December 2015 or January 2016 sleevers ?

Recommended Posts

I just had the consult with the surgeon this week. Before scheduling the consult, I had to attend a educational seminar where they explained the different procedures. I have to do a 3 month supervised diet so hopefully December will be my timeline. The office was very sure to let me know if I don't lose during the 3 months, the insurance will deny the surgery. I hate having to act stupid about calories and carbs. Do you not realize I've been counting and dieting since I was 12? Clearly this hasn't worked otherwise I wouldn't be in your office.

I'm not telling anyone. I've yoyo dieted for years so I don't think anyone will question it and if they do will jut give the generic low carb/high Protein answer. Part of me doesn't want to tell anyone in case I fail at this too.

I read somewhere that they like you to lose about 10 lbs before surgery in order to shrink the liver but can't remember where I saw that.

My NUT said that today at my appt. Our liver lays partially in front of our stomach so the smaller it is the easier it'll be for them to reach our stomach. She put me on an 1800 cal diet and wants me to lose 11 lbs by January.

Oh wow... Can I ask what your height and weight is? I haven't had an in-depth conversation with my NUT yet, and am curious if I will be getting the same instructions. Not that I'd mind...it won't be easy. But then, none of this will...

I'm 5'4" and 226 lbs, I was a little shocked to hear only 11 lbs. She did say insurance usually requires you to lose 5-10% of your body weight so you can actually figure it up yourself but I wouldnt start dieting till AFTER your appt. I weighed 228 and started cutting back to jump start it and I weighed in 226 so they calculated off of that and losing weight for me is hard (hence why I'm here) so the 2 lbs I lost got tossed in the wind ????

@@gerbils8118 I didn't have to lose any weight, but since I have been on this supervise diet I have lost a total of 10Lbs, I am just afraid if I loose 2 much my bmi will drop to lower and my insurance will deny the surgery.

This is really a struggle , but with the support that I am receiving is making it a lot easier for me to stay focus. I keep pushing you will get through it.????

@@newstart38 I don't think the insurance will deny you if anything they do it ,so they can see that you can manage your weight and at the Same time shrink the size of the liver so that the surgeons can operate properly. Your doing great keep it up you will be fine. What kind of diet do they have you on? I finally see my doctor this Wednesday. And I'm trying to see what to expect on the first day

@@NewStart 38. I agree with kathy2208. Your insurance won't use this weight loss against you. I asked my surgeon and he said, "feel free to lose weight." Your weight loss is a really good pre-op step for success in surgery. My surgeon recommend either Weight Watchers, having only to do once a month weigh-ins without missing a month or starting over, or the Smartphone app Fitness Pal and visiting my PCP. I'm doing Weight Watchers.

@@kathy2208 for Breakfast and lunch my meals have to be 3 out of the 5 food groups and no carbs after lunch or for dinner. Ex I can have yogurt, eggs, and toast but it has to be whole wheat bread, and my snack has to be something healthy but I barely have a snack. Dinner I can only have meat and vegetables. . No sodas plenty of Water but I use the crystal light packets for the water. . Thank you for the encouragement.

@@gerbils8118 I am using my fitness pal app and I just picked up a fitbit. I synced both of tgem together. .

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
