6.5 mos. post op and feeling DISCOURAGED

Recommended Posts

I am 6.5 mo post op, my starting weight was 240, my surgery weight after 3 day diet was 232, my GW was 160 and I'm stuck at 155-158 for almost a month now. I feel a little discouraged and tired of eating. It feels like I have to feed my sleeve every 2 hrs like a baby. It's alot of work. I'm happy with my weight loss but I enjoyed seeing the scale go down every few days.....

I'm sorry, but maybe I'm confused. Did you say your goal weight was 160? And your current weight is 155-158? Why aren't you estactic about your progress and meeting your goal?

@T Patton

I know I sound COO COO and ungrateful but I feel like I should still be losing a little bit more.... I guess what I'm saying is whats next??? I want to feel excited like I did when I was losing

Weight loss is a function of calories in vs. calories out. I suspect that you are taking in just enough calories to maintain your weight. You lose weight one of two ways you either decrease the amount you take in, which the VGS helps you do, or you increase your activity level through exercise. It sounds like you are burning what you are taking in thus you are staying the same weight. So if you can reduce your food/calorie intake anymore without feeling miserable, you need to increase your exercise. FYI hunger is a product of nutrition the crappier food you eat, the more likely you will hunger. Replace the chemical-laced cooking with natural, healthy eating, and you might feel satisfied longer and probably be able to reduce your caloric intake.

@JeffN

You ARE correct. I am burning off what I'm taking in, so it makes sense to eat less or exercise more. I guess I need to reprogram my mind to do one or the other and get busy. Thank you for the advice!!

How much more are you trying to lose? what did your doctor say? If you want to lose more, make sure you're exercising and sticking with the plan and tracking your foods and drinks. You will lose some, but you don't want to lose too much more.

@ Tammy T Patton

I would like to get to 150... I do track my meals daily and I get some sort of exercise in daily as well.. BUT I don't want to lose tooo much more. My husband has already asked me not to lose anymore. Lol

Have you tried to replace some of your meals with high Protein? IF you have no more body fat to lose you will start to lose muscle mass which is not good either.

No... Give me an example of a high protein replacement.

It is not about your husband, its about were you are comfertable at, what is your bmi currently?

Since you are petite, a normal bmi has you weighing between 110lbs and 145lbs. We typically aim for the upper end of the range unless you become a distance runner or the like.

140 seems like an excellent goal, and since you are only 6 months out, I feel sure you'll reach it. Even losing 1 pound a week will get you there before your 1 year surgiversary.

Are you still drinking your Protein Drinks at least once a day? That has high Protein in it. I'm over a year out and I still drink 1 Premier Protein drink once a day. Not the powder form, but the ones in the carton. Are you tracking what you eat and drink? MyfitnessPal is a great app for that and that way you can see how much caloric intake you're having a day. There's a science to success, but you have to do the work and tracking tracking tracking is key. Every nibble, bite, lick, drink...

I definitely understand how frustrating it can be because I've been there, done that, and felt just as you have. I think you've made excellent progress and should be very proud of yourself. Weight becomes more challenging to lose when you don't have as much of it that you need to lose. Though you're still technically overweight, you're no longer obese, and that definitely has an impact. Your body might also simply need some time to adapt. I had a very lengthy stall at the six month mark, too, and saw my weight bounce up and down five pounds. What actually broke it was increasing rather than decreasing my calories. I just added in some more healthy foods, and that did it for me. When you're not consuming enough your metabolism can become sluggish.

Just keep going. I thought I'd reach my first goal in six months because of the rate I was losing at first, but it ended up taking a full year. I thought that was it, that I wouldn't lose any more to reach my "dream" goal. I just saw my endocrinologist who told me that I've lost 19 more pounds since this time last year. Depending on the brand I'm in a size 0 to 4 now, which would have been unbelievable to me two years ago. Relaxing actually seemed to help me. I had my husband put the scale on the highest shelf so that if I wanted it, I'd need to get out the step ladder. I'd be so discouraged when the numbers didn't go the way I wanted that I'd be more inclined to either "cheat" out of frustration, or to obsess. Instead I just tried to be reasonable about what I ate, and how much I exercised and to stay focused on that instead of size and scale numbers.

One perk I've had from losing weight more gradually has been no loose skin. It actually looks firmer now due to being more toned. Maybe that will be a silver lining for you, too.

      April Surgery
      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
