How hungry do you guys feel after 1 week of surgery? Is the hunger feeling totally gone?

Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I've only been slightly hungry one evening for a couple of hours, but since my caloric intake was so low I just sipped some more Soup.

14 days post op here. Head hunger not totally gone, but real hunger, pretty much. Sometimes it's hard to figure out the difference but when you go to the kitchen to eat something, you automatically think "Nah, I don't feel like that." I was told that for awhile, one may feel hungry at first because when you're swollen, it sometimes mimics hunger. There is a video on youtube that covers that. Also an acidic stomach mimics hunger as well, so I have to make sure I take my antacid twice daily no matter what. While I may "think" I'm hungry from time to time, staying between 600-800 cal/day is unbelievably easy at this stage. Hope this helps.

I had surgery on 9/12 and other than some nausea for a few hours after surgery, I have felt great. No gas pains, just a sore belly.

broth was wonderful after surgery. I haven't had any problems sipping other than nervous to take bigger sips to help me get all my fluids in for the day. I am praying things stay this smooth.

Sleeved 9/6 my anxiety is crazy because I'm having no issues getting Protein or liquids down. I also don't feel full but other people told me once I start more dense food that will change. On another note I walked a full mile today =)

How many calories are you guys able to take in? I currently do 75g of Protein in 3 smoothies (fat free greek yoghurt and apple juice), plus Soup once a day. I calculated roughly 800 calories intake. What is the ideal intake at this stage? I am worried about starving my body and then plateauing quickly. I already lost 13lbs in 12 days since my surgery.

9/13 for me. The day of surgery was horrible pain. I had the band removed and sleeve made. The gas and incision pains were tough. That night I was much better and walked, walked walked. Home the next day, tired and sore but walked. Day 3 stopped pain pills. Only allowed CL and Water for 5 days. Very light headed and dopey. Day 5 began Protein shakes and broth. Vitamin patch began day 3. One week today. Each day gets better. Only one pain pill in last few days. I've been cooking for my family and sitting with them. I'm doing a little too much and I think I need a little more rest. All in all progressing. Good luck everyone.

@@DesertWarrior My calorie intake is around 800 and I already plateaud. I'm on day 15 and haven't lost in close to a week, but I lost 13 the first week. I can't seem to get my intake higher. I'm not going to freak out at the stall, as they're common, though usually it seems they're somewhere between the 3-5 weeks for a lot of people. Yesterday I upped my Protein and lowered my carbs a bit and dropped .2 of a lb, but I'm just focusing on slow and steady and the long term so I don't get discouraged.

Sleeved 9/17. No gas pain, I don't know what my doc did different, but I didn't have any of that shoulder/back pain people talk about. First couple of days were rough trying to get in my fluids. But I have had no nausea, even post-op. Which was surprising for me because I have a history of severe nausea after surgery. My doc's anesthesiologist listened to me talk about it and did something with the IV mix and gave me a pill to take and that took care of all of it.

The restriction made it hard for me to get to Fluid and Protein goals for a little over a week. I was super fatigued until I could start on soft foods and get my carbs up enough to get me out of ketosis (I get VERY sick on ketosis) so I haven't been able to start working out yet. I signed up for the gym on Friday and will start my Water workouts this week.

But every day things got more comfortable and easier. I'm at almost 5 weeks now and am doing pretty good. I'm getting usually 800-1000 cal in a day and meeting my Protein goals. I've got enough energy to move around more now and am feeling pretty good.

The loss of cravings has been nothing short of amazing. After I got cleared for soft foods my hubby and I went to the store. I passed a lot of things that were binge triggers for me in the past, and part of my brain went "ooh, that would be good, and it would count as soft" and the other part of my brain would imagine eating it and go "eh. doesn't sound that great, actually". So I can walk away from pastries and sugary stuff with no problem.

I'm loving my sleeve!!

Let's talk weight this morning. I'm feeling bummed. I'm 17 days out from surgery and lost 12 lbs. Is that about average for everyone? I've been stuck at the same weight for 3 days and the only thing different is my gummie Vitamins. Have you noticed how many carbs they have..lol I bought the vita fusion Calcium with Bone support and I have to take them 3 x a day and the kirkland Multivitamin is 2 x a day. Each serving is 2 gummies. I did go to the LA County Fair this weekend and had 12k steps on my fitbit. It felt good to be out.

@@turtle5569 Stay off the scale for now! Weight fluctuates - your body needs time to adjust to all that's going on. Be sure to meet your Protein and Fluid goals. I am a gummie Vitamin person myself but will be switching post-op (too many carbs/sugars). It's right in time for the 3 week stall - so your Vitamins may not have anything to do with it. You've done excellent so far - keep it up!

@@KristenLe I try so hard to not to get on, but I can't help it. Its easier said than done. I do have my 3 protien shakes a day and my Water intake is about 48 oz. Still working on the 64 oz.

Turtle5559

I haven't checked, too scared it'll become an obsession. Last I checked which is when I first got home was 14 pounds. That was pre op diet and 1 day post op.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
