusual and I wouldn't take back the 130 pounds I've lost to get my hair back!

I kept my Protein intake high (80g) & took my Vitamins and didn’t have Hair loss. I feel like there’s a lot of hair on my bathroom floor, but my actual hair looks the same as always. (Sleeve 6/30/2021)

Sleeved 12/22 and don't have Hair loss (I'm older as well). Good luck.

You're not out of the woods yet sorry to say mine started at the 4 month mark and a friend at the 6 month mark

Yup, mine was from 6 to 11 months. Have plenty to take from, so no biggie. You'll know when it starts itching up top!

I'm six months out. I see a lot of hair in my comb and in the sink, but it only looks thinner on some days, although I'm not sure why. My hair is very short, and I think that helps it be less noticeable when it sheds. No one else has noticed my hair getting thinner - I asked my hairdresser and he said he couldn't tell, but I am not sure. I always take my Multivitamins and almost always get 70+ g of Protein. We were told that there really isn't anything you can do to prevent Hair loss. Taking extra Biotin can mess up certain lab levels, too. As far as I can tell, I have just been lucky - so far!

I have a lot of fine, long hair. I didn’t think I had Hair loss, but my hairdresser noticed and cut it into a bob for awhile. No bald Patches or anything anyone else noticed. Good luck!

I'm dreading this part too! I adore my long, curly hair. And I'm trying to decide if I should just go ahead and cut it now so maybe it won't look so bad when it does thin out. I didn't have Hair loss with the Lap Band.

Don’t do it! Just wait. It might not happen for you.

Yup mine didn't start falling out till the 6 month mark. My brush is full of hair this morning, going on 8 months. No bald spots but it is thinning for now. I also have met my Protein and Vitamins. I sure hope it grows back after I up my calories on maintenance...

No bald Patches, per se, but I had new growth on one upper temple, and nearly a bald other temple. Rest of head is covered fully, but so much thinner and drier. Still trying to figure out how to style to maximize the hair I have. Pre-op I had long, thick, shiny hair…but I gladly trade it for the weight loss!

I didn’t get full protein/supplements till around two months post-op due to vomiting, so hopefully others will do better!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
