Certainly possible, time change completely screwed me up, not a lot of sleep. I went and did a bunch of reading about this dish and it is indeed made from raw hamburger though.

Raw beef? As long as it is with 100% USDA Grade A, lean, E.Coli, then I guess it is ok. :)

So a variation of tartar then? I missed that. Eating meat cooked or raw is all kind of gross to me. I do know that just like sushi there is a certain grade requirement for serving it uncooked and certain food acids or citrus can be used to "cook" it like in ceviche. In the end I guess it's whatever floats your boat. ;)

I'm Palestinian and that's a must have. Instead of frying it though I make it baked in the oven with think layers of the "kibbeh" and use lean beef and lamb mixed. I put more meat than the bulgur wheat and it's fantastic! I eat it raw too.

What? No beef carpaccio in your lives? No steak tartare? With a raw egg yolk nestled on top or mixed in for the timid? You are missing out on some special dishes. Really. I mean it.

Some of you mention that you eat sushi. Does that preclude sashimi, my preference? Does the rice give you courage?

I thought I was the squeamish one. One of you specified E. coli as a requirement for eating anything raw. How does that compute?

I spent several years managing a restaurant, I am or was Serve-safe certified, I am well aware of the risks of eating raw meat. For me, it is a personal choice, I judge no one else. Do whatever you will.

Did you think I was judging? Alas, there is nothing so sad as an intended jest flapping in the wind.

P.S. My reference to E. coli was based on someone else's message.

Oh no, not at all, my post was to indicate that I don't judge. I make informed decisions for myself, but others can and will do whatever they want.

It's all love and peace here.

I'm vegetarian with aims to go vegan. I barely like the idea that I currently eat eggs and dairy. Eating actual animal flesh is out of the question. I'm also deathly allergic to all seafood . I used to eat sushi, but only the vegetarian options. Sashimi is also a giant no go.

I haven't had them post-op because of the rice. if I get in a cooking mood I may buy some grape leaves and stuff them with a black rice mixture.

Be careful with kibbeh, when its fried its very very unhealthy. I second the kibbeh nayyeh suggestion. It is the most delicious mazza in my opinion.

For the grape leaves/dolma suggestion, pretty sure once you have no restrictions you can eat them. Also be aware, they are stuffed with rice.

Might I make some middle eastern suggestions that are low carb?:

1. Shanklish, a goat cheese salad.

2. Muhammara, a red spicy paste with nuts

3. Tabouleh salad. Has bulghur but not essential to the dish and not enough to be high carb.

4. Grilled kafta. Can be high fat but 0 carb so if you are going Keto it should be fine.

5. Hummus or foul without bread. Also be weary, you would be surprised how much fat there is in hummus from the seasame paste. Again, works for keto.

6. Grilled chicken with toum (garlic paste).

7. BBQ pro tip: grilled onions and grilled tomatoes. Very common in middle eastern bbqs and very delicious.

Things that should be occasional because they are high carb and fat: fried kibbeh, shawerma, muajanat/manaeesh/middle eastern pizza although as an alternative to regular pizza they are relatively good. Thin crust and if you get the zaatar then you avoid the cheese, fried falafel, our rice dishes also have lots of oil, phyllo/cheese rolls (fried).

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
