Did your life change for the better or worse post VSG?

So we all harbor these fantasies about being happier, more confident, more social, sexier, stylish, successful, date more etc if we lost the weight. Well what happened after you lost the weight? Did things change for the better or worse?

Haven't been sleeve yet...but all the things you stated, run through my mind on a daily basis. .I lack all those things now due to my weight. I hope to feel better about myself after surgery.

For the better! All those things changed and more. I dont' ache like I used to.. Got my 1 year labs back and for the first time in about 20 years, I wasn't anemic. I do have more confidence. I'm not trying to hide under baggy clothing anymore. I dont' think I've changed exactly, just being a much better, healthier version of me. Good luck!!

1000 % for the better. I feel better in body, mind, and soul because I am getting healthy. Most importantly because I have hope now.

It is not all sunshine & unicorns, and it is not a magic bullet. But it has allowed me to get results from the work & commitment I put into it. I would do it again in a heart beat -- it was exactly what I needed.

I slipped in the snow the other night and had to have my daughter open the car door so could get up. I needed the leverage. I'm hoping that if it happens next year i'll be able to get up on my own. :)

F O R T H E B E T T E R!!!!!

Let me count the ways...

This has been the most successful I have been at any attempt to lose weight.

My blood pressure is lower.

I"m off Metformin for metabolic syndrome.

I sleep better at night.

I can exercise for 75 minutes straight.

I'm a happier person - I smile a lot.

I have more confidence.

I like myself more - I am kinder to myself.

I don't need to take a nap every day.

I'm not as cranky.

I am more social.

I feel more attractive to my husband.

I care what I look like - I wear makeup again.

Is it all sunshine and lollipops? NO! Not even close.

I can't eat the same foods that I used to. Some days I'd like a big cheeseburger and fries.

Some days I don't want to be a weight loss surgery patient - it is time consuming and occupies a lot of space in my brain.

Sometimes I don't have 20 minutes to eat an egg.

Some days I struggle to get in my 80 grams of Protein.

Would I do this all over again - absolutely. This was the best thing I could do for me and my family.

I think everything on your list came true with the exception of dating more. Happily married for almost 14 years. We are both enjoying the sleeved life together. How many couples can you say get to do that? :)

Fiddleman, Me and my adorable hubby were sleeved together after looking at 10 years of wls seminars for the sake of his health and morbid obesity. Thank God for the sleeve, and due to asthma, HBP, diabetes, I qualified for the surgery also, and decided it was do or die or I would lose my husband. Not joking. I decided I could be the leader. He was nervous. We could not be happier! God is good. We have been married 21 years and I want to squeeze in another 50 years with the most precious man on earth. Wishing you years of good health and happiness!

startingoveryetagain,

I'm not that far out but my life is definitely better. I can move without pain!!!!!!!!!!!!! That in itself is remarkable and makes me happier.

My relationship with food has totally changed. It is now only fuel. I have to concentrate on Protein first, chewing thoroughly, spacing liquids and food, taking Calcium then waiting 2 hours to take iorn, waiting two hours to take calcium and taking Multivitamins twice a day.

I have NO desire for sweets. My Protein shakes are all sweet. My calcium and iorn tablets are all sweet. I haven't got my appetite back yet and I can walk past the bakery in the grocery store and not even flinch.

IF you had told me I'd have no desire for sugar and fat filled baked goods---I'd NEVER have believed you. I guess my tastes have changed for the better. I now crave savory foods--not sweet.

I'm wearing sizes much smaller and they fit AND LOOK GOOD ON ME. My husband is thrilled because his wife just keeps looking hotter and hotter--never thought I'd be able to say that.

I am more confident and outgoing and total strangers seem to pick up on that.

I'd have the surgery again in a heartbeat.

Kathleen

Better for sure! No regrets at all!

I can't believe how quickly things have changed for me. I'm only 4 1/2 mos. out, and with my weight still being at 225 (sw 297) it floors me. My son and I have a better relationship. We play and cuddle a lot more. Same definitely goes with the husband (waay better romantic life as well!!) Im gaining more confidence already. I have already gotten rid of just about every piece of clothing I owned (Im too small!!) My life has changed for the better. My day to day aches and pains are becoming less and less by the day (it seems).

Ok, Im not thrilled about the hair loss, or the struggle to keep myself hydrated. But I signed on knowing these things, and would still have the surgery again today.

Sleeved October 2013. No regrets. Down 50 lbs. 50 more to go. I breathe easier, sleep better, feel better overall. Simple things like taking the stairs at work are accomplishments. Before the weight loss I would have to stop half way to coach my breath and lean against the wall. Very impt. To follow Nut and surgeon's instructions. Have to admit exercising more would have put me at a higher weight loss by now, so that is what I will concentrate on. The sleeve for me is live changing, but also life saving.

You say it best..you get results from the work and commitment put into it...before the sleeve trying to lose was a very frustrating process, but if you follow your dr. And Nut program , you definitely enjoy success in your weight loss efforts!

I would say YES to all of the statements in the original post! Lol. I just posted my 6 month post op update on my blog (linked in my signature) and I talked about just that....all the wonderful ways my life has changed. And an added bonus is that I keep being told I look 10 years younger :-)

The Pros -

1. I love my new body and the confidence it gives me.

2. It feels so good to be able to fit into (most) medium sized shirts (compared to XXL and some XXXL's) and a loose sz 14 jeans (compared to a tight 18, a snug 20 and a comfortable 22)

3. I lowered my cholesterol and blood pressure!

4. I haven't been back for a sleep study, but my sleep apnea seems to have dissipated. I'm no longer groggy in the morning and husband says I stopped snoring.

5. I've stopped hiding from cameras and floor length mirrors because the image doesn't make me sad anymore

6. My watches and bracelets aren't so tight they leave marks on my arms anymore.

7. I no longer feel self conscious because I know I'm the heaviest or one of the heaviest women in the room

8. I have a glow about me

I NEVER EVER though I would ever lose weight (I believed I would be that .1% the surgery didn't work for) but seeing myself be disciplined enough to do the Clear liquids pre-opt diet, follow each stage of my post-opt diet, then lose nearly 60lbs between October 2013 - March 2014 has inspired me to take control of other areas in my life such as:

1. Grad School: After 7 years of putting it off, I finally enrolled in graduate school and begin next month.

2. Therapy: I started going to therapy to get to the root of why I was eating so much. It's only been two months, but I am happier, more upbeat, less tired and my patience level is improving.

3.Clothes: I've started dressing better (not necessarily sexier, but instead of throwing on jeans and a t-shirt, I take my time to color coordinate and wear more stylish clothing).

4. Better hair style: I also have started doing my hair differently (when I was heavier, I wore my hair bone straight to try and make my face look smaller. Now, 60lbs down, I'm able to wear my hair in it's natural curly state because my face has thinned out and is more oval)

The Cons:

1. Every once in awhile I miss stuffing myself with food. I didn't know I was suffering from depression at the time, so food gave me comfort. It made me feel loved, safe, satisfied, etc.

2. Sometimes I resent my husband (I think it's a little twinge of jealously) when I see him piling his plate high with food and I've got a little, teeny, tiny dessert plate of food that I'm only able to eat half of

3. My surgeon said I need to wait 18 - 24 months to get pregnant (I turn 30 in a few months and would like to have had a baby sooner)

4. Sometimes I feel guilty, especially when I see other friends, family and coworkers struggling with their weight. Like the other day at Macy's my mom was complaining about her weight and how some of the clothes she liked didn't fit. I used to be able to commiserate with her.
