Update on hair loss I was at work the other day and seen my surgeon. I told him I was concerned about hair loss from surgery. He stated I need to take 50 mg of zinc a day and that would help. I asked about the biotin he said that is ok but do the zinc. Just thought you guys might want to know. Next step is to have all my fluid removed from my band still can't believe my surgery is less than a month away.

People lose hair approximately 1-3 months after a stressful event, such as child birth or surgery, it's called Telogen effluvium. I have read that you can have non-stress related Telogen effluvium caused by zinc deficiency. I'll be curious if the zinc supplementation before surgery helps, however, I have concerns with your surgeon recommending 50 mg a day (read below). Always keep in mind that while your surgeon is smart, talented, and educated, he or she is ultimately a cutter and not always well versed in supplements, vitamins, and nutrition...that is why you have a NUT, preferably a RD.

I recently read a great article that talks about this. Here are some highlights:

"Iron is the single nutrient most highly correlated with hair loss. Optimal iron levels for hair health have not been established, although there is some evidence that a ferritin level below 40 gm/dl is associated with hair loss in women.....

Biotin is often recommended to help prevent hair loss or improve hair re-growth. There are no scientific articles to support or refute these assumptions. Anecdotal reports suggest biotin makes a difference in hair loss and re-growth. As biotin is a water-soluble vitamin, the risk of toxicity is low and supplementation is not harmful. The recommended upper safe limit for biotin is approximately 2000 to 3000 mcg (micrograms) per day.....

Zinc deficiency has been associated with hair loss, although further study is needed to definitively claim that zinc could prevent hair loss after bariatric surgery. The tolerable upper limit for zinc is set at 40 mg in adults. Levels above this can cause gastrointestinal distress, and toxicity can start at levels of 60 mg per day. A lab test to check for zinc deficiency would be prudent before taking any additional zinc."

WOW, I'm scheduled for October 3. My doc is not requiring me to do 10 day liquid diet!!! Stoked! He said I was on the fence with my BMI and I could do the surgery or not.......I am post lapband removal and have done so much research on all surgeries.... I just blurted out SCHEDULE ME :} My husband laughed at me and said that I did not even ponder on making the decision. I told him I was tired of not seeing results of our workout and eating right....I wanted payoff!! No more people thinking I'm pregnant. I carry a lot of my weight in the middle..No more obesity, cause my whole family line is obese. I don't want that. He is so proud. That makes me feel good.

Great! Which route did you take? 3 or6 months? I'm shooting for 3. We'll be submitting the first week of October. I hear Aetna is good about approving.

I had 3 months of nutrition to complete. I finished that in april.. I just had to wait for the time off from work to coordinate with my bf so he could help me the first few days home.

Hey everyone! I am hoping to be scheduled for an October surgery! I just finished all of the clearences my dr and insurance require. It should be going to the insurance today. My surgeons office says it will only take 1-2 weeks to approve. My biggest thing was getting doctors to submit my paperwork after I saw them to be cleared. At 3 pm yesterday I was still waiting on 3 letters. I went to my gyno about bc and she really upset me by lecturing me about my weight. I called all of the drs I had been waiting on and since I was so upset they sent them all over :-). I can't wait to get this done! I'm more excited for mg husband And my son than myself. I've always had this feeling that I'm not good enough for my hubby because of my weight. He is less than 200 pounds and very fit. He says its nuts and if h felt that way he wouldn't be here but it's still always in the back of my mind. I see all of his friends and their super hot wives and just feel bad for him. I can't wait for that to change!!
