December 2013 Sleevers Come In!

Recommended Posts

I know this is totally off topic but I have to vent. I'm not very close with my dad, he lives in Chicago and I live in Manitoba Canada. He's coming for a visit this evening and staying at my house for a week. (Never buy a house with extra guest bedrooms!!!!)

...

Does anyone else have difficulty telling family members about their sleeve??

Hate to say it, but my standby is, "I'd rather be fat than unkind to people I love, but I'm trying to change... maybe you should try changing too?" And if he's still crappy about it (or anything), you need to ask him what kind of future relationship he wants to have with you, because the path he's treading is neither useful nor loving.

Hope the weekend goes well, and hugs.

I wouldnt tell him. Its not unheard if to lose 30 pounds. If necessary I would say something like "it's amazing what you can do when you surround yourself with a positive support system who all want to help me become healthier!".

My mom promised me she would come over to help me talk to my dad about the gastric sleeve as he has no idea. I was sleeved on December 9th and down 36lbs, so at this point it's fairly obvious. My dad is not a sensitive man, he's called me fat my whole life and laughed when others have called me fat. I'm really nervous to even eat in front of him and now I have to go through telling him about my surgery.

My parents have been divorced for 14 years but they're still friends and see and talk to each other often. When my dad is mean to me my mom will stick up for me (sometimes). I talked to her this morning and she said she'd be over by 3. Well it's now 4, my dad should be here any minute and she's not here. Not answering her phone and I've texted her several times.

I know I'm 30 and should just suck it up and put my big girl pants on (that are getting smaller these days!!) but it's really hard facing my dad alone. Worse yet, my sister who is fairly supportive of me is out of town. So it is literally just me, that's a lie... I have my wonderful husband and three amazing children who love me for me. :o)

Does anyone else have difficulty telling family members about their sleeve??

Fostermama, you were just given the gift of a brand new life, be grateful and use it wisely. The universe (or higher power) will handle your father as he deserves in due course. Don't get yourself tangled in the past, keep your eye on the amazing future ahead. Stay strong and don't let the anxiety of his visit bring you down, or emotionally eat. Be the better person, treat him well, and don't let anything he says bring you down. And yes, tell him it was diet and exercise, which is not untrue. Good luck, we are here for you!

Thanks for the great advice guys!! I decided not to say anything and I'm glad! He didn't comment and I didn't offer. My mom ended up coming over which is awesome. He did eye my plate and portion of food but didn't say anything.

I am definitely getting stronger. I was always scared to talk in groups of people and finding it easier to converse with my son's hockey team parents and my daughter's dance parents as well. Also I'm in University and answered my first question in a class of 75 last week. Feels good to be confident! :)

Thanks everyone for the support. I can't believe I didn't think of not telling him, like that was even an option! Ha! :)

Going back to work tomorrow and feeling a little nervous about having enough energy - but mainly nervous about the questions from coworkers. I haven't told them why I was having surgery (though they know that I did have it). A couple of people asked what my surgery was for and I told them I didn't really want to discuss it.

People will probably notice the weight loss and comment. I plan to just smile and say thanks.

Maybe just tell them you had girl issues and while recuperating, you lost some weight and it has motivated you to continue!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
