Not even 6 weeks post op-Gaining weight?

Recommended Posts

Tuesday will be 6 weeks post op and I am GAINING! Please explain how this is possible and don't suggest that this is a stall. I was on a stall from 2/5 to 2/21 when I didn't even lose a pound. But at least I didn't gain. Now I am gaining. To give you some additional insight here are my statistics.

DAY Weight Calories Protein

For my friends reading this remember I am the one whose Dr told me to reduce my protein from 60 down to 41. As you can see I didn't really do that. Is that why I am gaining?

Did your doc give you a reason as to why you should only have 41g Protein? I think thats really low.

Full disclosure, I am not a medical professional. In my opinion though...your calories are way too low and so is your Protein. What are you eating? Must be all Protein shakes to have calories/protein numbers like that. Are you losing inches in this process?

I journal on MFP so the easiest way to do this is cut and paste. I hope it works.

Wow it didn't keep the format oh Boy what a mess. I cleaned it up and kept just the foods I ate.

I hope this helps as I can't keep gaining. And why would eating less cause me to gain. After about 1 to 1 1/2 oz of solid food I get a pain on my left side under the breast. When I tired to eat more on the 29th by eating a can of tuna for dinner I had pain for 3 hours.

Yes he told me that now that I weigh less I need to eat less Protein. Which based on what I read and everyone said (on that thread that I did last week) is too low. So I tried to keep my protein above the 41 that the Dr said I should have now.

Both your calories and protein are really low.

Based on everything I know and my own experience you have got to get in more: protein, calories, and Water.

You need least 64 oz of water/fluid a day.

Until you can get in the required nutrients, nothing on the scale matters. Your body is fighting back hard.

A 4lb increase, while scary, could just be Water retention. If I eat canned Soups, the prepackaged turkey breast, etc., I will have cankles by the next day and not be able to wear my rings.

I gained 3 pounds at 6 weeks postop and sat there for a month. At the time I was taking a medication that made me very nauseous so I could barely eat and drink anything. I was getting 50-60g Protein, but Fluid goals were hard and I actually needed IV fluids 3 times. My calories were really low (under 600). As soon as I stopped the medication, I doubled my fluids and upped my calories to at least 800 and lost 8 pounds the next time I Weighed in at 12 weeks.

So yes, gains can and do happen. Mine actually happened when I was eating less than any other time postop. Your hydration status will also influence daily fluctuations. I gained 11 pounds overnight the last time I got IV fluids. Like everyone else said, I'd suggest upping your Protein and calories and making sure you are getting plenty of fluids.....64oz is minimum, you should shoot for 80-100oz.

In the meantime, STAY OFF THE SCALE!

Sorry to be indelicate but is there any chance you are constipated? People can hold onto 5 -10 lbs of poop easily, and if you aren't going regularly, it will show up on the scale as a gain.

Your calories are way low, and your sodium intake is quite high. Anything that comes out of a can or a package (soup, lunch meat, even cheese) is high in sodium. More than likely, you are retaining Fluid from the sodium, and not losing because your calories are so low.

Just how experienced is your surgeon anyway? His recommendation is so far from anything I have heard I am really curious.

My Protein requirement was increased from 60 grams to 80. At 6 weeks, I was told to let shakes be the exception rather than the rule, and get my Protein from real food.

On your list I see a lot of cheese. I agree about the sodium comment. When I got stuck, I had to drop nuts, Peanut Butter and cheese, and reduce dairy. Most of my protein now comes from lean meats like chicken and fish, eggs, and Beans. Chili seems to be my "go - to" when I don't know what I want.

I wish you the best. Hang in there.

Amanda,

I don't know for sure what's going on with you -- but I thought you might like to see my Week 5 food stats and weight loss:

Day Cals Protein Weight

Sun 814 88 202.4

Mon 686 67

Tue 819 81

Wed 546 64

Thu 719 65

Fri 738 70

Sat 787 71

Sun 199.8

I drank at least 64 ounces of Water each day. My week's weight loss was 2.4 pounds.

I think you're eating too little and not eating enough Protein. And I also think you could be constipated.

Thanks everyone for your input, that is why I love this site so much. I went for bike ride came back and saw all these replies.

So let me start by saying yes I agree that my Protein and calories are low but every time I eaten food this week and for the past 3 weeks I experienced pain under my left breast. That pain is why I am still drinking a Protein shake or Protein hot chocolate in the morning, even though my Dr told me to stop the liquid Protein. This morning I had Think Thin protein oatmeal and within 4 small bites I had pain. I read the paper and 15 minutes later went back to it and was able to finish the cup. My Dr says I should be done eating in 20 minutes and only eat 3 times a day. It took me about 7 minutes to eat those 4 bites, waited 15 minutes that is 22 minutes and it took another 20 minutes after that to finish the rest of the cup. If I had stopped at the 20 minute mark I would have only had the 4 bites. To eat all that food which is only 1.76 oz till you mix it with Water (not sure how much that makes) in 20 minutes I can't do it. I always was a slow eater.

Questions So do I blow off his 20 minutes and just keep eating with the breaks in between?Do I keep to the 3 times a day or just blow that off too and eat more often?

Next Sodium I went back and looked at the sodium here is what I found

Sunday 1,395

Monday 1.611

Tuesday 1,347

Wednesday 739

Thursday 839

Friday 856

Saturday 786

Was surprised to see that some items the Dr said I should eat were so high in sodium like the turkey lunch meat, the Lentil Soups and the cheeses. The Dr's office doesn't have a dietitian on staff yet, they are trying to get one on board and as of 2 weeks ago they were still working out insurance approvals and scheduling for her.

Questions what should my sodium being? Should I eat more like what Ann was eating at 6 weeks 550 to 800 65 to 88 protein? By the way Ann that was very helpful, thanks.

As for the Dr here is the info on him

Medical Director of the Institute for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery

He is highly regarded among his peers for his technical skills, excellent outcomes and low complication rates.

On staff at our Medical Center since 1995, He started the bariatric surgery program in 2000 with an extensive background in weight loss surgery. The Dr. trained under Dr. Alan Wittgrove, pioneer of the Laparoscopic approach of Gastric Bypass Surgery and the first surgeon to perform a Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass in the world.

Since then, the Dr. has performed thousands of Laparoscopic weight loss surgery and has trained 36 surgical teams from around the world in his techniques.

After graduating from Birmingham Southern College, the Dr. attended the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. He completed an internship and residency in General Surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami, Florida.

The Dr. is proficient in both open incision and Laparoscopic weight loss surgery. In addition to bariatric surgery, he performs an entire range of general surgery, including gallbladder removal, hernia repairs, heartburn surgery, colon and intestinal surgery, stomach surgery and skin cancer surgery.

Sorry I do not know how to take off the blue since I copied the info above and pasted it.

However to answer the other question. Yes I am having Constipation problems. TMI probably!! I use to go every day before surgery and in these almost 6 weeks I can count on 1 hand how many times I went. When I do go it is very little. I tired the Citrucel twice that the Dr told me to take and it is disgusting to drink. So what do I do?

To be up 6 pounds in one week is very discouraging to me. I agree I probably need to just weigh once a week and not every day.

Thanks everyone for being here for me as I am on this journey alone. No family and friends I can talk to except for all of you here.

@@ssflbelle my surgeon recommends Milk of Magnesia + Dulcolax for Constipation. I have only needed it a couple of times post op, but when I did need it, it worked like a charm. Other people use Miralax with good results.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
