Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies: POST-OP Discussion

I had a lot of issues with Constipation, but I was home the same day I had surgery. (sleeve w/ hh repair) and wish I had taken something earlier. I'm better now though. I am not sure what the tightness is but I've heard it from several people. I think the area behind my incision is part of the healing process and scar tissue forming.

As far as gas pain goes, just like everyone else will tell you, walking helps a lot. Pats on the back help too. I liked mine more like pounding on my back.

I am going to bring things to the hospital for constipation like Miralax, suppositories. And taking colace now twice a day. I don't have a liquid preop diet so maybe this well help also. Thanks for your response.

Jill, I've had tightness, like a big knot behind my largest incision. I also have had some issues with a large hardness in my upper right abdomen. The last few days, around my largest incision has been red and itchy and it comes and goes. I'm going to touch base with my doc on Monday just to make sure I'm not developing an infection.

Other than that, I feel pretty good. I went out to a concert with my daughter last night. Luckily, we were at the barrier so I had something to lean on, but I was on my feet from 5 pm until after 11.

My surgeon gave me permission to start venturing into soft foods a little early but the only thing I've had other than shakes and broth (just the first few days) is cottage cheese and scrambled eggs, white cheddar cauliflower Soup, a small bit of broccoli cheese mush, and egg drop Soup.

I would love to hear what you are doing with regards to meal planning.

I’ve been sticking with scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, ricotta, and broth with Protein Powder. My nutritionist gave me a great recipe for ricotta, marinara sauce, mozzarella, and parm. I’ll post it when I go downstairs. She said I could eat it during the puréed food stage.

I’ve been hearing about this ricotta bake since before my preop diet and now that I’m just about two weeks post-op and only 9 days from puréed foods I am getting even more excited to try it out!!

Have you tried milk of magnesia or anything stronger than the tea? I had something similar yesterday/day before. One large and painful solid and then liquidy for rest of the day. I’ve been trying to have a little MoM each day to prevent constipatio/build up because a few nights ago I had really painful stomach/cramping/eventual BM and I want to avoid doing that again...

I’m a month out and I still have BMs like this. I am still taking a stool softener that eventually helps but when I go I never know what I’m going to get.

@mercmerc I think mine says 30-60mL for adults. I think I’ve been just doing 30mL and sometimes less depending on how blocked up/full/bloated I’m feeling. In my experience it has worked better when I take it in the evening for a BM the next day than in the morning or early afternoon, but it’s difficult to know for sure.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
