Hello everyone!! Figured I would hop onto this thread. I had my rny on 5/14/13. I'm down a total of 105 lbs weighing in at 168! I'm actually a size 12 (loose) from a size 22 . I can't believe it. Life is so great. My hubby picked me up last Sunday twice and I wrapped my legs completely around him. Good luck everyone on your journey. I have faith in you all.

I want to wish the best of everything to each and every one of you! I won't say luck because there is no luck involved. It is hard work and you are each wonderful. I had gastric bypass surgery on July 31, 2007 and weighed 270 pounds. I was 57 years old, had chronic anemia (so the surgeon almost didn't do the surgery) and a 95% calcified gall bladder. So, it had to go at the same time. In 10 months, I lost 130 pounds, I never had the first complication and have had great labs ever since.

I have however gained some weight since quitting smoking in December of 2012 (35 pounds). That is why I am here, to lose that weight gain and get back to goal. I have no doubt that I can do that with the support of the good folks here. Happy New Year everyone!

Hello all!

Almost a month out and down 40 lbs. my starting weight was 300 and my goal weight is 150. My current weight is 260! I have been having a pretty rough time adjusting but It does me good to see how well everyone is doing! I am honestly so hopeful things will get better! 110 pounds seems so far away. But I am hopeful that I can do it! Seeing you all... And how well you're doing... Well it helps me see the light at the end of the tunnel!

I also have to lose over 100# I'm 272 and have a surgery date for RNY Feb 4. I would love to weigh 140 and at 5'5" that is a high normal. I know it will be a long year but I am so ready. It took 7 months to complete all the requirements and get a date. It's great seeing others with my BMI.

Has any one watched "Fat Doctor" on Youtube. It's a UK reality show about a surgeon and the patients having WLS. You actually see the surgery. It is well worth watching.

Hi! Thought I would also jump in. I had my RNY on June 25, 2013. I weighed about 291 pounds on my surgery day, I had lost nearly 40 pounds prior to surgery. I just hit my 9 month anniversary and am down just over 175 pounds total. I am reaching the goal I had made for myself before surgery. Now I am thinking I may go for another 20 - 25 pounds. Make my total loss about 200 pounds. This would put my BMI in the normal range.

I will tell you that this doesn't happen by itself. I work out every day. I have a Fit Bit that lets me know how effective my workouts have been each day. I have had some small cheats, but really stick to my plan every day. I am here to say that THIS CAN BE DONE!!

Good luck to all of you on this journey. I would not be here without the wisdom of the folks on this site. I will also say that how I feel today makes all the hard work to get here SO worth it!

Carol

Baconville,

So glad to read your story. You started out at a weight about like mine. Congratulations on your success!

I had RNY 10/15/13 and have lost 102 lbs since 10/1/13 when I began my 2 week liquid diet prior to surgery. I need to lose about 80 more pounds to reach my goal of 160 lbs. I am 5'8" so that is a healthy goal.

Losing weight was easy until about 2/1/14. I am having carb cravings and I'm trying to see just how many carbs I can eat per day and not gain--AND continue to lose. Well, I haven't gained, but my weight loss has slowed. I am exercising and doing strength building.

Do you have carb cravings or are you one of the lucky ones who escaped this? What did you eat 6 months out from surgery? What kind and amount of food? How calories per day and how many grams Protein, carbs, fat?

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
