I'm kinda freaking out because they told me I would be sharing a room in the hospital. I am deathly afraid of vomit, like it's my BIGGEST phobia!! I'm scared I'll get put in a room with another bariatric patient who may be puking in the bed next to me. If you had to share a room how was it? Was your room mate also in for gastric surgery?

I had to share a room with the worst human being on the planet!!!! I hate her

But...it was like a day and a half and then I never had to see or hear her stupid face again. So in the big picture, I wouldn’t let it spoil your experience. If I made it through with Helga the she devil, you’ll be fine

LOL...great!!

My last surgery I had to share a room with a lady who did nothing but fart and belch constantly. I felt like I was going to be ill having to spend a day and a half with that lady. And aside from that she talked constantly even when I told her I was putting earbuds in to listen to my audio book. ugh.

I was chuckling at this thread until I got your post and totally LOL'd at my desk That sounds like a horrendous experience!!! I'm so used to my blissful solitude at home, I'd end up chuckin' a pillow at the person at some point

I had another person in my room. A young guy who had an elevated blood glucose level. He was being monitored to get his levels down. We were not a bother to each other during my one night stay. In fact, we had some pleasant conversations.

Somehow I lucked out with a private room, which I was not expecting. I am extremely private and introverted and it was a pleasant relief. I did not vomit after my surgery, and when my surgeon checked on me, I told him I was well, and "I haven't thrown up or anything" and he said, "Well, you aren't supposed to!"

I was specifically told I'd be sharing a room and I was BUMMED. I actually intended to call the hospital and ask about a private room but was so busy prepping I never called. But I ended up with a private room. No idea how. Others on my floor were clearly sharing rooms, but my room wasn't even set up for 2.

I would say it's worth a call to get more info on and see if you can finagle your way into a single room. This would've been my first experience being hospitalized with a roommate and I was NOT looking forward to it.

Thankfully, the surgical center I will go to has private rooms. I have been there before with a shoulder surgery and it felt like a resort! Personally, it would be worth the extra expense even if I did have to pay more for a private room. I’m a very private person and it would drive me crazy to deal with someone else’s noises the whole time.

That won't be an issue for me as our hospital only offers private rooms for all patients.

I shared a room but the curtain was closed between us. I kept my headphones in most of the time to listen to music or watch videos. I think you’ll be ok!

I shared and was definitely the Helga the She-Devil of our room. I had a pretty difficult surgery and I had a bad reaction to the anaesthesia and threw up for hours. I couldn't sleep and was moving around my room. I was in so much pain I couldn't read, watch TV or relax. I also cried out from a pain most of the night because I didn't want to take the morphine because it was giving me a rash and hurting my stomach. A couple of times my roommate called a nurse for me. The next morning, my surgeon came in and without warning showed me a photograph of the missing bit of my stomach, so I threw up. Anyway, later on I was out doing my laps - walking around the ward, my roommate was moved into another room (she left without even saying goodbye!). According to a nurse, she requested to swap rooms so she could get some sleep. So yeah... I had a private room my final night.

I did share a room with a very nice Finnish lady who unfortunately had a tumor on her colon that had to be removed along with a small section of her colon also. She was quite friendly although we could barely speak to each other because of the language barrier. When my husband would come to visit me, that was the only time I could really talk to her at all since he could translate what I wanted to say. Before I left, she was not doing very well, but I hope that she has a great recovery all the same.

I actually think that for me at least, I liked having someone else in the room since I didn't feel quite so alone.

I had a nice roommate and we ignored each other unless one of us needed something. I did throw up because I had a cold and was coughing after the surgery. It was just a little liquid and as far as I know we both survived.

Lord deliver us all from Helga the She-Devil and all her ilk! And Hurray for private rooms where you can kick back and be YOU without worries. You may have nausea, you may have flatulence, you may even burp like a 10 year old boy, so nice not to have to apologize for your organ recitals and such.???
