NEWBIES..... LETS STICK TOGETHER

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody. I am a newbie. I'm planning on having my surgery in October but no exact date yet. I'm super excited that my three month appointment with the surgeon is coming up in a few weeks. Almost half way there. Anybody else for October ?

We're pretty much in the same boat. I'm hoping mine will be sometime in November as my last appointment is october 13.

Hi everyone!

I've been reading various threads on this site as well as other sites for the past two months. It's addictive (in a good way). I just want to make sure I'm well informed.

I'm a newbie & this is my first post . Excited, nervous & scared all rolled up in one. My biggest fear, believe it or not, is learning not to drink while I eat. I've been practicing...very hard.

My surgery should be in October. Going through all the pre-op requirements now.

I live in Nebeaska. I have three months to go before my surgery in October. The more of the pre op stuff they want me to do the more we are finding wrong. Nothing major just sleep apnia, high cholesteral. Ive stayed on a strick diet. No more than 1100 calories a day. Mo pop no carbs no sweets. Still have only lost 13 pounds in about 6 months. Soooo frusterating.. Help!!

Roll Tide! I'm about 3 hours to your southeast, but I went to UA and travel there frequently. I had surgery 6/21.

Hi, I am a newbie too. I don't have a surgery date, Hope to have it scheduled the last week of October or the first week in November. Let's see things I've done...

I went to a seminar

Initial consult (determined sleeve would be best)

I had an upper GI per my surgeons request (checking gall bladder before & after)

Received clearance from primary care doc

Received clearance from cardiologist

Saw the pulmonary specialist he's ordering a sleep study for me (no word yet)

Met with my fitness coach

Met with my nutritionist once, have 2 more visit

Just had my mental evaluation July 2

So....is this standard for everyone?

Looking for friends to walk beside me on this journey. I'm here for you.

Thanks.....oh and my name is Kelly

Hi Kelly, I'm Jan. I was required to do a 6 month diet and weigh- ins once a month. I'm a low bmi, so i was told to not lose weight. I've done initial consult and seminar and decided on the sleeve. I had to do psychiatrist and psychologist evaluations, upper gi, ultrasound, two blood tests, stress test, a chest xray, sleep study, nutritionist, found gallstones so I had to have the gallbladder removed. I remember when I went for my sleep study months ago, I was scheduled at 8pm and was worried about falling asleep so i took some pills to help with it in the parking lot while I waited for the technician to show up. No one showed up and I tried calling and waited for an hour and a half thinking maybe they messed up the time. The place is in Vegas in a not so nice area and there I was alone in the dark in my truck on sleeping pills lol. This last Thursday was my last weigh in and now 6 months later I am just waiting for the insurance to approve. The doctor said that it will be done in 2 weeks and the next available surgery date is August 1st. Long process and a lot of appointments! The end is near on this part of the process. I have a friend who had the sleeve with her husband in February and she is down nearly 60lbs now and her husband is over 100 lbs down. I'm excited for this and finding it difficult to wait all this time but it's almost over now. I'm getting a bit nervous I must admit, are you? I am 211lbs and hope to get to about 125lbs for goal. So 86lbs total! I would like to lose 6lbs between now and surgery date and that puts me at exactly 40bmi. Tell me more about you and where you're at in this journey. What do you have left to do?

I am in my last month of insurance required diet. My final appointment is on July 28th, and it can't get here soon enough. :D This has been a long hard journey to get insurance approval (been denied twice). I've switched hospitals, and feel a lot more confident with my current surgery coordinator. I'm in Birmingham, AL. Dr. Stahl is my surgeon @ UAB. My surgery will most likely be in September. I have PCOS and insulin resistance resistance, and finally getting the weight off will hopefully increase my chances of conceiving. I would love to hear from other sleevers.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
