Am I weird or is it just me

Recommended Posts

I've read about people having food rejection, bad taste buds and nausea and thankfully I haven't experienced it. Tomorrow will be my one month surgiversary and I'm 27 lbs down since surgery and 52 lbs total lost since first appt with surgeon. I feel like I'm not losing like I should and keep telling myself not to compare, but I can't help but wonder if my sleeve isn't small enough. I did, however, find myself ill the other day because I ate a small sweet potato too fast. Bad habit from eating lunch at my desk. I'm 53 and determined to be 150lbs on my 5'8 frame by my 54th birthday Oct 2019 ....I just need to slow down my anxiousness and let the process work. Only 110 to go...

It's not "just you" but it's still not a healthy mental state at all.

Long haul not quick trip.

I guess I'm very lucky to have not experienced all of the physical struggles with nausea and food rejection. Don't get me wrong, I'm super thankful and am pleased with my current weight loss! I just need to focus on my loss and noy compare. It really hits home when I see that my clothes are falling off! Going to have to purchase some new work clothes soon. I'd hate to be walking into work and find them down around my ankles!![emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

Something that so many people miss too, is that, you CAN lose body fat and not lose any weight. There have been so many times where I've stalled out, stayed the same weight or even gained a bit and my body fat % would continue to reduce. It's called Weight Loss Surgery, but it really should be called Fat Loss Surgery.

Agree, for sure!

Same here. The only thing that has made me sick is Vitamins, otherwise haven't had much trouble with food. I am coming up on my 1 month (9/2) and keep watching the scale. I'm feeling like I'm not losing fast enough, or enough. Im moving on to soft foods and quite nervous about it. I know it's not healthy and hoping I stop obsessing over the scale soon.

I never experienced trouble with nausea, vomiting, or food rejection either and I do indeed feel blessed about it and you should too! I have trouble with bread items but this is normal.

One thing I try to do instead of comparing my progress to others, is compare my progress now to my past weight loss attempts. I’m doing pretty darn well comparing apples to apples if you catch my drift.

If you are like me, and have over 150 pounds to lose, it’s a marathon not a sprint so don’t get too impatient. If you follow your program, you will achieve results!

27lb loss in your first month? How can that not be enough? What did you expect to lose? You are doing really well, don't underestimate your success.

Impatience is the undoing of many a good result when disappointment sets in. Set reasonable goals and but not all scale goals, set yourself some non scale goals, they can be as simple as walking up a flight of stair without getting breathless or walking around the block in x minutes, seeing your toes for the first time in a long time, reducing blood pressure or cholesterol leves, etc etc.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy!!! Just have seen people post that have lost 27 to 30 (starting weight similar to mine)in 2 wks vs 4. Just makes me question is something different? Maybe it's my age (many are younger that i see with those results) 'll take any loss tho. I know it's not a rapid process to the goal. :-)

It is extremely rapid. I don't have any idea what your expectations were. A lot of people on here hardly lose anything the first month due to swelling or other issues. Don't compare yourself to others. You'll just make yourself miserable. We're all on our own path.

hahaha. I'd cut a bit*h for a 27lb loss in one month. ;) Remember, the grass is ALWAYS greener. Heck, right now, I'd prolly cut a bit*h just for an 8lb/month loss. :D

It’s a marathon, not a sprint. And if you’re not losing weight fast enough, your surgeon’s office or dietitian will tell you. Whenever I thought I wasn’t, either of the two would tell me everything looked great.

Just need to relax. It was easy to gain the weight but will be a struggle at times to lose it. Don't be in a hurry and do what the your surgeon tells you. It will come off

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
