Hi I'm a newbie! I see my dr on 7/17 to start 6 month diet. Then 7/22 is Bariatic seminar. I hope the 6 months going by quickly! I have united health care.

I just started my 6 months last month and know how quickly it will fly by. I am glad I will have surgery in the Winter.

Hi Flygirl, I'm praying they do approve me and hopefully it's a quick approval. I did the 3 mo with my primary but then I did do 3 months with the surgeon because he required it. My only concern is that I went in to do my one on one with my nutritionist yesterday and I gained 4 lbs in 2 weeks. That was my first gain since I started in January. I was bummed but I knew I did bad. I just hope this doesn't effect my approval process. I don't like that the nutritionist and my surgeon and primary all weigh u on different scales so your weight fluctuates.

Hey Crosby, boy do I hope your right. If I could've done the surgery yesterday I would've! Good luck to us all!

Soniaj that crazy they weigh you on differant scales! Hopefully the insurance co takes that into consideration. If we could lose weight long term & not have set backs we wouldn't need surgery!

Sonija, I'm also worried about the different scales. My surgeons scale is 6 pounds! different than the primary car doctor. That is a huge difference, then my scale is off 2 pounds with PCP. So I'm all over the scales on this ...

# 9 Grammy, I'm hoping that the insurance will take all of this into consideration, they have to realize that t he scaled would not match up. The difference for each place is 5 lbs. Which for me is a lot. I don't want the insurance to think every other week I either drop or gain. So frustrating ! UGH!

Glad to see what others are going thru and have experienced!

I am new here and I just completed my 3 month check-in for my 7 month medically supervised diet. My last appt is the first week of November so I am hoping to be sleeved by the end of the year. I have BCBS of Alabama. I have already meet with a dietician and had my psych eval.

I am a newbie too! I am planning on having surgery in late September or early October. Some days I feel like the 6 months of supervised weight loss are dragging by and some days I can't believe I'm already in my 5th month!

I realized about a week ago that I need to get everything else scheduled for the insurance approval so I feel so accomplished by having now scheduled all of my final appointments before everything gets submitted for insurance. My last supervised weight loss appointment should be September 2nd and everything else is scheduled to be completed 2 weeks before that so my coordinator has stated that she should be able to submit all of my paper work for insurance approval that day or the next day and then it is about a week of waiting for approval and then about 2 weeks for an open spot on the surgery calendar.

In the 6 months of supervised weight loss I have not lost that much (less than 10 pounds), so I am a little nervous about how insurance will view this. Will they view it as I've tried and failed AGAIN so they will approve me or because I haven't lost much on paper will they view it as I haven't tried at all and deny me? I have an insurance company called Viva Health and don't know many people with this that have had WLS, so the whole approval process is scary. My doctor's ofice deals with this insurance company all the time and assures me I am on the right track, so hopefully I will get approved!

I am currently trying to read and absorb all of the information I can about pre and post surgery nutrition so that I will be very sucessful long term!

Well It hasn't been much of a diet...LOL. The office said just don't gain any weight and if you could lose about 20 pounds it would really help prepare my body for surgery.

This is part of BCBS requirement for my surgery. But my husband works for GE Healthcare so the plan seems to be different than others. There are only 2 hospitals in the whole state of Texas they will approve the surgery at... amazingly they are right down the road.

I'm sorry I don't have much help to give. I am struggling myself.

Soniaj, I will have my 3 rd apt with PCP on July 16. Then 3 more months. I still have a cardio apt in Aug. I hope to be finished mid Sept then turn in all records and get approved! I don't know how Medicare is with surgery but my bariatric coordinator seems to be sure they will approve. I will see surgeon one last time too b 4 surgery I guess. So that's where I stand, oh and nobody knows but my fiancé , just haven't found a good time to tell my daughter. She may not like this, but it's my choice to get healthy!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
