I have been very private about it, only telling 1 friend and my supervisor for the time off at work. I feel uneasy discussing it . Anyone else feel like this?

I told my family (because I thought they would be supportive and because I need their help with my kids while I am in the hospital and first get home) and they weren't as supportive as I had thought they would be. Sooo I decided to just keep quiet and not tell people about my surgery. However, a lot of them have come around since then, and they are SO EXCITED for me to have surgery- and the more people they are telling outside of our immediate family, they more people who are being supportive and telling me how excited they are and how great this will be for me.

Also one of my pet peeves is to read from others who have had surgery that they lie and just tell people they lost weight through diet and exercise. They certainly are NOT Helping to eliminate the stigma of weight loss surgery! All they are doing is helping perpetuate the stigma that people who get surgery are lazy and could lose the weight if they just worked harder at diet and exercise.

One of my daughters suffers from mental illness and through the past 3 years I have learned the only way to eliminate the stigmas associated with mental illness is to be open and talk about it to others. Every opportunity is a great opportunity to EDUCATE someone. It is a very empowering thing when you can rework your thinking and change your mindset that way.

Now I am coming around and have peace with telling people. I am not running around shouting it to everyone, but I do not feel ashamed of what I am doing and have no problem telling others. People will think what they are going to think anyway. One of the greatest things to come from my choice to have this surgery so far, is that I have learned to finally stop living my life for other people and have started making choices for myself (including my surgery).

So I'm just gonna say some stuff . Maybe it will sound crazy - if so I blame it on liquid diet for 2 weeks lol-

Maybe its stuff you all thought about also.

I had the strangest thought the other day- what if this doesn't work either????

I mean, I have spent a small fortune ( enough to fund a small country I 'm sure) over the years on pre packaged foods plans, gyms , exercise equipment, trainers, pills, shots,drinks,-----did I miss anything???

and what if this too fails???

Is anyone else alittle freaked out?

I just needed to get it off my chest to people that (hopefully) get it.

Thanks for your support !

I think this is a very normal fear to have. I can relate, especially since I have tried literally every diet since I was in 5th grade. To me, this feels like it is a "last resort". It is really easy to think that after a million failed attempts that the million and one time will fail as well. I have worked so hard to get to this point and am just so tired and sick of being fat and overweight, that I am giving it my all. Try and just take one day at a time. The more smaller victories I have, the easier it gets. I had 3 times I was SO CLOSE to cheating on my pre-op diet (and I mean cheating cheating- like ordering a fast food meal at a drive-through) but I didn't. I distracted myself, and eventually those cravings went away and I felt like a million bucks later when I realized how awesome and how proud I was of myself for not giving in to the cravings.

It is like when I stopped smoking (3 years ago now YAY!). I have the urge to smoke almost everyday still, however I have learned how to deal with the cravings and I know that if I do something else or distract myself for 5 minutes or so- that the craving will go away. This helps SO MUCH. I also know, that if I ever were to have even so much as 1 cigarette again, that I would start smoking again. Always remembering that helps me, because I have worked so hard for 3 years to stay smoke free- there is no way now that I am pissing that all down the drain for one cigarette.

I really believe things will get easier for you :) YOU CAN DO THIS!

Thank you for your inspirational comments.

I am opening up alittle more to select people about my decision to do the sleeve. I guess there really is no way to make anyone understand the struggle it has been to get to this point. For many people I think you're right , there is a stigma attached to this surgery. I think many people equate this journey as a quick fix , or even to serving some kind of vanity issues more than health issue.

I can understand where you are coming from with your daughter as well. My son as been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome 3 years ago. I have heard people say some mean things because they do not understand his behaviors and think he "looks normal"

thanks for the chat!!

Just had mine done on 10/14 and am recovering well. I can say I brought minimal stuff with me and I'm glad. The things I was really grateful for were Biotin mouth spray and Chapstick. Otherwise, the hospital gave me most of what I need, minus a couple toiletries. I worked really hard to get up and walk, and that really helped. The only regret I have from the experience is that I wish I would have shaved my arms--so much of that awful tape tearing out my arm hair!

Good luck everyone!!

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
