I'm getting my surgery on the 22 of March. I'm so excited after having to fight with my insurance company for 3 weeks & I thought it wasn't going to happen. I'm actually getting the sleeve after having the band for a few years & it was removed this past summer. The band didn't work at all for me. I'm nervous about the sleeve working, but I'm very excited to finally get it done. I'm struggling with the liquid diet. I'm hungry & I can't keep drinking these shakes! There's got to be something else I can have! Good luck with your surgery!

Best of luck to you! I'm hoping you have a speedy recovery!

I had my surgery March 5th. I have had a really rough time since getting out. I had to stay overnight and I felt fantastic when I got out. With the exception of the incisions not healed all the way I am doing good. The day after my surgery, my son passed away unexpectedly at age 31. The police came to my house an hour after I got out. I have not concentrated on what I should be doing and immediately following finding out I ate foods I should not because people were bringing all kinds of food to my house . I ate stuff like a half a cupcake and I began smoking. Losing my son has taken its toll on me. Physically I feel fine, but mentally I am heartbroken and my coping skills are weak. I had lost 13 pounds and the last two days gained 2 and I actually was following the instructions. It has been a roller coaster since the day after and I feel hungry and it might be hungry in my brain. It almost just seems I don't even care about having the surgery anymore, I have had other things on my mind like preparing for his service and everything and now that it is over I feel empty. I am hoping to get back on track...

@presurg1 I also am the mother of an Angel son. My son died 10 years ago also at the age of 31. When I saw your message it gave me such a jolt emotionally. I don't know what I can offer or what would be helpful to say. All I can do is offer friendship, and I do that wholeheartedly. If you ever feel like talking please remember I too have walked that path and I walk it still. God Bless you at this time.

I’m truly sorry to hear about your son, my condolences to you and family. I pray that in time things will fall back in place and you can continue with caring for yourself. Please come back update us, try to relax and think of the wonderful memories.

My heart is breaking for you. Take the time to take care of yourself. It is ok to be a little selfish right now. You are in my prayers.

Apple and Stevie,

How are y’all doing? The gas pain this morning was pretty bad. The pain meds have been great and I’ve gotten in some good walks.

I’ve had Water, broth and Jello. May be able to go home in the morning.

Hope y’all are doing great!!

The gas pain has been bad. That and the nausea have really put a damper on my recovery. Walking helps a lot!

The broth and Gelatin cups at the hospital were icky, so I only had apple juice and water. I’m having my first Protein Shake post op right now.

Weirdest feeling so far was when I was eating a pudding cup and could only make it about halfway down. Feeling your stomach full on so little is a very odd sensation when you are used to eating a full plate to feel full. Eating a pudding cup before wouldn’t have even made a dent in my appetite before.

I did experience the post op regret that others have mentioned. Still feeling it a bit since it’s so hard to move around. Once I can use my abs without pain, I’ll be in a better mood.

Overall, things went according to plan. My doctor and nurses were excellent and I’d definitely recommend them. 10 days until I can have soft foods!

I am so excited I haven't been able to sleep for most of the week. I'm like a kid on Christmas morning. At 930 tomorrow I check-in to have my sleeve!
I haven't told anyone on my job either. My partner and mother are the only ones that know. I don't know about anyine else, but at first I felt like I was doing something to be embarrassed about, but that's not it. This was/is a very deep and personal decision and I didn't want the opinions of other people that had no idea what I was going thru for so many years being obese. There is much confusion on my job as to what I'm doing and it cracks my up! Am I going away for vacation, FMLA[emoji848][emoji848][emoji848]

I didn’t tell anyone either. I was going to, but I don’t want them to discount the work I’m doing to lose the weight. This isn’t the easy way out. More like a tool to aid in your success. We can do this!

I’m doing well. I just came home yesterday afternoon.

Have you been using your belt? That has helped me a lot!

Hey Stevie, don’t mean to interrupt, but was wondering which belt are you using?

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
