I'll be 3 weeks post-op tomorrow. I'm not able to get the damn Protein in! I was drinking premiere protein and doing ok, but now they make me sick. I bought unflavored powder to mix in Soup , oatmeal, etc. however I can only eat 4 bites of those at a time. It just doesn't add up to enough. I was able to try the ricotta bake tonight. Loved it but 1/8 of the recipe (one cupcake half full) was too much. I feel sick now. Obviously, I can't push purée any higher.

Any suggestions? How bad is it that I'm only getting 15-20 grams a day? I'm not hungry, but it is stressing me out.

If the Protein you are using doesn't agree with you, I would try another kind. I am drinking the premier Protein shakes (2 a day) and that is about all the Protein I can get in. I do make my meals (2 oz) with added protein if I can and that adds a little bit. Protein is important. You may want to try some of the engineered foods that are designed for bariatric patients as they have added protein. I have seen Soups, puddings, oatmeal etc. I have not purchased any of these yet myself, but it might help to use those for meals so that you are making sure to get more protein.

Also, you can use the unflavored protein to mix into a beverage that you like to give you more variety. Mix it in crystal light or another zero calorie beverage.

If you body does not get enough protein it will take what it needs from your muscles. This is not a good thing. Your heart is a muscle also. Hope some other members can suggest other types of Protein drinks that might help but I would definetely try some different brands. Its tough because everything is done so slowly (eating and drinking). Seems like every waking hour is consumed with remembering to constantly sip. Good luck to you!

I've found Isopure unflavored to work well with a lot when I cook, but it needs to be dissolved in cold fluids than just dumping it into a hot Soup (it'll clump up and it's super gross ) and it helps me make sure I'm getting enough Protein in everything minus my flavored waters or Decaf iced teas

My nut really hasn't pushed Protein in these early stages - my booklet says 60g when I start eating proper foods, but nobody has pressed the issue with me. I am nearly 4 weeks out and getting nowhere near 60!! Maybe it's an Australian thing, lol, but honestly, we aren't pressured too much in the early stages to get high numbers in of protein etc.

We also don't have the vast array of products that Americans have - I am so jealous!!!!

Lots of our foods aren't sugarfree like in the USA too! I just read about all of your goodies and get so jealous

15-20 grams a day is not nearly enough. My target is 100 grams. The lowest target my surgeon recommends for anyone at his practice is 80 grams.

Protein is critical for healing and weight loss. The sooner you can get in enough protein and fluids the better you will feel.

I would highly recommend you keep pushing both. Sip all day if you have to. Keep trying different protein shakes and supplements. Try Syntrax nectar, ProtiDiet liquid beverage concentrates, Quest, powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury, etc., etc. You can get sample sizes to try. Just keep sipping.

I also have only been told to aim for 50G Protein a day and stay under 800 cals. I'm at 4 weeks and believe I'm healing well and am certainly choosing foods with Protein but could someone explain why the extra protein helps you loose more weight? For instance I could easy add some protien powder to my zucchini slice etc but I didn't think it was necessary given the slice already has eggs....

I would also like to know why getting more Protein in helps you lose weight faster?

@@alohagirl22 Protein is not stored in the body. It is necessary for metabolism and burning fat. If you do not get enough Protein - your body will break down your muscle mass for protein. Google protein deficiency for more information.

Eating too little protein can result in these symptoms as well:

  • A sluggish metabolism
  • Trouble losing weight
  • Trouble building muscle mass
  • Low energy levels and fatigue
  • Poor concentration and trouble learning
  • Moodiness and mood swings
  • Muscle, bone and joint pain
  • Blood sugar changes that can lead to diabetes
  • Slow wound healing
  • Low immunity

In addition to shakes, I also use Protein Bars, like Think Thin and Pure Protein - they don't taste great, but are edible, and they are low sugar and roughly 20g of protein each.

Thanks all! I'm going to try a few other brands that were mentioned. My goal right now is 40 grams. If I could just choke down a shake, I would be there. I'll keep trying.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
